PLEASE just read the article I posted, or at least the title. It says that YOUR president, the head of YOUR country, wants immigrants to assimilate, which means to CONFORM, by learning ENGLISH, which shouldn't be a requirement because you yourself admit that you have NO official language.

And I already addressed that with the EDIT in my last post.

Well, I would say that there is pressure for immigrants in our culture to adapt to what the majority of society would consider to be the norm, but it's not completely enforced.
I've worked with the public, and there are plenty of immigrants who do not speak english, but often if they have younger children those children will be bilingual and have to handle situations in which english is a preferred language.

Edit: Yeah, Bush is an idiot that way *wanting a national language*. Bush speaks for about 30 percent of Americans though.
I don't mind the immigration rules he proposes to a certain extent. I tend to lean towards the Clinton version of it though.

The language issue is just an overt example of what we've been trying to say all along. The other pressures exist it's just harder for you to see because you are socialized to do it automatically, as a function of society.

This is very true. All I'm trying to say is that all the pressures of conformity do exist and are very strong within American culture (relative to other nations such as Canada which focus on a Cultural Mosaic Ideal). And I thank you for actually having a rational comment in your post, something your countrymate has yet to achieve.

But there's no laws forcing anyone to do away with their culture which is my point. You're going to have pressures to not conform but to a much lesser extent, "fit in" with those around you no matter what country you go to. Canada is no different in that aspect. But there's not going to be any laws forcing anyone to do away with their culture and live one certain way of life like TREMBLAYinc was saying. It's simply untrue.

he NEVER said that there were laws. He said people were pushed toward conformity. Don't make up counterpoints to argue, it just further degrades your own argument.

When did I say anything about laws forcing people to conform? I was mentioning something about the American melting pot and how the mosaic of Canada is better.
On the topic of laws, however, here in Canada we have laws that protect people and their cultural distinctness.

Re: I've never hated a presidential candidate more than.....
It's true he didn't mention laws, but he said that Americans expect people to conform to one way of life. And that's simply untrue.
Do some people expect it? Sure, some idiots do. But that's true in every country.
