As this incident changed wrestling forever and Bret was pretty committed to going to WCW I would have kept things the way they happened.

Smacked Shawn Michaels a few times in the head for being such an asshole. I don't blame Bret Hart for refusing, after Shawn refused first.

Anything other than 'screwing' Hart. Hell, after all of his hard work and dedication, that's pretty fucking lousy to destroy his dignity.

That has got to be Kane.

Re: If you were in Vince's shoes, how would you have avoided the Montreal screwjob?

Made shawn vs bret into a match where the title can change hands on a dq then have someone go down and get bret disqualified

That way if bret doesn't lay down then someone can just go down and smack bret, bret loses the title

The way they did it was just unprofessional.

Exactly. Besides knowing what we know now, why would he want to? The screwjob led to Vince's heel turn which fostered Austin/McMahon one of the greatest feuds of all time and led to WWE overtaking WCW.

I guess he could've had Bret just drop the title to Austin, but that would've fucked up Austin/Tyson leading up to WM14 another huge factor in WWE returning to the top. Who else was an option? Undertaker I guess. I know Bret said he'd drop the title to Shamrock, but Shamrock wasn't ready at the time.

The only other option would be dropping it to another wrestler. Austin was also injured at the time and barely working so I don't think that would've really worked. Undertaker is the only viable candidate I can come up with and having him drop to HBK at the Rumble or the December PPV, but I'm pretty sure it would've been a bad idea to cancel the advertised HBK/Bret rematch 18 months in the making and piss off your fans by not giving them the match they paid for. Which could've done damage to the company on it's own. While screwing Bret did exactly the opposite.

I still don't understand the "Bret deserved it" stuff. It was okay for Shawn to do the same thing, but not Bret? Okay...

Re: If you were in Vince's shoes, how would you have avoided the Montreal screwjob?

First of all, I wouldn't have let Bret Hart go at all. Regardless of what their financial situation at the time, their claim that they couldn't afford to keep Bret on made no sense to me as he was a valuable assett to the company who would've taken a pay cut to stay with the WWF. I would've kept him him on board in a part time capacity - wrestling big events and special occassions, while using his knowledge and understanding of the business to help write the angles and book the matches at other times.

maybe drop the belt to Owen the next night on Raw you can't tell me by late 97 that owen was not ready for at least a month or two month title run then he could of drop the belt to Shawn at the rumble also keep in mind that Shawn would have never hurt his back if he would of never faced taker at the rumble but there is also a few other guys that Bret could of drop the belt to the next night on raw mankind vader bulldog shamrock hell maybe even kane
