Default HBK in 96

As a kid I used to love HBK's first title run. He was my favorite from 96-97.

Recently just watched some WWF ppvs from 96......WTF?!

HBK was soooo girlish. He has bangs with his pony tail and was NOWHERE near his 92-95 heel run.

I guess as I kid I didn't recognize it, but no wonder WCW was kicking WWF's @$$.

I look back now in 2014, with more nostalgic memories of HBK in 1996. Thank god bret came back and ignited 3:16 and helped usher in....well you know the rest

HBK in '96 was all about the matches. Alot of quality.

I was probably a little older than you in 1996 and I HATED HBK that year. God, Vince's commentary boner for HBK was nauseating. As was all the prancing, strip teases, and obnoxious taunts. I would have been perfectly fine with Camp Cornette killing him.

But even then, at the height of my HBK hate, I'd grudgingly admit he was a hell of a wrestler. Hating HBK so much just got me invested in his matches. He'd bump and sell his ass off to the point where I'd think guys like Cassidy, Jannetty and Sincere had a legitimate shot to beat him. OK, so there was probably some wishful thinking going on too, but he was damn good at what he did. Even if he was one of the hardest top babyfaces ever to cheer for.

HBK sucked as a face, until his comeback. He was a natural prick in those days and it just shined through. People cheered when Sid Vicious beat the hell out of him.

I was 12 in 1996. HBK was my guy. Like, everything revolved around him.

I HATED him as a heel prior to his face run

He had some good face qualities, but he was far better as a heel. He out on great matches still and I liked that. I was much more about the wrestling than the promos.

96 HBK was good.

But 97 HBK was GOAT.

Pretty much. I was old enough at the time to have been not taken in by the hype. HBK had some great matches during that run, no doubt about it. His matches against Diesel and Mankind especially were very good, but it was the persona I just couldn't get behind and that matters a lot in wrestling.

It's hard today with the emphasis on in-ring skills winning out over time, but even though Hulk Hogan was no Shawn Michaels in the ring, in 1997 that didn't matter at all because Hogan's story and character was much more interesting. Hell, even Sycho Sid's was more interesting, which is why he got cheered over HBK at Survivor Series '96.

HBK got Dieseled by Vince Mcmahon. It was a HUGE fear people had when Austin was rising to the title that he would get Dieseled. Speaking of Hogan if that heel turn never got so hot who knows if Vince would ever learn NOT to change his rising heels so much into a persona that turned fans off.

I know HBK knew his persona sucked too. Just his promo the night after Survivor Series 96 said it all.
