If you were in Vince's shoes, how would you have avoided the Montreal screwjob?

1.Told Shawn he must lose to Bret or face disciplinary action?
2.Have the match end in DQ as originally planned
3.Cancel the match. Declare the title vacant instead.
4.Have Bret lose the title to another wrestler on the PPV then have him switch the title to Shawn either at the same PPV or on RAW

1. Would have made no sense since Vince wanted Bret to loose the title, due to the WCW situation.
2. No, due to the WCW situation.
3. To let WCW announce Bret as the WWF Champion? Hell no.
4. Most likely but still bad for business, since Shawn vs Bret was the biggest storyline around that time and was already announced.

I am a huge Bret mark, but if I were in Vince's shoes I would have done the exact same thing, for the business.
It is really unfortunate for Bret and from a personal point of view unbearable but from a business standpoint (vinces view) it makes sense the way it happened.

Before the match, show a backstage segment where both guys tell there respected groups to stay back because they wanted to end this on there own.

During the match someone comes out to interfere for HBK(Outlaws maybe or hhh) and Owen comes out. Tries hitting HHH with the chair but hhh ducks and it hits HBK. Bret doesnt realize and covers HBK for the one two three. Also forgot to add, make a ref bump and Shawn Michaels superkicks Bret and actually has him pinned but no ref.

Next night, Bret realizes what happens. Says he told himself the night before the match if he could not beat HBK fair and square in Canada he would retire from the wwf. Hands the belt to Shawn, raises his hand and walks out.

Was there any way Vince could have made Bret sign a contract that would prohibit Bret from appearing on any non WWF program until after he gave up the WWF title? And he wasn't allowed to take it with him either.

That was really the only reason he screwed bret, cause of fear that Bret would just leave with the title.

I've always wondered if fans would be happier, or madder if they just cancelled the match instead of going through with the screwjob.

Vince handled everything just perfect. Bret had this coming, and brought it on himself because of his refusal to job. Did he honestly think Vince was just going to let him walk out without jobbing on the way out? Bret knew well ahead of time that jobbing on the way out is a time honored tradition. Its just how its done in the vast majority of cases. Vince would have been cutting his own throat to let Bret go to WCW as champ. He had already been burned by Alundra Blayze/Madusa Micelli. He could not afford to let that happen with the WWF World title.

To be honest, once Bret refused to job to HBK, I would've went along with the screwjob. Bret should've just dropped the damn title to HBK and went on his way.

The exact same thing Vinnie Mac did

Well it depends on when he actually signed the WCW deal. I personally wouldn't have screwed Bret, I would have tried to fine some way around it.
My belief is that, if Vince knew Bret was leaving why did he even give Bret the title? That made no sense. Once it was decided that he was leaving he shouldn't have gotten the title or have dropped the title on TV/PPV. He could have put over Shamrock (or someone else) in his last match at Survivor Series.

But if I were in the very same situation, I probably would have made it a triple threat match and had the third party win just to transition it to HBK. They did it with Foley/Austin/HHH and RVD/Edge/Cena.

Because Bret's problem was losing to HBK, so take that off the table and have him lose to someone else. Simple...crisis averted. With all the goodwill Bret had gained during his tenure he deserved at least some leeway on the matter.

I would have tried to keep Bret in the E. He was a draw no doubt. But never the screwjob I would have let Bret retain at SS and drop it to ken shamrock next raw.

There's nothing else Vince could have done. Bret Hart refused to do his job, and he got what he deserved.
