Beginning of '99.

It makes sense given that Austin had a neck injury and his knees weren't holding up the greatest. You have a young Rock waiting in the wings and was red hot himself, why wouldn't you try to push the Rock a little more than the older veteran for your future's sake?

Yes, they did. His program with Vince might've been very profitable, but his mic work and his ring work for that matter wasn't nearly as good as it used to be the year prior. Till this day I believe that Austin peaked in 1997.

Same thing happened to Rock, as soon as he got the title in mid 2000, his character started to become corny.

I don't know if it was intentional or not, but I guess he was watered down compared to 1996 / early 1997.

From a character and promo standpoint, I think Austin before he became WWF Champion was absolutely incredible. Leaps and bounds better than his face run.

Maybe it's the fact that we had a more brash and violent heel Austin going off at all times. Whether it was a crippled Pillman, Gorilla Monsoon, or random producers backstage; Austin was going to talk shit and beat their ass for the hell of it. The material was more harsh and offensive. The greater intensity made his actions look much more hellacious.

Then we got to a point where everything Austin related went through McMahon. Yeah, it was entertaining seeing McMahon get his ass kicked, but it pales in comparison because of the lack of variety.

Instead of unstable, raging Austin targeting everyone, it was over 1 year of "Screw you Austin", "Vince is a jackass", Stunner, screwjob. Both are great, but one is far superior to me.

That has got to be Kane.

I feel the EXACT same way about The Rock.

97-99 Rock > 2003 Rock >>>2000 >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> present day

Well what he was doing in 1998-99 was pretty much the common theme for wrestling during that time, even WCW in '98 resembled the Attitude Era style, mainly w/ the NWO Wolfpac.

Re: Did WWE water down Stone Cold in 98/99???

EVERYONE got corny and watered down in 2000 after Russo left. The only guy that didn't was probably Triple H.

Austin didn't get watered down in 98 and 99. I really don't see how. He did get watered down after his return in 00 and beyond though. Rock also got watered down after his title win in 00 at Backlash. He wasn't an a$$hole anymore.

He gained more catchphrases and wasn't as rabid but he still kicked anyone's ass face or heel pretty violently at any time.

'Remember that old saying? What the hell, use the bell!'

Re: Did WWE water down Stone Cold in 98/99???

I never saw Stone Cold as 'watered down', his character just evolved. He was more unhinged and unpredictable when he started out, but he eventually set his sights on the WWF Championship and ended up feuding with Vince. His character was still basically the same, just became more anti-authority because of his feud with Vince, which IMO is the GOAT feud in wrestling history. But 'watered down' is not how I would describe it. 1998 was the peak of his career and he was never more entertaining than that year.

Re: Did WWE water down Stone Cold in 98/99???

I dont think he was watered down at all. His character was consistently the same throughout. What changed was the audiences reaction to him, and that was down to the introduction of the Attitude Era concept and him feuding with Bret rather than him acting any differently. The guy was basically terrorising an old man/non wrestler who paid his wages week after week in 98/99. Its quite heelish when you really think about it. A bit like how we cheered for Val Venis when he went around screwing everyones wives for shits and giggles.
