How close did Bret come to leaving WWE in 1992?

I recall reading at the time that the reason that Bret Hart lost the Intercontinental title in January 1992 was due to negotiations with WCW (and fear that WCW might pull a reverse Ric Flair on them). Later that year, when Hart was set to lose the Intercontinental title at SummerSlam, it was reported by Alex Marvez in the Miami Herald that Hart was rumored to be going to WCW after his contract expired.

Did Bret have an expiring contract at any point in 1992, and if so how close did he come to jumping to WCW? If the Jan 1992 scenario had any truth to it, it does shed some light on the Montreal decision years later.

Re: How close did Bret come to leaving WWE in 1992?

The deal was Bret's contract had a negotiation window (where he could opt out) and a roll over period (where if he didn't opt out, it automatically renews).

So, he negotiates and supposedly agreed to a deal with WCW and was even scheduled to debut at the 1/21 Clash. According to Meltzer, he was going to jump with the IC Title but the idea for Piper to end up with the belt was made weeks prior and possibly may have indirectly swayed Bret into exploring his options. Problem was, the negotiation window had expired prior and his contract was automatically extended for several months.

Here is how it went down. Bret asked for a raise but Vince declined to even consider that, and asked him to try somewhere else if he is not content with the pay. Pillman gave Bret Ric Flair's number. When Bret called WCW, the story is that Flair literally fell of his chair. At that point Flair had a great amount of respect for Bret's abilities. Flair said that he could come up with a deal wherein Bret would have to work less than half of his WWF schedule and get $200,000 a year for it. Bret verbally agreed to this but at the last moment Flair said that he did not have a hand in financial matters as Jim Herd had control on that front. Jim Herd being a smartass offered Bret $150K a year which was just a little higher than what Bret was paid in the Fed including the variable component. Bret outright turned down the offer and lost some respect for Flair for not keeping up his word.

The incident that I am speaking of happened sometime in late 1989 or early 1990.

I'll have to dig out Bret's book to see what the man said.

Would have broken my little kid heart if he left then tbh.

Re: How close did Bret come to leaving WWE in 1992?

I just had a quick look at Bret's book and it says the incident that I described earlier happened in October 1989 and apart from a conversation with Harley Race in 92 about jumping ship to WCW, there is no mention of any real talk.
