Is Bob Backlund overrated/an overachiever?

I recently watched a video of WWE roundtable where they said that Backlund was an overachiever because he didn't have the look and wasn't charismatic. I then looked up a discussion from another board discussing if Backlund was a draw. So, I want to know what you think. What's your opinion on Backlund?

Re: Is Bob Backlund overrated/an overachiever?

I think he was ahead of his time. He just might have been a draw in the 70's but in my life time, he never really was around much and didn't get much of a reaction.

So based on what I've seen and what he has done, I'm going to say overrated.

I really don't think it's fair to judge someone from another era on today's expectations.

IDK if he actually deserved the Title initially, but he drew money and had the best in ring WWE Championship reign of all time, and it lasted over five years. His "Mr. Backlund" promos in the 90s also rule so yeah he's awesome.

Then, what is the point of this thread?

I'm saying, considering who was around during Backlund's WWE runs, he was overrated. Not wrestling wise but more so star power wise.

I guess I should have mentioned in the OP that I'm talking about his orginal run when he held the title for 5 years. If you're comparing him to his peers in the 70s/early 80s then okay, but I feel it wouldn't be fair to compare him to people from other eras considering that there were different factors at play.

It would be pointless to the topic for me to compare him to people from other era's.

And while I wasn't born during his initial run, from what I've seen, I think he was overrated, considering that the roster back then was pretty damn big and several people such as Hogan and Muraco, among others, had more historical moments in WWE.

Not saying Backlund sucks or anything, I just feel he would get more praise and better suited if he had began his rise about 15 years after his initial successful period.

In fantasy land, I think a Backlund/Angle or Backlund/DB match would be pretty damn good.

Re: Is Bob Backlund overrated/an overachiever?

He was technically one of the best though it sometimes came across goofy and uncoordinated. He was a better athlete than it looked at first. I think he benefited from being McMahon Sr's choice, though Vince Jr got the title off him and onto Hogan as soon as he could. Backlund also had a lot of good challenger heels to play against including Hogan himself in his earlier heel run prior to Hulkamania. Those Hogan vs Backlund matches are some of Hogan's best, and there was an odd chemistry between the two that just worked.

I would say slightly overrated because he should have dropped the title in 1982 rather than late 1983, but that is just my opinion.

if anything, hes underrated. people never brag on him like they do angle or hbk and he can wrestle both those guys under the table. one of the best technical wrestlers there ever was.

Re: Is Bob Backlund overrated/an overachiever?

This is a great question.

I have always thought of Backlund as a right place right time talent.

One thing is for sure he was not over rated as far as abilty. The guy was a great worker.

The problem with Backlund for me is that I believe he held the WWF back, I mean the guy during his first run could not talk people into the building. People who came to see Backlund came to see the WWF champ not Backlund.

Vince Jr. knew it, he wanted Graham to have a longer run, but Sr. wanted a wreslter on top. You can have all the wrestling ability in the world but charisma is what makes a guy special, and there is no denying that Backlund did not have it during his first run. Now his second run was different, he actually thrived then.
