Am I the only one who shudders at the mention of the LOD?

Look, I loved the old "Challenge of the Superfriends" cartoon. And if you don't know what that is, that's the original Legion of Doom.

Not sure why this bothers me but it does...here's my confession.

I hate it when the Road Warriors are referred to as the LOD.

When Paul Ellering introduced us all to the Legion Of Doom it was a stable of wrestlers that included men like Jake "The Snake", The Spoiler, King Kong Bundy, Arn, etc....

So in the 80's when the Road Warriors were in their prime, hardly anyone referred to them as the LOD. When the Road Warriors and Ellering left for the AWA there were very few who called them the LOD, they were pretty much still the Road Warriors.

But then Vince got his hands on them...changed their music to that cheesefest "What a Rush" crap. Gave them plastic looking shoulder pads and then constantly booked them horribly, like it or not. He re-defined them as the "LOD".

The Road Warriors of the AWA and NWA would have dominated, but not in Vince's playground.

There are posters on here who actually think Demolition was better, lol. Thank you Vince.

Therefore when I hear or read the term LOD associated with Hawk, Animal and Ellering...frankly it pisses me off because they were so much more than that.

Okay Classic Wrestling Rant over ;)

Road Warriors or LOD?

:clap I was the biggest Road Warrior mark there could be. I remember when Animal debuted by himself as The Road Warrior on WTBS. I agree with everything you said.

About the cartoon, did you ever thing the Legion of Doom's headquarters looked like Darth Vader's helmet? I haven't watched it since the 70's but i seem to remember thinking it looked like it a bit.

I definitely agree. The Road Warriors just sounds better and The Legion Of Doom had the connotations of a larger group. I know Vince likes to put his own stamp on things but there's no need to come up with worse names so they don't have to use their NWA name. How is two men a fucking Legion?

Good point (as usual) Greenlawler.

I was a WWF guy so only ever knew them as LOD, but upon learning of the original LOD I did wonder how AWA\NWA fans felt about that.

Funny though how their WWE released DVD was entitled "Road Warriors: Life and Death of the Most Dominant Tag-Team in Wrestling History".

For me I much prefer them as Legion Of Doom, possibly because this is how I was introduced to them so when I heard them as Road Warriors it didn't feel right to me, because as I say I knew them as LOD.

I liked the look and the shoulder pads too, I thought they looked bad ass, I would like to see the tag teams come in with the impact they had too, when you compare their look to today's wrestler, they're so generic now, they tried with The Ascension, which I really appreciate but they didn't really have the 'Oomph' that LOD had.

I mean, imagine if we'd never heard of Hawk and Animal, and then one day they came on Raw looking like this ....

We'd be like 'Woah, who's these guys' and would be talking about them for days, however instead we get this ...

That's my thoughts on it anyway, as I say, I do think a huge part of this though is because this was how I knew them first, it wasn't until ages after I heard them being named as the Road Warriors and I was like 'Eh', so this probably plays a huge part in it for me :)

I like both names about the same. Though yes, could have lived without that stupid dummy... don't know who thought that was a good idea (not really, it's kind of obvious).

Though, I absolutely love Demolition so feel free to ignore my opinion on their name :p

I loved the theme music, it got me pumped every time, and still does, but the "what a rush" at the start is beyond cheesy (as well as making him end every interview with it. I feel that vince underutilized them during the attitude era, just played them off as being the "old guard" when he could have kept them as monsters.

Don't think you're being very fair here. No one denies the Road Warriors were a bigger name and had success around the world, just that strictly in WWE Demolition was superior.

As for the name matter... sounds like Vince trying to "make them his own" or whatever... not sure what I think on it though. Both names are pretty cool, its not like he stuck them with a terrible name or anything.
I suppose I'd prefer Road Warriors as it was more accurate of a name I suppose.

It has more to do with the way they were booked than with the name, you actually used the words "superior" and "Demolition" in the same sentence with the Road Warriors. That should tell you right there that there was a difference in the LOD and the Road Warriors. I have been round and round with the "Demolition for GOAT crew", so I DO NOT want to go down that path again,

I associate the LOD with IMO ridiculous music, puppets, air brushed helmets, and plastic shoulder pads. I associate the Road Warriors with pain.

Unless someone is arguing that Demolition was more influential than Road warriors, I don't see the problem in someone saying that demolition was better. They might prefer Demolition's wrestling style, theme music, attire compared to RW. Mainly because they watched them first.

Undertaker is greater than kane but surely someone can prefer Kane's character over taker's?

Count me in as one who prefers Demolition. I am aware that they were merely Vince’s attempt to capitalize on the Road Warriors’ success, and that the Road Warriors were the superior athletes. Nevertheless I loved the way Demolition would hammer their opponents down repeatedly and the way they always promised to “kick your stinkin’ teeth in”. They have the greatest entrance theme song to this day. Sue me.

Greenlawler = how were they poorly booked in the WWF (at least in their first run)?
As far as I remember, they were unstoppable and never ate a pin. They beat everyone - Demolition, Orient Express, Power & Glory, Hart Foundation, Nasty Boys, Rockers, Money Inc. Had a Count out loss to the Natural Disasters, as I recall, but that was to build the feud. Their title loss was not televised and basically never explained/mentioned (as they went off TV for a while).

As has already been alluded to in that I think that it goes back to their perception and how they were portrayed in the WWE. It felt like the WWE was trying to make a caricature of them although it never fully succeeded one hundred percent because fans remembered their dominance in the AWA and NWA. Still there was a noticeable difference in perception with their WWE run. The Road Warriors were too serious of a tag team to have the over the top shoulder pads and the dummy "Rocco" as has already been mentioned. These were guys that were so credible on their own that even if pro wrestling was not staged but an actual sporting event that they would still be as dominant.

I personally felt they were out of place when they were in WWE. Not sure if it was that they were past their prime because of change in times or if it was a booking screw up. They were introduced like they were legends but were nothing close to that in ring and (were made to) looked weak. The only legend who got a good treatment from WWE was Ric Flair, thanks to HBK/HHH. Even Hogan in his Mr.America and pseudo NWO run looked more like a joke.

To say the Legion of Doom was treated as weak in the WWF the first time around is not accurate. Heck, the moment Vince got Animal and Hawk to join the WWF, he pretty much pushed Demolition right down the ladder and out the door. He gave them a good run with the tag team titles, and might have been longer were it not for Hawk's drug problems. The second time around was ridiculous, but the first time around the LOD got to take care of business.

Of course, though...as the biggest mark around for Animal and Hawk, it is clearly the Road Warriors over LOD any day of the week. And this match shows why...while their entrance in the WWF was cool, there was something about pre-WWF. When the drumbeat and opening guitar lick of "Ironman" sounded, you knew shit was about to get real.

I liked both names too. I disagree about them not being booked properly in their first run with Vince. 1990 was a year of transition where Ultimate Warrior and Modern Day Warrior and Road Warriors WERE all being primed to take over.

Notice how many WARRIORS were being pushed at the top in the summer right AFTER Warrior got the belt? It was said that was the real reason Vince called them Legion of Doom and Kerry Von Erich lost the modern day warrior moniker to Texas Tornado.

The Road Warriors came in and actually were allowed to say Demolition were their imitators which is just as wild as Flair coming in the year after calling himself the Real World Champion.

Road Warriors came in immediately on their first ppv event and cost Demolition the titles to the Hart Foundation (HF challenged Demo on the post Superstar show right after Mania VI to show how RW got put into the tag team main event right away).

They teamed up with Ultimate Warrior at Survivor Series on their 2nd ppv (the debut of another NWA star in Mean Mark as Taker). They crushed Power and Glory at WM VI and the following ppv beat Nasty Boys at The Mecca of wrestling. When they lost the titles as mentioned there was really no big explanation and they made a big return at WM 8. Now after that I agree it went downhill after SummerSlam.

The Road Warriors also avoided the Vince Mcmahon WCW burial lol when Demo couldn't pin them.
