Forgive me, I was like 8 when all this went down so I simply can't remember. Austin won the Rumble, HBK left, Taker won the title from Sid, Hart was turning heel.
That's a lot going on. So can someone please explain to me both the backstage and on screen reason for all of these questions:
Why, did Austin not get his title match?
How did Sid win the belt?
How did Taker become number one contender?
When exactly did HBK return from "injury"
What was the build up and aftermath of all of this?
Technically he was already eliminated but the referees didn't see it, so they kinda took away his WM title match and instead replaced it with the 4 way over the top rope elimination match at the Final Four PPV instead, which was for the title and featured the "final 4" guys in the RR (excluding fake Diesel lol). Plus his feud with Bret was the best thing for him to continue at WM, and that didn't need the title.
How did Sid win the belt?
Because he never got his rematch against HBK (lost his smile, gave up the title, was up for grabs in that 4 way match), he got his title match the Raw after the Final Four against the winner (Bret) and won it there.
How did Taker become number one contender?
You know, I just don't remember lol. Maybe because he was the last to be eliminated in the 4 way match with the help of Austin and Bret was dealing with Austin so that left Undertaker as the #1 contender? Someone else would have to help answer this one lol.

King of the Ring, I *think*. Was supposed to happen in the Canadian Stampede PPV but he pulled out or something.

Oh man, so so sooo much lol. America Vs Canada was the main part, with Undertaker defending his belt against the likes of Vader, Austin, Mankind etc before losing it to Bret, all the while building up to Kane's debut in the background. Bret Vs Undertaker lead to Undertaker Vs HBK which lead to Kane's debut, while Bret Vs HBK took place afterwards and the Montreal Screwjob took place, then Austin skyrocketed and him Vs HBK was set for WM with Undertaker getting one more chance at HBK then moved onto Kane full time. Sid left not long after WM with a back injury and some other behind the scenes bullshit and went to ECW, then WCW.

That's exactly how & why he became #1 contender although Bret/Sid had a cage match for the World Wrestling Federation Championship on the RTWM and whoever won would be the champion going into their respective match at WM13 (Taker/Sid and Hart/Austin).

yes it was a cage match between sid and bret , in which resulted in Bret's "break down" , austin trolled him bad after the match

Thanks guys. My first Mania was 14. Like literally the first thing I remember from watching WWF/E was Austin/Tyson and DX. Like I seriously don't remember seeing anything before that. I actually do remember Kane's debut somewhat. Obviously, I've gone back and watched a lot.
On paper, this was one of the most confusing periods.
it comes down to cage match between Bret vs Sid, the ending of cage match is epic and we never see anything like this anymore...WWE lost it in term on writing.
As far as the aftermath, I would suggest getting WWE Classics On Demand and watch The Monday Night War. The last half of every month is showing Raw is War around that time frame right now.
WrestleMania 13 was kind of built from the middle of 1996 with Shawn Michaels, Stone Cold Steve Austin, The Undertaker and Sid Vicious all beginning their big pushes and then Bret Hart returned at the end of the year. Personally i would advise you to go on a site called IOffer and purchase whole year long DVD's of Raw as i did in buying 1996 through to 2001 but for you to concentrate on 1997 which is again something i have done seeing as 1997 was my favorite year in wrestling as a whole.
