Default THE WAY IT WAS: BUDDY ROGERS vs. JOHNNY VALENTINE

Highlights of a pretty good bout from the GOLDEN AGE OF WRESTLING. Just ignore the idiot announcer who mistakenly says Johnny Valentino throughout the match and describes a Rogers' piledriver as a "head butt."

NATURE BOY BUDDY ROGERS vs. JOHNNY VALENTINE circa 1953

Default Re: THE WAY IT WAS: BUDDY ROGERS vs. JOHNNY VALENTINE

This is the first time I've seen Johnny Valentine wrestle (crazy when I think in regards to how I've met his son seeing this also) ... however I do see quite a bit of Greg within him as it goes.

How old was Buddy Rogers here? He looks quite old but he's got so much energy and can move so well in the ring, they really did make wrestling look real back then, those body slams for example, I don't think many people would have questioned it, as they do now. (I know they know now but you know what I mean)

The commentary was awful though, not just the headbutt thing for the piledriver ... but he just sounded really dull, 'Sounds fun, nature boy is the blonde wrestler by the way', 'Some wrestlers say his blondness is more by design than by nature' ... it sounded like a narrator from a children's show or something .... where are Bill & Ben???? lol

That aside, those guys put on a great match there!!!!

I agree with you that the commentary was simply awful! Compared to today's slick commentary and announcing it is a joke. Compared to just about anything it's a joke!

I made a notation "circa 1953," because that is what it said on the Youtube site. However, I have a feeling it was a bit later. Valentine didn't make the complete conversion from heel to face until after I started watching in the late 1950s and I remember watching him as Buddy's tag team partner. On the other hand, who knows what Kayfabe story line was going on at the time.

In any case, I'd say Buddy was no older than 35 in this match. His severely cauliflowered ears and battered face made him look older than his years. And, don't forget these guys were constantly traveling by car to bookings all over the country. That kind of stress ages you.

Buddy always put on a great show. There is no question that Rocca was the high flyer of that era. However, Rogers was one of the first to get away from the grunt and groan on the mat style of wrestling and use the flying scissors and other aerial moves.

I'm glad you enjoyed the video clip!

Yeah it was good! Commentary for me was also so great when people such as Gorilla, Heenan, Vince, Ventura were all on there ... those guys were awesome, I put a thread on here about the whole commentary thing with a little clip in, check out the commentary on the clip here : http://www.wrestlingforum.com/genera...ly-should.html

Yeah, the commentary reminded me of a narrator from an old childrens TV show or something lol, but yeah, the match was good, it was very grappling, hard hitting, edgy if you know what I mean, it actually looked like those guys were taking some serious bumps, I thought Buddy was way older than that on the clip, definitely, bare in mind though the footage isn't exactly the clearest (obviously) but he had quite a lot of agility too didn't he and he was pretty diverse in the ring, he strikes me as quite the grappler/mat technician but with an element or aerial manoeuvres added there, was he quite a submission style wrestler too?

The commentator for that match was Marty Glickman

I'm thinking that the match was not televised and the commentary was made for a newsreel type thing that they used to show in the movie theaters and sometimes on TV when I was a kid.

If you notice, Glickman is calling the shots before they actually happen. So, unless he got a copy of the script in advance I'm thinking that his commentary was after the fact for mostly a non-wrestling fan audience.

I came back as a full time fan around 1998/1999 to around 2005. I LOVED the WWF then - Stone Cold, Undertaker, Kane, Mick Foley, etc., etc. I went to way more live shows including Smackdowns, Raws, WWF House Shows, WCW NITRO, Indy matches, with my son than I ever attended as a kid back in the day. It was GREAT!

However, the truth be told, nothing can compare to the Golden Age of Wrestling which I consider lasted from 1950 to around 1965, despite what Wikipedia might say. It was just something indescribable that these video clips can only convey partially.

I remember when I showed my son a video of the Rogers-O'Connor record breaking NWA World Championship match in Comiskey Park. Being brought up on WWF and WCW I didn't think he would like it. However, he sat through the entire 30+ minute match without taking his eyes off the screen. When it was over he commented, "Pop, so some of the matches were for real back in your day." I think that says it!

I've seen a couple of rogers matches and they're actually really good.

this match with valentine is before he perfected his gimmick as the no bump taking destroyer.
