Suppose Shawn had turned face instead of Diesel at Survivor Series 94...

Do you think 1995 would have worked out better with Shawn as the face and Diesel remaining heel? Granted, it's almost certain in that scenario Vince still would have made him bland whitemeat face Shawn that we did get in 1996, but since he at least had experience playing that role in the Rockers, that would be in my mind better than giving the role to Nash, who didn't really have the experience in that role at that point. The basic storyline could still play out--Nash still beats Backlund in 8 seconds, but now does so as a brutal heel champ who seems unstoppable, and a reformed Shawn beats him for it at WrestleMania XI--and holds it for a good part of 1995, although I'd still give it back to Bret at some point before year's end. Workable?

The world is a cartoon; just go with the flow.

Of course it wouldn't.

The problem wasn't who the champion was. It was who the champion had, which was no quality heels.

Doesn't matter who the champion is, as a babyface, you're still fucked. If Shawn doesn't remain heel, you have no Sid, who was only brought back to work with Diesel. If you don't have Sid, you likely have Bundy as the first post-Wrestlemania challenger from the Million Dollar Corporation. You're still getting the Mabel push. You still have every problem you had in '95, except a different guy is going to get the blame 21 years later for why it was such a bad year.

From a business perspective, this definitely changes nothing. On that end, the only difference between Shawn, as champion, and Diesel, as champion, as that Shawn could sell-out MSG. Neither could do shit anywhere else.

So, from a product standpoint and a business standpoint, doesn't really matter who the champion was. That year had more problems than who carried the prop.

Yes. At least Michaels would have been producing good to great matches with more believable challengers. Diesel wasn't babyface material, period.

Would have been better but do they put the belt on Michaels so soon as they did Diesel? I don't think so. I think Bret wins the belt back at Royal Rumble from Backlund. A heel Diesel wins the Royal Rumble. Michaels wins King of the Ring and beats Diesel at Summerslam for the title.
