Camp Cornette Killed 1996

I just watched Summerslam 1996....my god was it bad. This was probably THE worst summerslam I've seen so far (and the past 3 were no great shakes either). The mid-card was VERY weak at this point, as there's no direction with anyone at this point. Vince has merely been pushing tits for the past 3 months as his only sell....

BUT to me, the biggest problem with this era, and probably one of the biggest reasons why Vader never fully took off and why HBK's first babyface title run sucked is because Camp Cornette as the main heel faction sucked. It simply ran for WAY too long. Think about it, basically from Yokozuna until this point, Jim Cornette was the biggest protagonist for faces and I just don't think it worked at any point. I love heel managers, and The Heenan Family worked wonders in the 80s, but Camp Cornette just felt so bleh.

Summerslam 1996 was basically Cornette and Mason running around in every match trying to build heat and steam for their wrestlers but it was overkill and annoying.

Eh, even if Bret was there? What would have been different? A summer of setting up Bret vs. HBK rematch?

Re: Camp Cornette Killed 1996

my biggest issue with shawns 1st title run was the finishes of most of his title matches. his (awesome) match with mankind was a dq (i get it was to continue the undertaker angle but shawns the champion), he didnt beat camp cornette at iyh and the finishes for kotr and summerslam were stupid.

cornette and many others bitch about hbks politics backstage (and there was no smoke without fire) but come on its not like he went on a burying spree like Hunters reign of terror

Re: Camp Cornette Killed 1996

I'm the opposite of everybody else. Camp Cornette was probably my favorite thing about 1996 WWF. Vader, Owen, Bulldog were 3 of my 4 favorite wrestlers in the company (Goldust was the other) and I still considered Cornette the GOAT manager. I like how all three of them got a shot at that damned HBK. Now if only one of them would have brought the belt home.....I was gutted when stupid Clarence Mason snatched Owen & Bulldog away.

Re: Camp Cornette Killed 1996

By Summer Slam, there was so little to work with. Bret still hadn't come back. Razor and Diesel had gone to WCW. Ultimate Warrior had left. Ahmed Johnson, the company's second top babyface, had just gone out with an injury. Basically, the only strong feuds they had built up at the time of the event were Undertaker-Mankind and Shawn-Vader. They had the emergence of Sunny, Sable, and to a lesser degree, Marlena, as "sex appeal" but you couldn't use them as much of a selling point for a PPV. They used Austin a little poorly in the Free-For-All match with Yoko and didn't use Hunter or Faarooq at all.

Re: Camp Cornette Killed 1996

I got all the respect in the world for Cornette, but I think his act just didn't work anymore by 1996. Times were changing and Cornette didn't really change from what he did so well in the 80's.

As far as 96 goes, I think WWE didn't really maximize what they had in particular Vader. In fairness to them they had some bad luck along the way with injuries and talent issues but they still had a lot to work with.

Even after Hall and Nash left They had Shawn, Undertaker, Bret, Mankind, Vader, Warrior (and later Sid) to work with at the top. In the mid card they had Austin, Goldust, HHH, Owen, Bulldog and while they weren't very good Ahmed Johnson and Marc Mero were over. The tag team scene wasn't all that great, but Sunny was such a huge star that even a match between the Body Donnas and Godwinns had people interested.

Re: Camp Cornette Killed 1996

the biggest complaint about camp cornette is that it had just run for SO long as the main protagonist. The competition (WCW) was doing the dungeon of doom and the four horseman....the WWF was doing Jim Cornette and Clarence Mason.

Various sites on the internet (411mania.com, lordsofpain.net and others) say Mankind was booked to win the title at Mind Games, but Vince McMahon nixed it during the match.
