Default Analyze This: Surprises

Things you never expected to see in pro-wrestling

While we have been watching pro-wrestling for years and decades in some cases, there sure have been instances where we would have thought "Wow! I never expected to see that." or "Damn! This has gone too far. I never thought wrestling would come to this level.". I am not talking about storylines like Henry and Hand or Katie Vick.

I am talking about say a 434 day title reign in current times or use of any particular weapon for the first time in a hardcore match or Mankind falling off the top of the cage or the show going on after Owen's death (depending upon how you feel about it) or a WCW/WWE guy match post WCW closure.

Please take it from here. I would especially love to hear from pre-attitude era and territorial era guys who would have potentially had more surprises.

With no internet back then, surprises were far more common and kayfabe meant that secrets were kept much better. An example...the first couple of minutes of this segment on World Championship Wrestling on January 21, 1989...when Ric Flair and Barry Windham had a tag team main event vs. "Hot Stuff" Eddie Gilbert and a mystery partner. Today, the secret would have not been a secret as speculation would have run rampant right before the match happened.

The two undertakers were also surprising.

When the Ultimate Warrior disappeared after SummerSlam '91, it was a total mystery. One of the reasons why I even got into PWI and other magazines was just to figure out what they knew, and they didn't know much.

Then, completely out of nowhere, after the show was almost over at WrestleMania 8, his music hit and he ran out to save Hogan. It was pretty magical.

I never expected to see Warrior back in the WWF, but he came back for what was probably his last run as a regular star (he was more of a side attraction in 1996).

Eric Bischoff showing up on Raw AND hugging Vince McMahon. I was there to see it in person, still can't believe it to this day, to be honest.

And they somehow actually kept it a secret, which is incredibly difficult to do with the dirtsheets and internet. And this was 2003, so the internet was very much a big part of wrestling when this happened.

Chris Benoit biting the dust the way he did was pretty shocking.
