I think it's a defendable decision. Piper rightfully got a clean win, but it was too early for Hogan to drop the belt. You can't play hot potato with the belt w/o losing prestige on the next person's win.

The WCW title changed hands 6 times from October 95- August 96 (when Hogan won it as a heel)....so had Hogan dropped it to Piper that would have been a four month title reign.....who ended Hogan's first WCW title reign as a heel? Lex Luger. Who dropped it back to Hogan 5 days later.

So if someone wins the title at Royal Rumble should they NOT defend it at Mania?

WCW was crap between Oct 95 and Aug 96.

Luger didn't win the belt til Aug 4th 1997. At that point Hogan's heel turn isn't fresh anymore and you can subject to a little hot potato f*ckery.

I think what it boils down to is you don't have week long WrestleMania championship runs. If Piper wins he needs a legitimate run but that wasn't in the cards. Hogan was the rightful champ at that stage of NWO.

I'm sure Hogan would have politicked for his match to go on last and then further used his "send the fans home happy" argument to get out of jobbing. If that's the case that you want the fans to go home happy then Hart-Savage would have been the better main event. They would have put on a great match then a handshake or other show of respect between the two.
Yeah that scenario would have been great, but no way is Hogan returning to job after a year.

We got to remember the last time fans saw Hogan at Mania he couldn't even pin Sid lol. Savage trying to regain the title against Hart works great though.

Not sure if this was mentioned (didnt feel like reading the entire thing) but Disco Inferno was using the stunner, he called it the chart buster, as a finishing move. He suddenly had to stop because Ed Leslie (Brutus the Barber Beefcake) needed a finishing move and Hogan basically took it from him lol.

We could create a whole separate thread on guys Hogan kept around or made much bigger than they needed to be and #1 on that list would be Ed Leslie. He kept getting chance after chance at characters because he was Hogan's boy.

Vince had big plans for Sid after WrestleMania VIII otherwise Sid would've done the job.

I still call bullshit.

Sid quit, not because of politics but because he didn't want to put Warrior over. And LOL @ Hogan not wanting to pass the torch to Vince's next planned golden boy, who had just failed a drug test and was facing a 6 week suspension but instead, quit because he didn't want to put Warrior over.

Obviously Vince had big plans for Sid after WM 8. His next program was with Warrior.

All I wanna know is where you're getting this Sid vs. Warrior plan from. I'm about to download Sid's shoot interview, watch it and tell you word for word everything he said about that situation and unless you're getting the story from someone more credible than the actual participant, I call bullshit.

Yeah some things in this thread is scratching my head and some of it is revisionist history. As you said Sid quit and it had nothing to do with Hogan.

The WWF was in serious bad PR at the time and weren't taking any chances thus Sid's suspension.

Look how small both Hogan and Warrior looked and to some seeing The Road Warriors return at Mania 8 too was surprising.

Sports Illustrated around the time did an article about muscle guys who were huge getting pushed over more talented guys like Flair. There was many reasons why the title scene went the way it did in early '92 as well as the rise of guys like Bret Hart.

The same with all the "creative control" stuff being thrown at Hogan in the 80's when business wise it's obvious why certain things went the way it did.
