Default The Hollywood Blonds

Just after finishing watching "Brian Pillman: Loose Cannon"(great watch and I'd recommend it to all wrestling fans) and I was wondering if anyone could shed some light on who is believed to have made the decision to split up the Hollywood Blonds when they were starting to get really over in WCW around 93. They were really top notch together and I think the story of them being thrown together and making it work through their friendship is really inspiring. They were both ambitious guys but took what they were given and ran with it alot like Beer Money in TNA in recent years. It would be great to see young guys in WWE do likewise but it feels like the chemistry and charisma just isn't there with the likes of Ziggler & Swagger and Truth & Kingston. Hopefully the 3 hour Raws will allow time for these guys to express themselves more. Anyways, I'm rambling now so yeah, anyone know who was on the booking committee in WCW at the time cos Dusty Rhodes and Flair seemed quite high on the Blonds and Hogan hadn't arrived until 94.

Was about to do a triute thread on the Hollywood blonds!

The most underated short lived tag team in history, pure class!

They split them up when Pillman injured his ankle and couldn't wrestle in the match that they were due to drop the tag titles (they had already filmed the new champs as the champs so they had to drop the belts).

Austin was due to win the US title and fued with Ric Flair over the WCW championship, but Bischof signed Hogan and thats that bassically.

Austin got the call and he was off to ECW and he never looked back.

if Pillman was alive in Attitude Era it will be a dream for hardy boys-Edge&christian and Dudley boys face Hollywood Blondes in WWF/E...i think one of reason they split up is politics, some one in the back pulling the string.

What you said about modern tag teams not having the chemistry and charisma is only half true, IMO. Austin and Pillman were both 1 in a million, or at least Austin was. It would be hard to find anyone aside from a few of the really big names that clicked with their wrestling personas as well as Austin did. He got how to give a promo almost right away, and it shows in his Hollywood Blonde's work.

I think one of the problems is that tag teams aren't given enough time to flex their verbal muscles. Young and Titus are the first tag in a long time that have been allowed to show some real personality, and while I like Guerrero in her role, she is hampering Ziggler and Swagger. They could have that chemistry, but we'll never find out.

This match is a great display of Hollywood Blonds tag team quality:

Match had ton of heel character work and psychology implemented by Austin and Pillman. Bagwell's face in peril segment wasn't the most inspired but the Blonds' control of the match during that period kept the match strong. Scorpio's hot tag was at a blazing pace which made for a highly exciting final stretch.

Although i'm happy with how things turned for both men as far as their on screen careers went whilst they lasted i would have loved to have seen The Hollywood Blondes continue long term as a tag team because they were fucking epic. I've heard Stone Cold Steve Austin say many times that he basically learnt how to work a mic so well on the back of being teamed with Brian Pillman and then pushing it in ECW and whilst Stone Cold Steve Austin was a better heel whilst they were together you could see Brian Pillman was a much more natural speaker.

It's a shame that Eric Bischoff wasn't long sighted enough to look past Hulk Hogan and his friends to see what he really had in Stone Cold Steve Austin and Brian Pillman and i bet there isn't a day that goes by he doesn't regret not allowing Stone Cold Steve Austin to simply be himself and allowing Brian Pillman to go to ECW short term. If WCW had been longer sighted they could have seen that The Hollywood Blondes could have been a similar team to D-Generation X as the similarities in the chemistry Shawn Michaels and Triple H had with each other either together or against each other is very similar to that of Stone Cold Steve Austin and Brian Pillman and they could have feuded on and off and teamed up on and off for years.

You can see how natural Austin is on the mic, even back then. Pillman's not too shabby either.

Austin gets gushed over a lot but Pillman was also a genius. I didn't know the Hollywood Blondes well (as a lifetime WWE mark WCW was just something else to watch) but after watching the Pillman DVD and remembering his antics as a Horseman, I'm certain that he was destined for stardom, too bad injury held him down.

As far as the HBs were concerned I believe that had a tag match against Arn & Flair that I really liked. I need to do more research on them as a team.

They had a two out of three falls match against them at the Clash Of The Champions 23. Really good main event.

No disrespect man, but Pillman....well IMO I just think he gets way too much credit. As a face he just plain sucked. AS a heel, well heck any wrestler with a hint of charisma can act like a wild card. It is frankly the easiest role to play. Simply "shoot" and people think you are a genius. Nope Pillman was talented in the ring, but a great talker.....lots of people can act like a butthole.
