Well... it's been a slow day today, so I decided to watch "The Rise and Fall of WCW" again. When they got to the part of Bischoff coming into the company and the start of Monday Nitro. It got me thinking of which company was overall better in that year. My thoughts are as followed:
1995: WCW Nitro
1996: WCW Nitro
1997: WWF Raw
1998: WCW Nitro
1999: WWF Raw
2000: WWF Raw
2001: WWF Raw
What about you? What was your preference from 1995-2001?
up to 1997 it was pro-Nitro , 1998 was a split between the two (and why IMO it was the best wrestling year ever) , and from that point it was pro-RAW
the difference is that in 1996 and 1997 WWF had a good product (emphasis on 1997 when the action all began) but Nitro was on fire those years especially with the NWO vs Sting feud .. however WCW was shit from 1999 onwards while WWF was living it's best years
^that badass roster^
"Every single thing you're doing right now in the wwe john , going to every show , The Rock has already done it . Every single thing you're thinking about doing , outside of the wwe , The Rock has already done it , as a matter of fact The Rock has done it better !"
1995: WWF Raw - neither show was much to behold, but WWF was more entertaining
1996: WCW Nitro - introduction of the nWo changed the course of wrestling
1997: Dead tie - WWF transitioned into the Attitude Era, but the nWo/Sting angle was also fantastic
1998-2001: WWF Raw - Raw was great, Nitro was garbage. That simple.
I'm thinking along the lines of this. In 95, Raw was the established show and WCW was still getting used to the prime time slot and trying things out. 96 had the nWo explode and lead in to WCW becoming the hottest company.
97 I think WCW was better, simply because WWF was in the middle of a transitioning to the Attitude Era which would explode in 98, while WCW already had the ball rolling and were building toward Hogan/Sting at Starrcade. They screwed it up, Austin got white-hot, and WWF made the right call in 98 putting the strap on him. Then the Attitude Era was in full swing, but I still thought WCW was dead even with them for at least the first half of the year.
99-01 is when all the bad happened. The Fed got better, WCW got worse.
'97 - Nitro just for the epic Sting/nWo feud. They really messed up at Starrcade though with the horribly overbooked finish and no blowoff to the feud. I can understand why they did the finish because the MSJ was so hot at the time but it's illogical. Other feuds I liked were the Outsiders/Steiner brothers, the awesome undercard matches with guys like Eddie/Rey/Malenko/Jericho/Syxx, Savage/DDP was another good feud, enjoyed Flair/Hennig and Rodman's presence on the show was epic. OH YEAH AND SCOTT HALL WON WORLD WAR III.
RAW was starting to becoming edge into the summer. I didn't like DX but I thought HBK/Taker feud was interesting and Kane's build up was awesome. Austin was really bad ass over the second half of the year and had a nice, mini feud with Rock at the end of the year.
'98 - RAW. It kicked off with a great Austin/Tyson/HBK storyline that probably helped shift the tide in ratings. The entire Austin/Vince feud was perfectly booked and very entertaining. Rock was EPIC especially after he became the leader of the Nation and was hugely over as a heel getting ROCKY SUCKS chants at every arena. His tow month tweener run was great and he really came into his own as the Corporate Champ. New Age Outlaws were awesome and only thing I liked about DX. Kane/Taker feud was great since it was fresh at the time though their matches were usually terrible. Mankind's character development was great as well.
Nitro only had a few interesting storylines this year. Goldberg's build up and title run was epic, nWo Wolfpac was awesome and the Flair/Bischoff along with the reformation of the Horsemen was really good. Booker T/Benoit had a really good best of 7 series of matches and Scott Steiner's charactar development was good as well. Everything else seemed rehashed and stale. Bringing in Karl Malone, Rodman and Leno gave them mainstream exposure but was pretty lame overall. It was funny watching Hogan oversell their offense though. I didn't like Bret Hart in WCW and they never seemed to have a clear direction for him.
'99 - RAW. RAW takes the lead for good and becomes a much better show. There wasn't any need to tune into WCW from this point.
'00 - RAW. Not even close. Probably my favorite wrestling year along with '98.
95/early 98 - WCW Nitro, at least too me they could do nothing wrong. Nitro was the more exciting show. IT had NWO, Crusierweights, DDP's Push, crow sting, and even early Goldberg. Compared to WWF/E countering with their forced Boyhood dream nonsense and even corny stuff like "Pillman Got's a Gun" WWF/E offering just wasn't a good counter to what WCW was presenting at the time.
Mar 98/01 - WWE RAW was he better show. I think their run kicked off with the Road to Mania XIV HBK VS Ausin and Tyson as the enforcer changed the tide of the war. Not to mention the RAW after Mania, Austin v McMahon, and even the debut of Y2J,TAZ,Radicals, and the Dudleys Killed WCW. Not to mention WCW couldn't build anyone in its last days.
*I remember there being a period of time where ECW on TNN was more exciting then both Nitro and RAW
