Default Wrestlemania 2's main event: What if...

Phil5991's thread on Wrestlemania VII reminded me of something I read once.

That after Nikita Koloff's first main event in the NWA Vince tried to get him to come to WWF. He told him his push would culminate in ether a feud with then IC champ Tito Santana or a Wrestlemania 2 main event of Hulk Hogan Vs. Nikita Koloff. How much better would that have been than Hulk in a cage with King Kong Bundy.

Nikita seconded by Uncle Ivan, the Former WWWF Champion, goes after Hulk and the WWF championship. In the mid 80s USA Vs. Soviet Union. Nikita was a monster back then.

Imagine it follows a similar story to Hulk/Bundy. Nikita and Ivan want to take the WWF championship back to the Soviet Union and Nikita wants to return it the Koloff family.

Nikita comes and just destroys Hogan. Injures him badly with multiple Russian Sickles. Hulk, the injured underdog patriot, goes into a steel cage with the Russian Nightmare. The heat for that would have been off the charts.

Too bad Nikita turned it down.

Nikita Koloff said he turned down Vince McMahon first time round because he was working with Ric Flair at the time which made him look great and he believed he could get a better deal if he was offered another chance later on. When he was offered the next chance in WWE he said he wasn't offered the same opportunities despite being offered more money so he turned them down again and continued his feud with The Four Horsemen and that was it as far as him and WWE were concerned.

I get Nikita's thought process at the time, but in retrospect him main eventing against Hogan at WM would have raised his stock immensely. As for the second offer I wonder if that was because Vince felt the moment had already passed or that Nikita was by then so identified with the NWA that Vince didn't want to put him on the same level as WWF Main Eventers.

Koloff vs Hogan most likely would have been a better match than Hogan vs Bundy at WM 2. Intriguing concept.

I remember reading somewhere that Hogan turned down the idea of Savage - Hogan at Mania 2. That would have trumped everything.

I think that Hogan vs Nikita would have been such a great feud back in the mid 80's, Nikita was pretty damn good and I think that it would have brought out the best of Hogan. In the 80's he was always fed monster type wrestlers and there is only so much he could do, throw in Nikita a guy with speed and energy it could have been very good.
