I agree here because Douglas was money as a color commentator in '98 and did a great job of putting over the match and the talent involved, instead of himself, something only Cyrus was able to duplicate as a color commentator in ECW.

Again, that ties in with his strength of being a great talker.

Shane Douglas was definitely one of my most hated wrestlers as a kid. Just a straight up douchebag. Even in WWF when they gave him the lame teacher gimmick I just couldn't wait for someone to knock him out. Great talker, great heel.

Shane Douglas is basically HHH.

Good worker but overrates himself way too much. The only difference is HHH got in the Kliq and married the bosses daughter where as Douglas got buried by the Kiliq and went to ECW
I enjoyed the Triple Threat faction (moreso on the Bigelow / Candido version) and Douglas' feud with Taz was fantastic.

Its a shame about Douglas' attitude, but he's one of those guys I enjoy listening to in shoot interviews. He's a good storyteller when he's not mad.

Yeah, I wasn't aware Douglas had such heat or reputation. Glad I didn't, might've colored his performances for me. Still think he's an all time great heel. I can see why some would find his matches boring but I personally, have rarely been more captivated than I was watching his Four Corners match from Heatwave 96. Probably the most complete story I've watched told in the ring, from start to finish, by Douglas, with that great payoff where his plan comes to fruition and just as it dawns on you what it all was, he's already walking away with the gold and the girl. Or "what's left of her".

Damn what's going on in shoot interviews. Edge and Triple H got over doing watered down versions of that character (not a knock on them though) and were pretty much on the same level as him in terms of ring work, imo. If Douglas hadn't burned his bridges or whatever, I could easily see him having surpassed them both and many others. But eh, his body of work is satisfying as is.

That's the highlight of his career imo. And one of the highlights of ECW, period. It's my #4 all time ECW match.

I never thought of Edge as Douglas ripoff before. I can see it...kinda.

Triple H was a blatant Douglas ripoff. And I say that as a big HHH fan/Douglas hater. But I think HHH was much better than Douglas. Douglas had less restrictions in ECW but he never had a singles match nearly as good as HHH/Cactus, HHH/Austin or HHH/Michaels imo.

The other thing about Douglas that turned a lot of people off was the way Heyman booked as him the champion forever. 1998 Douglas was very much the same as 2003 HHH. People were more into the ECW holy trinity of Sabu, Taz and RVD, but Douglas kept the title forever. His weakass belly to belly finisher and shitty 'epics' just weren't getting it done anymore. He even kept the title for like 5 months while he was out with injury! And the way they booked it was like, "Well, Douglas is just so great that he doesn't deserve to be stripped of the title because he's just the bestest thing evar!" And it rubbed people the wrong way. Not just me. I was already a Douglas hater. But even many Douglas fans at the time thought it was getting ridiculous.

I also hated the way Douglas always shit on Ric Flair while being a low rent ripoff who wasn't fit to carry Flair's jock.

Anyway, some other good Douglas matches, if you're interested, include....

vs. Mikey- April? 1996- Good heel veteran vs. upstart babyface match. Probably the closest Douglas ever got to a "Flair match"
vs. Credible- ECW Arena April 2000- I remember this being shockingly good.
vs. Taz- Wrestlepalooza 97 is one of the most satisfying segments in ECW history.
I personally thought it was crap, but lots of people love Douglas vs. Scorpio from May? 1996.

Huge fan of Shane Douglas. He could work the mic, he had charisma, he could wrestle. He was a natural heat magnet. And he is a model of what a wrestler could be when he wasn't stuck with reading from a script.
Without a doubt Triple H's character change in 1999 to "The Game" was heavily influenced by Douglas' work.

However he had a big mouth & he was a mark for himself and that would rub people the wrong way & when he wasn't pushed, he blamed everyone else instead of realizing that his mouth kept him back.
If Douglas had been able to keep his mouth shut, he could have been one of the biggest wrestlers of the 1990s/00's.

Better gimmick? Don't know what type of gimmick he had but okay. I have no problem with criticizing Ziggler because lately, he needs to shut the hell up. But Douglas has a complete hard on for himself.

I think I remember this from '99. Is this where Douglas bled, Credible beat the shit out of him with the cane and Douglas kept asking for more?

While on that note, I honestly feel that if Douglas just dropped the belt to Bigelow '97, disappeared for a few months and came back as the same character he portrayed post-GAC '99, my views on him might change. That was the time for Douglas to switch it up and come back as the veteran who was just destroyed by Bigelow, Candido sides with Bigelow and they possibly add Lance Storm as a permanent member of the Triple Threat. A story with a now babyface Douglas returning to feud with a stable he made famous would have been great. Not to say that Taz/Douglas wasn't good as is but after the match with Bam Bam at N2R, the tank was empty and Douglas really had nothing to offer away from the microphone. He needed a break and I can remember where Heyman practically begged him to take time off but Douglas refused.

I gotta give him credit for being a tough son of a bitch.

Another match involving Douglas that I thought was okay was him & Cactus vs. Sandman & Funk, mostly for the chaos and the spot at the end where Funk brought out the branding iron.
