This.
Despite Shawn refusing to job to Bret at WM13 Bret agreed to job to him and at that very moment he said it point blank he would never do the same for him.Shawn was a Power intoxicating ASS-HOLE, a bully! .I side with Bret on this.
Imo they should have made Bret job to Austin and Bret was recommending them this himself as Austin was red hot popular than and he had never defeated Bret before so Austin finally defeating Hart would have been huge.

By trusting my most loyal employee ever to do the right thing, play out the DQ finish as planned and let Bret give up the title the next night. And people trying to justify it by saying it made the Mr. McMahon character legit? Fuck that. Mr. McMahon didn't screw Bret, the real Vince McMahon did, plus Vince would have done just fine against Austin over the next two years without screwing Bret. He got paranoid, made a bad choice. End of story.

If I were in Vince's shoes? I'd have realized that one of the participants in this match is an insecure, power-hungry, arrogant, manipulative drug addict in need of serious help (Shawn), while the other is simply looking for a viable way out of a situation getting quickly out of control (Bret). I'd quit stirring shit up between them and feeding heat to the locker room. I'd do everything in my power to keep Bret due to his loyalty and amazing work ethic for the last 13 years.
Basically, I'd open my fucking eyes to what the problems were between them and work it out like men.

I think it was a calculated move on Vince's behalf. He knew him versus Austin was the future of the company so what better way to get over as a heel.
I don't know if it was a shoot or not, but I think the end result was exactly what Vince wanted. He either played Bret for a sucker or Bret was in it all along.

Agreed, the screwjob really set Vince as a monster heel as the perfect foil for Steve rebellious nature
