About that, by the way- I can't see a heel finishing the streak... The only way to do it properly was to turn Goldberg Heel. I mean, can you see a heel like Jericho defeating him? And by cheating? Anticlimax, in my opinion.
Goldberg was still hugely popular even after his streak ended. I went back and watched all the PPV's after his streak ended and he still got huge reactions for the most part. The only negative reactions I can remember were a couple Canadian PPV's (Mayhem and New Blood Rising) and at Starrcade 1999 when a face Bret Hart vs. a face Goldberg and some of the Bret Hart fans chanted Goldberg sucks but there were plenty of Goldberg chants too.
Goldberg was going to be a star. You could tell that very early on because the crowd took to him almost instantly. The streak really helped him but I still think he would have been a big deal without it. Remember many wrestlers have had winning streaks and not gotten over like Goldberg did.
I also think a heel had to end the streak because it wasn't a passing of the torch situation. Ending the streak was more about creating a heel rival for Goldberg. I think having him lose clean would have made him look too weak. It had to be a screwjob followed up with an angle for Goldberg to eventually get revenge against that heel for screwing him out of his streak.
The Goldberg being heel thing wouldn't have worked either. WCW tried him as a heel in 2000 and got away from it pretty quickly because the crowd just wasn't into it.
