Why did The Rock not win at WrestleMania 2000?

Title says it all - I feel like this was one of the dumbest endings to a WrestleMania. You usually work the entire year towards WrestleMania, and don't use WrestleMania as another platform to progress a feud.

You knew Foley and Show weren't going to win it, so those 2 are out of the question. I'm not questioning the 4 way, or the inclusion of all McMahons, over it being overbooked...

The Rock's momentum was perfectly built, not close to the title for the whole year while still becoming a mega star. Triple H did not need to win that match as much as The Rock. Triple H built his foundation as a heel already with his work with Foley alone during Royal Rumble and No Way Out. In addition, marrying the boss' daughter, having DX as his support - his heat was there.

The Rock needed it more than anything. Instead, they waited until Backlash to conclude the story. They could've had The Rock win and still had the same "odds are against The Rock for Backlash, still include Austin" deal.

Re: Why did The Rock not win at WrestleMania 2000?

Triple H needed the exorbitant momentum to establish himself as the first mega-heel in WWE history. It was pointless to have Foley and Show in there, but regardless of losing, the Rock would keep his momentum with the finish.

Looking back, Triple H winning at Wrestlemania XVI increased anticipation for Backlash 2000, which in turn set a non-WM PPV buyrate record with 675,000 buys.

Because the Rock doesn't play politics. He could have easily demanded the win if he wanted to.

Re: Why did The Rock not win at WrestleMania 2000?

Also, what the fuck is up with the McMahons beating the shit out of each other during the match...then Vince turns on the Rock and reunites with Shane who's ass he just kicked? Where is the sense in that?

Even if they were trying to swerve it's not like the Higher Power where at least Taker never physically harmed Vince, which resulted in Vince finally admitting in the end they were on the same page.

Just total fuckery, if anything, it made WM2000 seem like Backlash, and it made Backlash more of the WrestleMania type pay per view.

Re: Why did The Rock not win at WrestleMania 2000?

Because they wanted to turn Triple H into a mega heel and cause Austin wasn't ready medically to make the big save and help Rock from being screwed. Though, they still could've had Rock win the title at Wrestlemania and used Austin at Backlash to prevent Rock from losing his title to McMahon fuckery and probably still got at least 500,000 buys.

If Vince Russo had wrote that garbage the IWC would be talking about it till this day. But since it was the overrated hack Chris Kreski, they let it slide. One of the worst booked WrestleManias in history and without a doubt the worst booked main event EVER at wrestle mania.

Agree, show had potential but all them triple threats and four ways and the McMahon saga fucked up what should've been a great Wrestlemania. Pretty amazing considering how all the other ppvs in 2000 were pretty good.

Rock/HHH with Rock as champ and Austin involvement would've easily still gotten amazing buy rates for Backlash. It just seems that The Rock was probably the biggest self made man at that time. He was facing Mr. Ass at Summerslam, absolutely meaningless. Went on a nice losing streak, Survivor Series he was third wheel (no pun intended). Worked magic with the Rock N' Sock connection.

But it seemed that he was never provided that clean win to make him jump into megastar status, he had to do it on his own. Royal Rumble not clean, it was tainted by having his feet on the floor first. No Way Out 2000 got screwed by Shane. WM2000 he couldn't beat the McMahons and Triple H. Replace that with Austin and it would've been a clean Royal Rumble win (like Austin in 2001), and a clean WrestleMania finish with him winning the title despite all odds (Austin at WM15 and 14). Hell, even Triple H got a clean win to really cement himself by defeating Cactus Jack one-on-one, at his own game at No Way Out 2000 and at Royal Rumble 2000 even after The Rock's interference. I don't get how having that finish at WrestleMania was needed more for Triple H rather than The Rock for the aforementioned reasons. Hell, even at Backlash if it wasn't for Austin he wouldn't have won, and then Judgment Day - Taker got involved, KOTR 2000 he didn't even pin Hunter for the title, it seems The Rock never got a clean victory at a pay per view forever, until SummerSlam 2000 IIRC.

That's fucking ridiculous.

I understand where you're coming from. But, I guess Rock didn't care enough about winning matches to say something about him getting iffy match finishes. I think he knew that shit like that couldn't keep him from reaching the top of the business so it didn't matter. But, he should've had that moment at Wrestlemania. That still annoys me 14 years later.

Yeah, it was a load of BS although it made for a great ME and moment at Backlash.
