When did the WWF/E World Title surpass the NWA/WCW World Title in prestige?

I been watching a lot of documentaries, most of which created by the WWE and the recurring theme is that the NWA World Heavyweight Championship was THEE World title (...it even has its own WWE produced documentary).

But its pretty obvious that over the years the WWF/E World Heavyweight Championship has risen to further heights than the NWA title. Considering also that the WCW World Championship is linked to the NWA title did that mean that WCW's World Championship mean more than the WWF's? (This would be the late 80s-early 90s)

So when did this happen that the WWF/E World Heavyweight Championship became to be more prestigious than the NWA/WCW World Heavyweight Championship, or is it not more prestigious?

You can argue which title you thought was more prestigious in the 80s when Flair and Hogan dominated but once the NWA separated from WCW in the early 90s it never had the recognition it had in the 60s, 70s, and 80s. So my answer is the early 90s for the NWA title.

Now the WCW Championship gained the recognition in the mainstream once NWA cut its ties with the company. However, when they put the belt on an actor that was just one of the lowest circumstances for a World Title ever in mainstream wrestling. So 2000s for the WCW title.

Re: When did the WWF/E World Title surpass the NWA/WCW World Title in prestige?

When I was growing up being the WWF Champion was being THEE champion to me. I didn't really consider the NWA Champion the world champion. When it came to WCW I didn't take that title seriously until Ric Flair returned from the Fed and won it back.

I think after learning more about the history of the titles the NWA strap took a huge hit when Flair left and didn't lose the belt on the way out. So when Flair won the WWF Championship in a way he was still World Champion even though he wasn't recognized and it put the WWF title on the same wavelength because Flair hadn't lost the NWA title.

So it seems like Flair was the conduit for transferring the prestige of the NWA to WWF. Once that happened I can't really see how WCW ever had a more prestigious championship than the Fed.

When it comes to lineage I think the WCW title benefitted from the lengthy NWA affiliation so it wasn't damaged that much when Flair left because it still had 50+ years of relevance.

Re: When did the WWF/E World Title surpass the NWA/WCW World Title in prestige?

I always viewed the NWA Title as the true world title, considering Flair in the 80's and 90's defended it any and everywhere. Back in the 80's, Flair would defend it in various territories and in the 90's would often defend it in Japan. Also, the NWA title centered more around actual wrestling.

But honestly, I think the WCW Title really lost prestige after "The Fingerpoke of Doom". Seems like a spit in the face of all the greats that held the big gold belt.

I always felt the WWF Title was more prestigious, even when WCW had surpassed them. The NWA/WCW Title had been around much longer but the WWF Title had been worn by bigger names in bigger venues on bigger stages.

So, I suppose Flair, Giant Baba, Dusty Rhodes in the south, Kerry Von Erich in Texas, Tatsumi Fujinami, Masa Chono, Great Muta, Lex Luger & Goldberg aren't big names in the wrestling business and globally.

I suppose that Texas Stadium, the Greensboro Coliseum, which has tons of wrestling history, Tokyo Dome, the Georgia Dome, the Super Dome and the Cow Palace aren't big wrestling videos.

Majority of the previously mentioned buildings are far bigger and have had higher attendance then most of the WWE's big, non dome arenas.

I understand that we agree to disagree but most of the guys who held the WCW/NWA Title are HUGE around the world and the main areas the belt was defended in where the hot beds of professional wrestling for decades. But once Hogan and the ex WWF guys came, it kind of lost it's prestige.

1948 - 1983 - NWA Title was the top title in the US.

1984 - 1995 - WWF Title was the top.

1996 - 1998 - WCW Title was the top.

1999 - present - WWF/E.

Note - Had Verne Gagne been less of a fool, and put his strap on Hogan, the AWA title would have been tops in the 80s.

Re: When did the WWF/E World Title surpass the NWA/WCW World Title in prestige?

I grew up as a fan of NWA/WCW and Sting was the first wrestler i ever marked for back in the very late 80's so for me as a very young kid that was THE main World title although i was aware of the WWE title as i was bought WWE videos as well. If i look at it all properly now though i'd say the WWE title probably became THE title sometime around 1985 or 1986 when WWE was becoming HUGE due to the Rock And Wrestling Era which saw people like Cyndi Lauper become involved in storylines.

By the time 1987 had come along and the build up to Hogan/Andre had began there was effectively no comparison because WWE had become a global powerhouse and WWE had crossed over into mainstream in a HUGE way and Hulk Hogan and Andre The Giant had become celebrities rather than wrestlers. I would say though i believe in 1989 because WWE had become a bit stagnant the NWA title had overtaken the WWE title again and Ric Flair had arguably the greatest year any single wrestler has ever had with feuds and matches with Terry Funk and Ricky Steamboat being the highlights.

Neither WWE or NWA/WCW had great years in 1990 but once Ric Flair took the NWA title to WWE that was the end of the NWA/WCW title being on the same level as the WWE title in my eyes and as hard as Sting, Ric Flair once he returned and Vader all tried the NWA/WCW title never had the same prestige. It was even further devalued once Hulk Hogan beat Ric Flair at Bash At The Beach in 1994 because Hulk Hogan then struck a deal with WCW to bring all his friends in and rather than make the WCW title look great in feuds with Sting, Ric Flair and Randy Savage he fought his friends like Brutus Beefcake, John Tenta, The Big Show, Kamala and Haku/Meng which did nothing for the title and it wasn't until the build up to Sting/Hogan at Starrcade that the title mattered again.
