Was WrestleMania IX really that bad?

I've never seen it, but the undercard doesn't look bad at all. Is it worth a watch?

It's not as bad as some say... granted, it's not one of the best but HBK/Tatanka is a great match, Luger/Perfect is a decent match, Hart/Yokozuna/Hogan, while stupid in some ways still got the crowd pumped, and the theme of the event was just downright amazing and fun. Though, fast foward through Taker's match and thank me later on that one :p

That was the first Wrestlemania I experienced in real-time (I watched 1-8 retroactively on VHS). It was bitterly disappointing, I don't think anyone's exaggerating. Everyone was cheating left right and center. Imagine the feeling you had when Daniel Bryan was getting screwed, happening in several matches back to back. And PPVs back then would be built up months in advance (there were only 5 at that time).

It was probably worse for me because I Bret Hart is my all time favorite and it really hurt me seeing Yokozuna take the title from him.

Hearing Shawn's new entrance theme with a male vocalist instead of the female one took some getting used to. At the time I thought the song was awful.

I think also being outdoors caused unforseen issues with visual luminance/contrast, wind. But in hindsight it looked beautiful and has a unique place in history because there's never been an arena that had that look. We've had plenty of dome stadiums but not a replica Roman Empire palace.

THIS.^^^

The card it's self wasn't that bad but the booking behind it sucked. I think one of the main reasons for that being was Bret Hart not being ready to be WWF Champ yet and build up to the event proved it.

Hell Razor Ramon was more over the him and he was the heel as well so what does that tell you?

It could have been better. Shawn Michaels vs Tatanka was a decent match ruined by a weird ending. The Steiners vs Headshrinkers was really good. Mr. Perfect vs Lex Luger was a good match. Any main event with Yokozuna in was bound to be lame, though. Personally, I'd have gone for: Hogan/Yokozuna (a grudge match), Steiner Brothers/Money Inc for the tag titles, Mr. Perfect/Bret Hart for the WWF title (Perfect had a fair amount of momentum in early 1993 and could've been a great Rumble winner), Undertaker/Razor Ramon, Randy Savage/Lex Luger. With the roster they had, they could've done so much more.

Wrestlemania IX looks cool, though. It's as if they spent more time on the sets than putting a card together. Hogan winning at the end was meant to be a real happy ending but they misjudged the mood at the time, I think, as most people seemed to prefer Bret.

I like that Wrestlemania but it's probably just because of the nostalgia factor with me since I was a young kid at the time. The outdoor setting was great. Taker's entrance was amazing. Giant Gonzalez sucked but I was too young and too in awe of how big he was to care that he couldn't wrestle. Hogan was one of my childhood hero's. I loved seeing him win the title but in hindsight I can understand why many including Bret Hart felt that was the wrong move.

Shawn Michaels Vs Tatanka - **
The Steiner Brothers Vs The Head Shrinkers - ***1/2
Crush Vs Doink - 1/2*
Razor Ramon Vs Bob Backlund - DUD
Money Incorporated Vs The Mega Maniacs - DUD
Mr Perfect Vs Lex Luger - **
The Undertaker Vs The Giant Gonzalez - 3/4*
Bret Hart Vs Yokozuna - **1/2
Yokozuna Vs Hulk Hogan - DUD

Yeah a pretty damn shitty show overall, with only one match I'd ever want to sit through again. That being said, I'd have 1, 2, 4, 5, 6 and 15 below it as far as shit WM's go (11 is one spot higher on my list than 9 btw).

I don't know I know this show gets ragged on online, but I think the whole thing was booked stupid. The event really couldn't turn out to be awesome because of a few things. There was some bad booking, but not for the reasons I see in this thread. Here it is imo:

#1: YOKOZUNA IS CHASING BRET HART FOR THE WORLD TITLE
This was a mistake because it kills the fans hype over seeing a babyface chase a monster heel. Bret's first title victory should have been at WM 9, but it was corrected at WM 10. Just imagine it happening a year earlier. The problem here is that both Yokozuna and Bret didn't have enough time to be built up for fans to buy into this being a main event like Savage vs. Flair a year earlier.

I think Bret should have just faced Savage. Bret even alluded to this during the build to WM 12 with HBK that he was knocking on Savage's door the same way HBK was with him. Bret vs. Savage in a passing of the torch would work. I know some might say Hogan, but I don't think it would have worked at that time with Hogan coming back. The fans wouldn't totally buy it.

#2: Hogan's comeback is in a meaningless tag team match when it could have been against Yokozuna. I know some would say Hogan would kill Yoko's push, but in the end Yoko still went over by KOR.

#3: Tatanka and HBK was booked dumb. Tatanka should have gone over even though I did favor HBK more. Tatanka had that whole streak thing going anyways past that. If anything HBK vs. Jannetty was the match everyone wanted to see more, but it was kind of a letdown at Rumble imo.

Personal Note:
Crazy old man Backlund against Hogan would have been funny(this is something not officially a reason, but a personal one which old school fans would have loved to see. Just imagine heel Backlund calling out Hogan for ruining his sport and league that he helped build for 5 years as champion).

Yes it was but it didn't have to be because WWE had a roster with a returning Hulk Hogan, Bret Hart, Randy Savage, Shawn Michaels, The Undertaker, Scott Hall, Curt Hennig, a newly debuted Lex Luger, Money Inc, The Steiners, The Headshrinkers, Tatanka at his best, Yokozuna as hot as he'd ever be and Doink when he was very over as a heel. There was a lot of potential there but it wasn't used and WWE put together a piss poor booked PPV that was basically all set up for a swerve ending that no one wanted or cared for.

Yokozuna and Bret Hart were at the time seen by Vince McMahon as the best choices for the title feud - this all happened when the steroids trial was going. Vince needed a champion and challenger that obviously don't use steroids and he went with them.

Yokozuna was huge monster heel so it made sense that he will be after the title, while Bret was the most over babyface. Someone said early that Razor Ramon was more over Bret, but that isn't true, he was just starting to pick steam.

There were at the time much better suited competition for Bret but Vince either thought they didn't have it anymore (Macho Man) or they had health problems that would have pulled the trigger on such feud (Mr Perfect).

But the main problem was that even of Bret wasn't suited for the title yet, having Hogan just take it away in matter of seconds was plain stupid. It helped nothing, except for Vince to see that Hogan wasn't the man anymore and he had to give chance to the younger talent. So for all that it was bad, it was also the start of the change.
