Re: Classic Wrestling General Discussion & Review Thread
Well he was already stellar in the early part of the Attitude Era. (it did start in 1997)
I wonder if he would have stayed with the company after the screwjob. Smith & Neidhart bolted. Owen stayed b/c of his contract. Pillman was up in the air. We'll never know, but it is some food for thought.

Although, I suppose there's a chance he would've languished in midcard hell cuz they probably would've done that stupid angle with Goldust and Terri that they ended up doing a few months later with Val Venis instead...

Not really. This made sense. The story was that Jake was blinded because Martel had sprayed him with his cologne called arrogance in his eyes. Like I said, this isn't for everyone, but if you enjoy psychology in wrestling, this is a masterpiece.
Re: Classic Wrestling General Discussion & Review Thread
Masterpiece of wrestlecrap? Then yep.
Wrestlers bumble around the ring for "x" amount of time. Face points around as the crowd goes nuts for him in the direction of the heel. Heel tries it and doesn't have to same luck. Falls into a predicament, often times a comedy spot that leaves him in peril. Face manages to get the upper hand and win. Or, the heel lifts the blindfold to cheat a la Triple H vs D-Lo Brown from RAW Roulette in 2002. Wash. Rinse. Repeat.
Bad. Even for 1991 when Roberts vs Martel occured.

Well it probably would've been similar because before he died, he was making adult videos with Terri and it was obvious that they were gonna have Terri turn on Goldust.

Just watched the Blindfold match. Never actually seen it before despite being a big Roberts fan. It was fun and they did the best they could with what really is a terrible gimmick on paper lol.

Speaking of Jake, the WCW Dustin Rhodes 6/9/92 and Dirty White Boy match from SMW are definitely two of his best outings especially in his performance. The Rhodes match isn't a carryjob or anything, but its a picture perfect demonstration of how Jake can make even the most cliche of spots (such as faking an injury or deliberately over selling to lure Rhodes into a trap) and make it infinitely interesting.

I'd throw in his match against DiBiase in '85 too. Mid-South WrestleFest I think it was.

Great story-telling, psychology and working the crowd. Obviously not going to be a technical masterpiece with a 6 foot 6 guy and a 7 foot guy, but one of the greatest matches of all time. Perhaps the greatest moment in wrestling history when Hogan slams Andre.
