Who has seen this movie? Do you like it for nostalgia? Would you recommend it to other classic wrestling fans? is it too bad of a movie for you to recommend it?
I want to hear your thoughts about No Holds Barred (1989) Thank you
I didn't mind it personally but it's not something I would recommend to another fan or would watch a second time. It's not great but I didn't think it was that bad either, so I'm mixed on the film. Probably Hogan's best non-Rocky III film but that's not saying much since he isn't a good actor and his movies are pretty much shit. The acting here is no different from his other movies, he's cartoonish just like the film itself and it might be fun for you to see some of the other wrestling personalities in it like Stan Hansen, Jesse Ventura, Mean Gene etc. The No Holds Barred theme and the "What's That Smell? Dookie!" scene are the only highlights of the movie for me. You could take it or leave it but you wouldn't be missing anything special by not seeing it.
Just watch They Live or The Princess Bride if you want to a see movie starring a wrestler so bad or Zeus as Deebo in the Friday films. They're much much better.
It's an ok film, you don't lose anything by watching it and I've certainly sat through worse in my time.
To break the film down for you just imagine your typical Hogan feud between 1985 and 1995 but played out on the big screen, my highlight was Joan Severance who I had a major thing for after See No Evil, Hear No Evil with Richard Pryor and Gene Wilder.
I loved the movie as a kid. Not really an Oscar winner here, but when you're a young wrestling fan, you thought it was awesome. Rip vs Zeus, how could you not love that? That being said, if it was on TV and I didn't have anything else to do, I would watch it again.
It's a horrendous movie, but worth watching for "WrestleCrap" reasons. Though, to be fair, I loved it when it came out. My friend and I watched it when it aired for the "No Holds Barred: The Movie/The Match" PPV (don't worry, we didn't pay for it). The movie at least got us pretty excited for the Hogan/Brutus v Savage/Zeus match.
I love it. It's pretty much completely trash and exactly what you would expect as a vehicle for a meglomaniacal Hogan on his ultimate ego trip. There's a chapter in the first Wrestlecrap book that sums the whole wretched affair up perfectly.
A highly recommended pile of shit.
I went to go see it in the theaters. At the time I fucking loved it! Now that I'm older I see it for what it is. Lol. Terrible quality movie, but that doesn't mean that once every few years that I won't sit down and watch it.
I bought it. It was $6.99 on Vudu. I collect all my movies on digital and have close to 1900 movies there. It was actually less than $6.99 though since I used gift cards that I got for $5 off. Basically cost me $2. I could've got a better movie real cheap with that $5 off but this one was on sale so whatever.
I bought it. This movies great already. I feel like people just hate on it because it's popular to do so. Look at the reviews and assume it's terrible. This is a cool movie.
Yeah that basically sums up the entire theme of the movie. It's beyond ridiculous.
I'm glad you're enjoying it. I found my old VHS of NHB and this thread has convinced me to re-watch it tonight.
I loved this movie back in the day and I love it now. It's like all of Hogan's movies (Mr Nanny, Suburban Commando, etc), if you just take it for what it is and have fun with it, then it's nothing but fun and good entertainment. Don't expect a Daniel Day Lewis flick and you'll be fine lol
I thought it was great for its time. The fact Hogan was wearing the white strapped WWF Championship was just awesome.
