Default Classic Heels: Rowdy Roddy Piper

I'm not much of a Bruno Sammartino fan, but this Piper's Pit was flawless by both guys. Piper really knew how to be the cocky heel.

The infamous coconut!

Piper didn't even need to get in the ring to squash a jobber!

Piper was one of my favourites growing up, and I would say he's easily one of the greatest of all time when it comes to promo cutting. He's a damn genius! My Grandparents are Scottish and when I used to watch wrestling as a kid, they would always watch it with me and cheer for Piper. My brother was (still is) a huge Rowdy Roddy Piper fan and, as I was always a Bret supporter, at Wrestlemania 8 we were rooting against each other. For weeks before and after that match we would wrestle each other as Bret and Piper, using a tea towel for the IC championship belt. Whenever I think of Piper it reminds me of this great, golden era of wrestling memories.

I used to openly cheer for Piper back in my school days while all my friends were Hulkamaniacs. Lots of fun. Wrestling is missing that these days. Who is Cena's Roddy Piper? Nobody today on that level.

Other than not having a WWF Title reign, Piper was a perfectly booked heel in the 80s. He talked a lot of stuff and got molten heat from audiences across the country, and he hardly ever lost clean.

I should have said main event heel. Piper not losing much greatly added to his heat as he would get counted out or DQ'd and piss off the fans. The people couldn't wait for Hogan to kick his ass. Back then people paid to see the big heels finally get beat.

Same thing with Flair.

The few times Piper was pinned in those days were wisely kept to house shows. There are listings of being pinned by Hogan and Jimmy Snuka on house show cards, but as far as I can remember he never got pinned on televised matches. And I agree that this helped keep the character red hot.

I was thinking how that contrasts with modern heels. They're the exact opposite, and incidentally have no heel heat. Funny how that one works.

Piper was the man in the heel division. He could do it all. He could go on the mic and in the ring.
