Default Mr. Perfect/Triple H Feud in 1996

In late August 1996, Mr. Perfect starting coming down to ringside and stealing Triple H's Valet's at ringside causing him to lose matches on WWF Superstars & WWF Raw. This was leading to a feud between the two with Mr. Perfect returning to the ring in October of 1996 to face HHH on RAW. However Mr. Perfect was injured backstage, and WWF IC Champ Marc Mero took his place. Mr. Perfect then turned on Mero to lead HHH to win his first WWF Title.

Was this the plan all along? Was Perfect supposed to return and wrestle and it was changed at the last minute? Perfect then managed Triple H for 1 month before leaving out of the blue and showing up in WCW in 1997.

I wonder if Perfect would have ever come back to wrestle in WWE, either as a heel later on or turning face again and battling Triple H in 1997, if he hadn't left. Plus he was a really good commentator & manager. Why WWE didn't have him under a long term contract so WCW couldn't steal him I don't get.

I've wanted to know the answer to this too. I asked on a forum some time ago and got no replies.

My guess, not based on any evidence, is that yes Henning wanted to get back in the ring and they began the storyline. But when it came time to get official clearance from Lloyds of London insurance, they told him he would have violated the terms of his policy and not get compensated if injured. So they pulled Marc Mero into the story.

The other plot here that no one's ever explained is that Triple H was only 6 months into his year-long jobbing for the MSG incident so there's a lot of missing info here.

I'm assuming Perfect was supposed to wrestle Helmsley and put him over, but Mero took his place and lost the title making the feud nonsensical as stated with Perfect costing Helmsley matches prior to it.
