Default Similarities in Stings 97 world title run and Benoits 04 run...

This just hit me how similar there title runs were.

Lets start with the buildup:

Stings is a story we all know. For a year he hung in the rafters ready to take out Hogan...the question is when??? Well he decided at WCWs wrestlemania(starrcade) he would do it. He won the match(finish was bogus but whatever)

Benoits title run was built up for awhile but heavily pushed after he won the royal rumble. The story was he could never win the big one but he was the hardest worker wwe had. Kind of a franchise player type...good and loyal(ala sting). He wins the belt at Mania againt HHH, who was alot like Hogan...leader of his own group, practically running raw like nwo running nitro.

Alright so after they both win the rematches its time for them to move on from there Hogan and HHH's right?

Well Stings first feud is againt Scott Hall. THe problem? Its completley overshadowed by Hogan/Savage and doesnt even main event.

Benoit feuds with Kane. Great choice...the problem? It was overshadowed by HHH and...HBK(two buddies..kind of like Hogan/Savage)

Then its time for both guys to drop there belts even though there supposed to have long epic runs with the belt.

Sting drops the belt to...Savage who then loses it to Hogan Im pretty sure the next night.

Benoit drops it to Orton...who drops it to HHH a month later.

These guys were built up so well to be the next big champion for each company and in a Fuckin Flash there main star status is gone...

Thoughts?

Never noticed this but the connections you made are interesting. Would have been interesting if Sting gave DPP or Goldberg their first World title win (ala Benoit/Orton) and WCW ran with it. But Hogan was the top heel so I guess it's alright to put it on him to ultimately drop it to Goldberg like HHH ultimately dropped it to Batista.

Similarities, sure. I have one big difference though. Sting's year long build up was actually awesome to watch. Benoit, not so much.

Sting's year long build up was flushed through the toilet so quick. that hogan fucker definitely is the main cause of that. As for Benoit yes he didnt have the luck either to work with such an ego like triple h. However he must have been glad he did even a chance to win the gold at the time since triple h was so desperate to be the champion back then.

to be fair simmilarities can be found all over the place in wrestling, it's just how things are. It's not like this was planned out or something. Like the writers sat there at teh end of 03 and said, okay we are running out of ideas to push Benoit, let's use Sting in 97 as a guidline.

not what Im getting at all. Im trying to say its ironic both guys were overshadowed by the biggest politick of there era(HHH,Hogan) and eventually those two men got the belt back around them...

To be honest, I think Benoit had a pretty good WHC run. He held the title from the biggest PPV of the year until the second biggest, a nice 5 month run where he played the role of the underdog fighting face champion that only someone with his talent can be convincing at playing.

And to whoever that said Benoit had bad luck working with HHH, I gotta disagree. HHH put him over clean at Mania by submitting, then he and HBK lost to him in his hometown at Backlash. HHH continued to put him over at Vengeance and a great Ironman match on Raw in July, although that Eugene non-sense became a part of it for no good reason. And HHH is one of the few people who's extremely open about his respect for Benoit as a man and wrestler to this day, can't wait until he takes over and tones down the ban.

As for the comparisons to that Sting run, it's pretty interesting to say the least. I wish Benoit would have gotten more chances with the World Title, though.
