Bret Hart & Roddy Piper got a lot of heat for WrestleMania VIII.

Not sure how many of you guys know about this but I wanted to get your vibes on this. I was just listening to Piper on Youtube talk about his match with Bret at Wrestlemania VIII and he talks about how it got a lot of heat with the office for the bleeding. They pretty much asked Bret if Piper pressured him into bleeding, which of course Bret said no.

I've felt this match has been very underrated personally. The emotion they invested in the build up and the match itself as well as the in ring story telling they did was phenomenal and Piper was pretty much passing the torch to Bret during this match.

You can hear Piper talking about this here.

However what do you guys think in regards to the blood situation. Honestly, I'm not the kinda guy that's like 'Oh we need blood to make a match great' because we don't, however in that match I think it really did add to it. I remember watching it for the first time and hearing the crack when Piper did the punch to the head before the bulldog and thinking 'Woah' at the time and I specifically remember seeing the blood on the mat after the bulldog which to me just says it's perfect timing and how good it was they did that match. However what are your thoughts in regards to this?

I loved that match it's on my list of ten fav mania matches. I think it's stupid they would get heat I'm also not a guy that thinks that a match needs blood to be good. How ever it does and has help in matches before look at Brett vs Austin and mania 13. Austin passing out from blood loss was one of the biggest moments in Austin's career. I'm fine with blood as long as they don't over do it.

Yeah, to be honest I would often forget about it when I think about great matches up until recently and I kinda kick myself for doing so cause it's always been one of my favourite matches also, simply for the story telling and emotion they built into it was so good. It's like who did you want to win at the time as both guys were so loved. Yeah the Bret and Austin is a perfect example actually. I'm pretty much on the same vibe as you are.

Not sure why they got heat really for it, specially them saying to Bret 'Did Piper encourage you to do it' kinda thing. It's like, why would they even say that? lol

Bret Hart has told two different versions behind the Wrestlemania VIII bleeding.

The first was that Hart and Piper decided to blade, and no one knew they bladed. They didn't get into trouble, unlike Flair and Macho Man because everyone thought it was for real.

The second I read from an article on wzronline was that Hart was kicked by Piper, which opened up his forehead, and he was ready to fight Piper for real in the back.

Which one is true is a mystery.
Obviously I don't know as I wasn't there but I don't buy that second one to be honest lol Bret was always fine with accidents, I mean look at how he talks about the Goldberg thing now. He's still fine with it and doesn't blame him as he knows it was an accident so I definitely don't think he felt like that with Piper as those two were really close and they were both in the wrestling industry. They probably loved that stuff.

Both are true.

He bladed, despite it being against policy, so he pretended it was legit. Backstage, he and Piper continued to pretend it was legit.

While the article was on Wrestle Zone, the actual interview was with Renee Young. So, in that context, I don't think he would get on a WWE-related podcast and disclose a version of events that differ from what Vince saw.

I can't remember what Bret exactly said in his book about this, but I'm sure they planned the match out and the blading in a diner somewhere. What I heard anyway. It's always been said they decided to blade and keep it quiet from everyone.

They did a good job of doing it too in the match IMO. It certainly added to the drama of the match and was another dynamic in putting Bret over.

Yeah, like I say with the timing of it. I remember when I first watched it and heard the crack on Bret's head from the punch and then the bulldog after. I really thought the punch split Bret's head open at the time. It was so good how they did it lol

Favorite wrestlemania match of all time, thought the blood added to the match tbh.
Better than Bret/Owen or HBK/taker? Top 5 for sure but HBK/Taker is my favorite.

http://www.wrestlingforum.com/colum...ontinental-championship-wrestlemania-8-a.html chance to cheeky plug my review too :p

You used my YT upload too :) nice
Ah did I haha. I had no idea. Bit of promo there for you haha.

Great match! I enjoyed it. The blood added to the story. But I can believe they got heat for it b/c reportedly Flair got heat for blood in the main event against Savage.
Yeah I know, kinda makes me wonder how long they've been against it.

As always, you're an absolute fountain of knowledge :)

Depends how you look at things. I think the emotion in the Bret/Piper match was really invested in so I can understand why it comes among these matches :)

That promo was bollocks, What the fuck did I just watch.
Two guys who really know how to build up emotion for a match.
