Vince screwed up WrestleMania 8

I know Hogan's future in the company was uncertain at the time. But if you put yourself in Vince's position for WM8: you have Hulk Hogan, the biggest draw in the history of pro wrestling. You have Ric Flair, arguably at the time the second biggest draw, for sure a guy who propped Jim Crockett promotions on his back and managed to fill arenas, and year in and year out having awesome matches with whoever was in the ring with him.

In this scenario I have 2 Questions. First, how does Ric Flair not wrestle Hulk Hogan for the WWF world title in the main event. Second, if you've already got your mind made up that you will let this HUGE main event slip through your fingers, why does Hogan wrestle a very green Sid Justice in the main event?

Savage and Flair had a great match with an even better story. I had heard rumors that Flair was supposed to retain the title, and so Vince did not want to send the fans home disappointed after a heel retains the title. But once you've decided to put the title on Savage, why is that not the last match? Let Hogan and Sid stink up the joint midway through the event and then hae Flair and Savage tear the house down for the last match.

Re: Vince screwed up Wrestlemaina 8

Apparently, they tried by having Flair/Hogan matches at house shows, prior to WM8. The reason they gave is that Flair and Hogan didn't have great chemistry in the ring.

I find that interesting because a couple of weeks ago on WWE Classics on Demand, they had a Flair/Hogan house show match at MSG, a few months prior to WM 8, and the match wasn't bad at all. The fans were very much into the match. I think that's an excuse they give, but the real reason is someone didn't want to do the JOB.

Yeah, that seems like total bullshit when you look into it. No chemistry, yet Hogan and Sid wasn't expected to be good by any means, and really wasn't. Since when does the match quality matter when it's a dream match that'll sell tickets? By Vince standards at least. There's gotta be more to the story.

At least we got Sid's series of GOAT promos.

Yep. And the match wasn't bad at all. I was expecting something below average, but it was actually a pretty good match. The MSG crowd was very much into it from beginning to end. Very odd stuff.

Vince didn't screw Wrestlemania 8, Wrestlemania 8 screwed Wrestlemania 8.

Sorry, couldn't resist. I think there have been some reports about Hogan pulling strings to avoid facing Flair despite him being booked to win the title. Dunno why, though.

Re: Vince screwed up Wrestlemaina 8

Vince and Hogan mutually agreed to separate due to the steroid scandal not long before the show.

So what do you do? Hogan can't leave with the belt and Hogan isn't lying down in a match promoted as his send-off. It was a no-win.

My one regret is not watching enough television.

It's all about brand protection. Flair didn't wanna lose to Hogan and vice versa. In the end, that's what it was about.

Re: Vince screwed up Wrestlemaina 8

Flair wound up jobbing to Savage at WM8 though. Not sure why he wouldn't job to Hogan unless they just didn't get along back then. Flair also agreed to job a bunch of times to Hogan when Hogan went to WCW.

I really don't get why the match didn't happen. I think it could have if the WWE creative people and/or Vince pushed hard enough for it. I'm not sure it was for the worst though or that they screwed it up. Hogan vs Flair is certainly a bigger match but it almost certainly wouldn't have been the classic that Savage vs. Flair was. I think it worked out okay.

Re: Vince screwed up Wrestlemaina 8

I'm a big fan of WrestleMania 8 and how it turned out. Hogan/Flair should have headlined it, with all the cards being in place, but I can see the reasons why they didn't do it. Hogan was leaving, so he couldn't have won (lest another title vacancy just after the last time he vacated it) and everything was building to Flair losing the belt to a major babyface at the event, and Savage was due for another run especially with Warrior out.

Still, the shake-up in the card was for the best as it led to a great SummerSlam '92, an energetic Warrior return, two great matches (Piper/Hart and Flair/Savage), and also the return of LOD after a brief absence. By the end of the year, the WWF would look completely different.
