Junk Yard Dog, just good fun or racist?

Thinking back on it, JYD was a very racist gimmick, possibly the most racist gimmick that WWE ever had.

I mean he wore a chain around his neck... barked like he was a dog, and acted like he was a dog. I mean if someone called you a dog, it's demeaning right?

Or was it just good ole fashion family fun? And it was just mere luck that the black man was choosen to be the dog?

It was racist. Big surprise, an industry full of redneck employers is racist as fuck.

The WWF was super racist especially back then. I mean also look how they treated Tony Atlas. Saba Simba. Even Hot Rod shitted on that gimmick and this was a taped show.
I can't believe Vince even let his comments air.

It wasn't even a WWE creation.

Watts created and despite his reputation, has always been outspoken how wrestling needed more black talent on top.

Re: Junk Yard Dog, just good fun or racist?

It was a gimmick that made sense at the time. Thousands of African Americans turned out to watch the Dog, they loved him...so did everybody else. One of the first black men to be booked as the top guy in a promotion.

What the hell does any of those have to do with a black man in the south with a dog collar around his neck, jookin & jivin?

I can understand those that think the gimmick was racist (although I don't) but I don't see how JYD's gimmick is even slightly comparable to Piper's or Finlay's, if you're connection is racism.

It would be really fucking awesome if people would educate themselves on the difference between racism and stereotypes. Just wow.

Re: Junk Yard Dog, just good fun or racist?

It was racist, but JYD was a good dude and had charisma so he was able to use empowerment and turn a negative gimmick into a positive one.
