Default WWF 1993: "How do you follow THAT WrestleMania?"

World Wrestling Federation
April 1993

With WrestleMania 9 complete, the World Wrestling Federation moves on with a new WWF Champion and with a new PPV on the horizon in the King of the Ring. With the “Steroids Scandal” hanging over Vince McMahon and the WWF, the company is in a transitional phase as it looks to trim budgets and focus on the younger talent such as The Undertaker, Mr. Perfect and Bret “The Hitman” Hart rather than the likes of Ric Flair, “Macho Man” Randy Savage and Ultimate Warrior. However, hindsight tells us, that the extravaganza that was WrestleMania 9 was not well received and came off more as a damp squib. One particular bone of contention surrounded the finish as, despite the focus on the younger stars, Hulkamania yet again ruled the WWF as Hulk Hogan returned to defeat Yokozuna after the Japanese Royal Rumble winner had defeated Bret Hart just minutes earlier. Another issue for many fans was the number of DQ or controversial finishes that left so many feuds unfinished. So what next for the WWF in 1993?

The week after WrestleMania 9, WWF aired some recorded shows that didn’t advance any storylines. My first RAW is the show 8 days on from WrestleMania when all the superstars who wrestled in Las Vegas were ready to appear on TV once again.

Quote:
WORLD WRESTLING FEDERATION NEWS AND GOSSIP!
  • RAW EXTENDED TO HOUR AND A HALF: From now on, Monday Night RAW, the WWF’s flagship show, will air for 90 minutes instead of the previous 60 minute show with run-off. Although this is only expected to increase the show by 15-20 minutes, the popularity of the show so far means that RAW now has longer to showcase some of the talent on offer in the WWF. 90 minute RAW’s will begin airing from Monday April 19.

  • MIXED RESPONSE TO NEW WWF CHAMPION: The reaction to the crowning of Hulk Hogan as the WWF Champion has been mixed to say the least. Many believe that this change of plan, thought to have only come about in the week running up to WrestleMania 9, was down to backstage politics from Hogan himself. Rumours suggest that Hogan will be cutting short his tour of Japan to appear more frequently on RAW than was planned before.

  • NEW PPV PLANNED FOR JUNE; TO BE HELD IN DAYTON, OHIO: A new PPV is scheduled for Sunday June 13, 10 weeks from WrestleMania 9, to fill the long gap between PPV’s until Summerslam. Word is that there could be a special tournament gimmick for the show although there is no concrete word on what is planned right now. WWF insiders have said to expect Hulk Hogan to be defending the WWF Championship at the PPV.

  • MACHO MAN SET FOR RETURN TO IN-RING ACTION: Despite impressing many on commentary, “Macho Man” Randy Savage is said to be ready for a return to the squared circle in the coming weeks. No word yet on who he will feud with on his return but expect him to return to a top-end feud of some kind.

  • NEW CHAMPIONSHIP BEING DISCUSSED BY WWF OFFICIALS: With the WWF continuing to increase in size, there are rumours coming out of the WWF that there could be a third singles championship introduced in the coming months. Again, there is no concrete word on the situation but rumours suggest it would be a title beneath the Intercontinental Championship currently held by Shawn Michaels.
Enjoy the show! GCB

OK, here is my first 1993 show. I'm not certain about the formatting yet, might change it later, but the detail is as detailed as I want to do. I'll use full detail for PPV action but not for TV otherwise the BTB will grind to a halt. GCB

MONDAY NIGHT RAW
Manhattan Center, NY | Monday April 12, 1993

RAW starts with Vince McMahon and “Macho Man” Randy Savage stood beside the ring excitedly discussing the events of the past Sunday at WrestleMania in Las Vegas. As the sirens blare around the Manhattan Center and the RAW girl welcomes us to New York, McMahon announces that tonight, live in New York, the Intercontinental Champion Shawn Michaels would be facing the man who he had a backstage brawl with at WrestleMania 9, Mr. Perfect! McMahon and Savage discuss the spectacle that was WrestleMania 9 and McMahon describes it as the greatest WrestleMania of all time – an arguable point – before adding that we have a new World Wrestling Federation Champion and his name is Hulk Hogan! Savage takes it on and tells the story of how Yokozuna defeated Bret Hart initially before challenging Hogan right there and then. Savage looks delighted as he announces that Hogan got the job done and took back that WWF Championship. Vince McMahon tells us that there was a huge amount of controversy though – Yokozuna and Mr. Fuji are reportedly very unhappy with what happened and are intending to address the situation very soon.
“SEXY BOY”
Shawn Michaels
Intercontinental Champion

San Antonio, Texas
And here comes the WWF Intercontinental Champion to the delight of a few ladies in the crowd but to heat from the rest of the RAW crowd here in Manhattan. Michaels looks cocky and sure of himself as usual as he struts towards the ring with the glittering belt around his waist but McMahon reminds us that the champion did not have the best of times at WrestleMania 9! As is pointed out, Michaels was lucky to retain his title in the opening match against Tatanka when he was forced to deliberately get himself DQ’d before he got involved in difficulties later in the night with the man he faces tonight, Mr. Perfect.
“PERFECTION”
Mr. Perfect
Robbinsdale, Minnesota
As Perfect, carrying a white towel, heads out towards the ring, he receives a big pop from the crowd here in New York. A smile spreads across his face as he eyes Michaels in the ring who is stood mouthing off at him; their troubles that began at WrestleMania are clearly a sore issue for the pair of them as they exchange words over the ropes. Perfect steps up the ringsteps and takes a threatening step towards Michaels but the referee gets between them and holds things up. Michaels removes his entrance gear and we head into a commercial as preparations for the match continue …

<<< COMMERCIAL BREAK >>>

RAW returns with the first match of the evening underway as Vince McMahon points out that Luna Vachon has arrived at ringside once more for a Shawn Michaels encounter …
MATCH 1
Mr. Perfect vs. Shawn Michaels (w/Luna Vachon?)

As you would expect from these two men, a fast paced and intriguing opening match of the evening full of close calls. With the problems between the pair of them clear, Perfect and Michaels go at it with little regard for the referee’s instructions at times and both men come close to a DQ during the match. With Luna pacing on the outside, she doesn’t appear to be in Michaels’ corner but clearly has some kind of vested interest in him, once again, here tonight. As RAW heads into another commercial, Michaels has control over the contest after he hits a couple of big moves on the outside of the ring including a slam on the floor.
<<< COMMERCIAL BREAK >>>

However, when RAW returns, Perfect is fighting back and he comes close on two occasions to getting the win, once with a German suplex and then with a missile dropkick but Michaels kicks out just in time. With Perfect on a roll though, the crowd are now on their feet and cheering him on towards a win and Perfect shouts out that it is time for the Perfectplex. He hooks Michaels up and sets himself but then suddenly releases it and Michaels rolls away – “NARCISSIST” LEX LUGER IS HERE! Perfect ducks as Luger swings his forearm towards him before leaping over him as he comes off the ropes. A standing dropkick from Perfect staggers Luger back but Michaels now takes advantage of the distraction and clubs Perfect across the back over and over. As Perfect drops to his knees, Luger joins Michaels and begins stomping away at his body and the referee signals for the bell.
WINNER:
Mr. Perfect (DQ) (8:34)

The beating of Perfect continues to the dismay of the crowd as Luger and Michaels stomp and kick at the former Intercontinental Champion. Michaels eventually ushers Luger back as Perfect staggers up … SUPERKICK! Boos echo around the arena and now Luger pulls his arm pad down and starts to point and signal towards his highly suspicious forearm that has knocked superstars cold of late on more than one occasion including Perfect and former WWF Champion, Bret Hart. But before he can strike Perfect again, the crowd go wild as Tatanka comes flying out from backstage and towards the ring. As he climbs to the apron, Luna Vachon rushes behind him and digs her nails into Tatanka’s back and tries to prevent him from entering the ring. However, almost immediately, Sensational Sherri also appears and she is intent on revenge on Luna Vachon after her attack on her at WrestleMania 9. Tatanka, now free from Luna, enters the ring and barrages into Michaels and then Luger as he makes the save for Perfect, the Native American clotheslines Michaels over the top rope before Perfect, sneaking behind Luger, hits a Perfectplex. Ringside, Sherri is pounding Luna and she decides to disappear with Sherri hot on her heels. As Michaels, with the title belt back in his hand, and Luger back away, Perfect thanks Tatanka and they raise their hands; the announcement is made that Perfect won the match via DQ but it is clear that things are far from over between these four men.

<<< COMMERCIAL BREAK >>>

“HEADSHRINKER”
The Headshrinkers (w/Afa)
Samoa
Defeated by the Steiner Brothers at WrestleMania 9, Afa leads Fatu and Samu towards the ring and they are looking in a menacing mood here. As they prepare in the ring by removing their Samoan dress, their partner for this opening match also heads out into the arena …
“BAM! BAM!”
Bam Bam Bigelow
Asbury Park, New Jersey
His head covered in tattoos, out steps the “Beast from the East” and makes his way down the short aisle towards the ring where he joins the Headshrinkers. All three men in the ring are receiving poor reactions from the crowd, they are not well liked here in New York – not that they care at all.
“HIGH ENERGY”
Koko B. Ware & “The Rocket” Owen Hart
A good reception for the pair known as “High Energy” as they head out slapping hands with the fans at ringside. Vince McMahon suggests that they are one of the most exciting young teams in the WWF and that a win over the Headshrinkers and Bam Bam Bigelow tonight would send their stock rising high in the Tag Team division. This prompts Macho Man to remind us that Money Inc. are still the Tag Team Champions after WrestleMania 9 and the world is desperate to see somebody defeat them and take their titles – he says he hopes High Energy can do just that!
“BARBER SHOP”
Brutus “The Barber” Beefcake (w/Jimmy Hart)
San Francisco, California
Waving his barber’s shears in the air, Brutus Beefcake steps out to a great pop and makes his way quickly towards the ring. Followed by the man with the megaphone, Jimmy Hart, he leaps into the ring and joins his partners for tonight as Vince McMahon reminds us that his previous partner, Hulk Hogan, now has other commitments due to being the WWF Champion. Savage says that he has heard that Beefcake is on the hunt for a new partner and he still wants revenge on Money Inc. for their actions in the past couple of months.
MATCH 2: 6 MAN TAG TEAM MATCH
Bam Bam Bigelow & The Headshrinkers (w/Afa) vs. Brutus “The Barber” Beefcake & High Energy (w/Jimmy Hart)

The size of Bigelow and the power of the Headshrinkers mean that they dominate this match for long periods of time. However, High Energy are able to use the speed to avoid several big moves and Beefcake is able to take advantage as he grounds Bigelow. Bigelow tries to hit a Diving Headbutt on Beefcake but his protective mask sees the New Jersey behemoth roll away clutching his head in pain instead. Predictably, Samu and Fatu try to headbutt Beefcake with the mask as well but it fails to damage him and he is able to hit a running powerslam that almost secures the win. However, in the end, Koko B. Ware proves to be the weak link as the Birdman is caught coming off the top rope by Bigelow. He slams him down on the mat hard and heads for the top rope again … DIVING HEADBUTT! The Headshrinkers knock Owen Hart and Brutus Beefcake off the mat as Bigelow makes the pinfall. 123!
WINNERS:
Bam Bam Bigelow & The Headshrinkers (06:32)

<<< COMMERCIAL BREAK >>>

As RAW returns, Vince McMahon introduces an highlights video of WrestleMania 9 now that all the encore presentations have aired on TV.

Once the replay video ends, we see that the ring is set up for the “King’s Court” segment; on cue, here comes the host of the show himself.
“THE GREAT GATES OF KIEV”
Jerry “The King” Lawler
Memphis, Tennessee
Microphone in hand and crown sat atop his head, the crowd instantly react negatively and give Lawler grief as he approaches the ring. He can be seen interacting with the fans and insulting them, he even threatens one fan before stepping into the ring. As the music fades, Lawler begins by telling the Manhattan Center that he is sick of hearing about WrestleMania 9 – after all, he was not featured on the show. However, there is one thing he wishes to speak about and that is why his guest tonight is here. Lawler asks the people to welcome to the King’s Court: Bob Backlund.
Bob Backlund
Princeton, Minnesota
Jogging out with his wrestling gear and a sports jacket on, Backlund gets into the ring and stands facing Lawler. The King begins to run his mouth and he insults Backlund’s appearance and his lack of entrance music before he gets to the real reason he wanted to invite Backlund out here tonight – his WrestleMania 9 defeat to Razor Ramon. King tells Backlund that he was not just beaten by the “Bad Guy” in Las Vegas, he was out-fought, out-smarted and out-wrestled. Backlund looks annoyed with Lawler but he has yet to be asked a question; Lawler is not letting the microphone get near his guest tonight. As the insult and mockery continue, Backlund looks angered as Lawler laughs at his dream of one day becoming the WWF Champion again. Backlund is now trying to speak but Lawler refuses to allow the microphone near him and when Backlund tries to take the microphone, Lawler aggressively rips it away from him. Lawler once more laughs at Backlund before telling him outright that it is time for him to retire. Lawler asks the crowd what they think and they react by telling him that Backlund should not retire before taunting Lawler with a “Burger King” chant as well. As Lawler reacts badly to the chant, Backlund takes his chance … CROSS FACE CHICKEN WING! The crowd are delighted to see Lawler getting his comeuppance here and he frantically taps out but Backlund refuses to release the hold. However, there is a commotion off camera and then we suddenly see that somebody is here to rescue King … DOINK THE CLOWN!

Doink crashes into Backlund with a blind side shot before stomping and punching at him. Lawler, hurt from the Chicken Wing hold, rolls out of the ring and clutches his arm in pain as he watches Doink hurt Backlund in return. However, Backlund begins to fight back and Doink decides to exit the ring where he joins Lawler in the entrance aisle. They back away pointing fingers back at Bob Backlund who wants them to return to the ring – but they refuse.

<<< COMMERCIAL BREAK >>>

Virgil
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
As RAW returns once more with another RAW girl dressed in a black leotard, Vince McMahon excitedly points out the appearance of Virgil in the ring and he looks to be ready for action here tonight. As he throws out some punches though in warm up, Randy Savage says that tonight he is worried for Virgil’s health – just as his opponent steps out into the Manhattan Center.
“DESTRUCTION”
Giant Gonzalez (w/Harvey Wippelman)
Argentina
A hush falls over the arena as the barely 5 foot Harvey Wippelman leads out the almost 8 foot Giant Gonzalez who is dressed in his usual attire of a flesh coloured body suit. Wippelman looks annoyed as he approaches the ring and shakes his head at the reaction that Gonzalez is receiving from some fans. However, the Giant is not intimidated one bit and he snarls at the crowd before stepping up the ring steps and easily over the top rope. King Kong like, Gonzalez beats his chest as he stands in the corner and the boos echo around the arena as Vince McMahon reminds us of the problems between this man and the Undertaker at WrestleMania 9. McMahon and Savage castigate the use of the chloroform by Gonzalez but are seemingly in awe at the size of the man in the ring; how can Virgil survive here tonight?
MATCH 3
Giant Gonzalez (w/Harvey Wippelman) vs. Virgil

Answer? He doesn’t! As soon as the bell rings, Virgil rushes bravely towards the 8 foot monster but his attack makes little impact as Gonzalez grabs him by the throat and lifts him high with two hands – before dropping him down hard on his back. Wippelman demands that Gonzalez punish Virgil and he dominates him for the next couple of minutes treating him like a rag doll. Although it takes 3 minutes officially, the match is over after 30 seconds but Wippelman insists on the Giant lifting Virgil off the mat and destroying him further every time he contemplates a pinfall. In the end, Gonzalez drags a lifeless Virgil off the mat … CHOKE SLAM! This one is now over as Gonzalez places a foot on the chest of Virgil and roars … 123!
WINNER:
Giant Gonzalez (02:57)

As soon as the bell rings, Wippelman enters the ring and orders the referee not to raise the arm of his man. The referee, wisely, heeds the advice and exits the ring with Gonzalez looking ready to hurt somebody else here. Wippelman demands that Howard Finkel hand him the microphone and then Harvey announces the winner of the match, the most dominant entity here in the World Wrestling Federation, the Giant Gonzalez. Wippelman tells the crowd watching that Gonzalez is ready to destroy everything in his path here in the WWF and says that he will not rest until he has left a trail of destruction in his wake. Harvey moves on to complain about the way in which Gonzalez was treated at WrestleMania – he says that the result of the match was unimportant and that destroying the Undertaker was all they were concerned with in Las Vegas. He goes on to criticise how armed guards were used to prevent Gonzalez re-entering the ring and squashing Undertaker and says that that proves that the WWF is frightened to death of the power and destructive capabilities his man has. Wippelman demands that Jack Tunney make a personal apology to the Giant Gonzalez for his treatment at WrestleMania 9 – if he does, then he will restrain and control Gonzalez sometimes. However, if there is no apology then he will be letting Gonzalez run amok and nobody in the WWF will be safe.

<<< COMMERCIAL BREAK >>>

“BAD BOY”
Razor Ramon
Miami, Florida
Gold chains hanging around his neck, the greasy haired “Bad Guy” saunters out into the arena as RAW returns. Toothpick in between his teeth, Ramon slowly makes his way towards the ring, stopping partway to badmouth a couple of fans, before entering the ring. McMahon “hypes” up Ramon and points out that at WrestleMania 9, the “Bad Guy” defeated one of the most respected veterans here in the WWF when he surprised Bob Backlund with a roll up pin. Savage says that he has no doubt that Ramon is one of the best technical wrestlers in the WWF right now but his attitude just sickens him.
“TWO BY FOUR”
“Hacksaw” Jim Duggan
Glen Falls, New York
Waving the red, white and blue of Old Glory, Jim Duggan strides out into the arena to a huge pop. Looking ready for action here tonight, Duggan quickly enters the ring and begins waving the US flag over his head whilst giving the fans in New York the thumbs up salute that he has become well known for. Razor looks unimpressed by this as he stands in the corner but Vince McMahon describes Duggan as a national icon and says that he will show Razor Ramon tonight that the “Bad Guy” cannot win here in the United States of America! Flags and chains are handed over to people outside the ring and the bell rings on the final match of the evening here on RAW.
MATCH 4
“Hacksaw” Jim Duggan vs. Razor Ramon

A really competitive match as Razor Ramon uses his technique and cunning to try and outwit the power and strength of the proud American, Jim Duggan. The crowd are firmly in the corner of Duggan, as are McMahon and Savage on commentary, and they give him much backing from the outset as he fights back against Ramon. Caught off guard by a toothpick to the face early on, Duggan is slowed down and Razor controls the action for long periods with Duggan fighting back momentarily before being held up once more. However, the crowd are waiting for the moment when Duggan launches the big comeback to end Ramon’s hopes and when he counters with a powerslam, things look to be going his way. Duggan sets himself into a three-point stance and then almost takes off Razor’s head with a heavy hitting clothesline before he hits the ropes to hit Old Glory, the running knee drop … However, Razor avoids it but bundles into the referee who falls over by accident. Duggan checks on the official and this gives Ramon time to grab the Old Glory flag of Duggan. When “Hacksaw” turns round, the flagpole is jammed into his gut out of the referee’s view and then thrown outside the ring to the dismay of the crowd. Razor locks Duggan up for a belly to back suplex before hooking the leg … 123!
WINNER:
Razor Ramon (8:04)

The crowd are unhappy over the finish to what had been a good contest but Razor Ramon does not give a damn about that. He taunts the crowd from the centre of the ring and Vince McMahon admits that Razor is on a roll here in the WWF despite the controversial tactics used right there. However, Razor has no intention of hanging around as he sees an intense and angry Jim Duggan recovering outside the ring. As Duggan gets back into the ring, Ramon exits and laughs as he makes his way down the aisle.

<<< COMMERCIAL BREAK >>>

RAW returns with Vince McMahon and Randy Savage on the commentary table and McMahon announces that live on the phone right now they have the new WWF Champion, Hulk Hogan! McMahon asks him about his plans now that he is the WWF Champion and Hogan replies that he is intending to be on Monday Night RAW next week to celebrate with all his Hulkamaniacs! McMahon and Savage tell Hogan that they are looking forward to that as Hogan hangs up but they are then joined by an unwanted guest – Bobby “The Brain” Heenan. He is unhappy over the way Tatanka helped Mr. Perfect here tonight and he accuses Perfect of being a coward. Heenan says that Perfect has issues with both Shawn Michaels and Lex Luger and if he cannot cope with both of them, he should have been more careful who he upset rather than rely on the Native American to help him out. Vince McMahon and Randy Savage cannot believe what they are hearing but Heenan tells them to be quiet because he has a major announcement; NEXT WEEK ON RAW, MR. PERFECT AND TATANKA WILL TEAM UP TO FACE LEX LUGER AND SHAWN MICHAELS IN A TAG TEAM MATCH! Big news for sure and McMahon and Savage seem happy with it. However, Heenan continues to insult Perfect and says he will be destroyed next week.
“PERFECTION”
Mr. Perfect
Robbinsdale, Minnesota
As Perfect walks out to a great reaction, Heenan decides to exit and he leaps the fence and heads for the exit. Perfect smirks in the aisle as he watches Heenan run away before saluting the fans as RAW ends here tonight in New York.

Quote:

**************************************************

RESULTS FROM “HOUSE” SHOW MAIN EVENTS SHOWN ON OTHER TV

WWF MANIA
BARRY HOROWITZ vs. BRET “THE HITMAN” HART
In his first appearance since losing the WWF Championship in Las Vegas at WrestleMania 9, Bret Hart returns to the ring and faces off against the disliked Barry Horowitz. After an even start to the match, Hart gets into his flow and uses his trusted Sharpshooter to get the important submission victory and get himself back on track as he looks to regain the WWF Championship.
WINNER: Bret “The Hitman” Hart

ALL AMERICAN WRESTLING
FRIAR FERGUSON vs. YOKOZUNA (w/Mr. Fuji)
Clearly annoyed with what went down at WrestleMania 9, Yokozuna is absolutely ruthless as he faces Friar Ferguson on All American Wrestling. Despite a brave fight from Ferguson, he is unable to stand the power and force of the Sumo Wrestler and is taken down easily in the end. A BANZAI DROP ends the contest and Yokozuna sits atop of Ferguson for the 123.
WINNER: Yokozuna

After the match, Fuji grabs the microphone and announces to the crowd that they will be appearing on RAW this Monday night to confront the WWF Champion, Hulk Hogan. Who knows what they have in mind as they head for New York City next week?

WRESTLING CHALLENGE
KAMALA (w/Slick) vs. “THE MODEL” RICK MARTELL
As his efforts to humanise Kamala continue, Slick again has problems with Kamala’s understanding of basic wrestling here tonight. Facing his most difficult challenge for a while in Rick Martell, the Ugandan Giant appears to have the match won several times but, in true WWF slapstick fashion, he makes the pinfalls wrong and Slick, along with the vocal crowd, try to make Kamala understand how to do it right. In the end, Kamala hits a big belly to belly suplex and follows it up with a diving splash to get the 123.
WINNER: Kamala

WWF SUPERSTARS
THE UNDERTAKER (w/Paul Bearer) vs. LOCAL WRESTLER
As usual in these types of matches, The Undertaker dominates from the start to the finish with a tiny bit of retaliation halfway through the match. When Taker hits the TOMBSTONE PILEDRIVER, the match is over and he gets the 123 for an easy win.
WINNER: The Undertaker

The interesting part of the action comes after the main event though after Undertaker and Paul Bearer have zipped up the body bag for the local wrestler. As Paul Bearer leads Undertaker away, the camera focuses in on them and Bearer speaks, in his usual spooky voice, and informs Harvey Wippelman and Giant Gonzalez that they did not destroy Undertaker at WrestleMania 9 and that that very soon Giant Gonzalez will “Rest … In … Peace” …

I'm most interested in seeing how The Undertaker's WM, undefeated streak (if he has one), is built this time. I'd also like to see who stays in the WWF and who--if anyone (Sting)--comes over from WCW.

This is my era, so I'll try to follow it

I really enjoyed the nice little touch at the bottom, where you detailed the matches from the little bonus shows such as Superstars. Keep up the good work!
