Was there a dark gimmick pre-Sullivan?

So since I was a kid I have been a huge mark for dark gimmicks.

From what I recall Kevin Sullivan's Army of Darkness was the first of these I can recall

Members at one point or another included:
Kevin Sullivan, Oliver Humperdink, Billy Graham, Mark Lewin (Purple Haze), Bob Roop (Zodiac), Luna Vachon, Locke (former WWF female wrestler Wenona Littleheart), Nancy Sullivan (Fallen Angel), and Mike Davis.

Obviously the Undertaker is the GOAT dark gimmick of all time, but I wanted to see if anyone knew of something that predated that Florida run of Sullivan?

I know NWA Mid America used a Mummy character with Lawler in the mid 70's, and a Frankenstein character, but both were just silly, not really dark.

Any info?

Interesting information. Never knew any of this. Lawler as a mummy? I'd love to see that.

It was not Lawler as the Mummy.

Right when Lawler turned face for the very first time he teamed with Tojo to face the Mummy and Sam Bass. This Mummy was Ron Wright.

This was 1974

After doing some searching I found out that a wrestler named Benji Ramirez worked as the Mummy in Texas as early as 1966. But I doubt that was truly a dark gimmick.

Damn, how hot was Woman back then. Even when she was managing Doom, hot as hell. Very underrated.

But yeah, I can't think of an older dark gimmick than sullivan's. It trips me out that his dungeon of doom idea was so campy and bad seeing as how he did better stuff before

I know in the 30s and 40s there was a guy who was like a black magic druid-type. It's in one of my hundreds of books, I've got to find it.
BTW, my son thanks you. Here he thought he was spending the day with dad and instead dad is going to be focused on a research project.

Re: Was there a dark gimmick pre-Sullivan?

I remember reading an article where around the late 80's-early 90's in the Juarez territory in Mexico, the Guerrero family feuded with manager who's gimmick was that he was a satanic.

I don't consider myself a Mark or a Smark, just a Pro-Wrestling fan.
