IWC Hunter Hearst Helmsley

Ok, so I posted this in the classic section because I feel like most people around here speak/post with thought rather than emotion.

Maybe I'm COMPLETELY wrong, but does anyone else feel like hunter would have been an Internet darling in the mid 90's? I know I'm a member, so I don't use the term in a demeaning manner, but the Internet tends to focus on guys that aren't main eventers, and enjoy "work rate".

I feel like hhh was the dolph ziggler of the 90's in a way. He was a great worker, had charisma, could talk, etc.

Obviously he got the monster push, but does anyone else think that the 95/96 hhh would be what us Internet fans love? I'm sorry if you think this is a stupid post, but I'm watching Raw from '96, and it reminds me of how hhh came off as a great worker that was overlooked at the time (and once he got noticed, people said it was because he kissed ass and dated the bosses daughter).

In my personal opinion, he always came across as the best mid-carder at the time, and seemed to have tons of potential.

Agree 100%

To me he seemed head and shoulders above the rest of the mid card in 95-96

Re: IWC Hunter Hearst Helmsley

Dude go read forums from mid 99 until the day he got injured, he was basically the ziggler/bryan/ambrose/rollins to rock and austin's cena and reigns. He was THE internet darling at the time.

Re: IWC Hunter Hearst Helmsley

I was a huge fan of wrestling back then and he seemed very boring. I didn't always like Bret and Shawn but no matter where they were on the card, they gave you quality matches. Hunter to me in 1995-96 WWF was Lord Steven Regal in 1993-94 WCW. People never cared about Helmsley as a talent until entertaining talents were put around him.

I may or may not have commented on this in the "Kliq" debate but the ultimate irritation with Shawn's backstage politics was they were unnecessary. With Hunter, I get it. He's a hard-working guy but he landed the nepotism lottery ticket twice in being Shawn's best friend and Stephanie's husband. He'd be a fool not to play it.

I was a huge mark for him until he got corrupted by absolute power.

Re: IWC Hunter Hearst Helmsley

Agree with the poster who called 95-96 Helmsley a Regal ripoff. I was only a mild fan of HHH at the time. Didn't think he was anything special, but I liked Regal (my, how the times have changed!), so I didn't mind Regal Jr. I think most of the internet would have been with me in tolerating HHH but not going much further than that, though I'm sure he'd have had a small cult following.

It is true that HHH was a huge internet darling in the late 90s. I personally didn't get it. I thought he was boring. And while the Rock had his share of (mostly insane) haters, Austin haters were few and far between....at least at the places I frequented.

Re: IWC Hunter Hearst Helmsley

I see what you guys are saying about him being a Regal ripoff, but he just seemed so much more talented than the rest of the guys he was facing in the Midcard during the mid 90's. I know people dislike him around here, but he seemed to be that guy who was talented, but ended up getting buried (for a little while) due to the curtain call incident. It just kind of struck me that he might have been the underdog type at the time that we rally around.

Re: IWC Hunter Hearst Helmsley

HHH was like that and the internet was around. I think it mostly kicked in after the MSG thing and everyone noticed how he was being treated badly in the booking.

People were especially upset when he had to put over this rookie getting an undeserved push, Rocky Maivia, for the Intercontinental Title.

Obviously, the late 90s were a different time.
