Looking Back: Stone Cold Vs. Undertaker SummerSlam 98

I just re-watched WWE Summer Slam 1998, and the main event with Stone Cold Vs. Undertaker plays off incredibly awkward to me. The two of them needing to have a match just to "see who's better" or whatever just seemed to be dropped on everyone out of nowhere.

A lot of things bothered me about the whole match. From the moment the Undertaker enters it just seems like he is rushing around and in a hurry to get the match over with and go somewhere else... Then fast forwarding to the end of the match... my goodness what a terrible finish to a PPV main event. Undertaker basically stumbles right into a quick stunner and then... thats all folks. Then he stands up and hands the belt to Austin...

I kinda see what that they were going for, but man oh man... two of the best in the WWE at the top of their game delivering such an awkward performance...

Does anyone else feel this way about this match at Summer Slam 98? Any more thoughts about how the match plays out when you saw it originally, or took another look at it?

Maybe I should watch this again. I was drinking the WWF kool aid back then and have nothing but mark-tinged good memories of this match.

That's the way I saw it originally as well. I saw this PPV live, and honestly this might be one of the few PPV's I haven't re watched a few times. I just took another look over the weekend. The whole event itself is great, I just caught weird vibes off the main event.

Who knows, maybe it's just me... just curious to see what others think of the match.

Undertaker and Austin don't work well with each other. They have no chemistry. Their matches at Judgement Day 2001 and Backlash 2002 were terrible as well.

Both being pretty much knocked out early on didn't help matters, plus the mixture of both of them being used to calling their own matches and it ended up not going as well as expected.

Austin pretty much said this on his podcast.

Same here. That was the 2nd WWF ppv I ever watched and I used to think EVERYTHING was epic back then.

Wow, I haven't heard Austin talk about this before. Was Undertaker the guest when he discusses this, or was he talking about it with someone else?(I just want to look it up and hear about it) I didn't realize both possibly had their bell rang early on. That would explain many things then...

They never had great chemistry. They also put up a WOAT match candidate at Rock Bottom of that year.

Nah Undertaker wasn't on the podcast, sorry I can't remember which episode it was on, could have been the first one with Heyman. He doesn't discuss it at length, just briefly mentions it whilst talking about something else I think.

A lot of people have said how good the match was, having watched it I have to disagree. Shame to because of the incredible build with the match.
