Default WCW 2000

World Championship Wrestling
2000

Back Story:

November 5, 1999 - Time Warner executives announced the sale of World Championship Wrestling to a private consortium. After a stream of bad booking on the part of Vince Russo and a huge loss in viewership, World Championship Wrestling was getting to the point where they were becoming a financial liability to Time Warner.

Many people speculated that Vince McMahon, among others was the owner of WCW. However, the owner of WCW remained anonymous to not only wrestling fans, but also to the wrestlers and the workers within the company.

November 22, 1999 – Time Warner announces they have terminated WCW programming effective December 13, 1999. Time Warner executives feel World Championship Wrestling does not fit their vision for their television brand. The December 13 edition of Nitro will be the last Nitro before Starrcade.

November 24, 1999 – WCW announces a new television deal with TNN. The television company will give WCW a two hour timeslot on Monday Nights from 9:00 pm to 11:00 pm EST as well as a one hour timeslot Saturday Nights from 10:00 pm to 11:00 pm EST. This television deal catches the wrestling world off guard since Extreme Championship Wrestling currently has a deal with TNN.

December 1, 1999 – In order to protect itself from bankruptcy, Extreme Championship Wrestling has been acquired by World Championship Wrestling effective 9:00 a.m. this morning. ECW has been struggling for months with debt when WCW took over the product.

The private consortium has taken over much of the professional wrestling world as WCW and ECW has been purchased and merged by this anonymous group. WCW has been hyping this anonymous consortium for weeks as the backstage crew has began to prepare for the debut of WCW Nitro on The Nashville Network (TNN) on January 3, 2000. Fans still question who the private owner in, and expect that the other giant wrestling promotion, World Wrestling Federation may have a part to play in the merger.

December 2, 1999 – WCW has come to terms with the release of a number for WCW’s talent. The most notable releases are Vince Russo and Ed Farrara who have been in charge of WCW’s creative department for the last several months. All this comes just weeks before WCW big pay-per-view and final show of 1999 before the January 3 Nitro Debut, Starrcade.

December 4, 1999 – WCW has revamped its final pay-per-view of 1999 as Starrcade leads the way to a new era in professional wrestling. WCW executives will not mention any matches for the card prior to the show, but promises a complete revamp of what the company is all about. They only way to learn about WCW Starrcade is to watch it Live on Pay-Per-View.

Live from Greenville, SC

The first show of WCW Nitro on the new TNN starts off with highlights from WCW Starrcade 1999 with the last PPV of the millennium featuring the return of Eric Bischoff as the new owner of the company. Footage from the lethal lottery matches show Benoit and Steiner winning as well as Ric Flair and Shane Douglas winning and advancing to the next round. The WCW Nitro opening video plays with the same theme music as before. The video shows the Nitro Girls dancing with Ric Flair, Sting, Chris Benoit, Scott Steiner, Diamond Dallas Paige, Hulk Hogan, Lex Luger, Eric Bischoff, Rey Mysterio, Eddie Guerrero, and Booker T.

The Pyro goes off in the arena as the metallic WCW logo entrance is lit up. Tony Schiavone and Bobby Heenan welcome fans to the most historic Nitro since its debut in 1995. Tonight is the debut of Nitro on TNN.

Eric Bischoff’s theme plays as the owner of WCW enters the building. Fans cheer for Easy E as he walks down to the ring. Eric stands in the middle of the ring with a microphone and is prepared to address the fans.

Eric – Welcome to WCW MONDAY NITRO.... (fans cheer). I Love each and every one of you too... Tonight is a brand new start for WCW on a new network and with new champions, but with this fresh perspective, I’ve felt that it’s time to really shake things up with this company. As many of you know I am the person who purchased WCW and ECW... (fans chant ECW). So now there is a lot of talent in the back ready to shake this company’s foundations. Also with a new network comes a lot of opportunity to expand and build on what we have. Tonight marks a huge change in WCW as we prepare for our greatest endeavour yet. At this time I’d like to ask Rowdy Roddy Piper and the American Dream Dusty Rhodes to come down here.

Piper’s music plays as Roddy and Dusty Rhodes both come down to the ring.

Eric – On January 31, 2000 WCW will be split into two separate brands. As a new brand extension, WCW will have two separate entities. The WCW Monday Nitro brand will be led by Commissioner Roddy Piper (fans cheer) and will continue to be in its 2 hour time slot from 9 – 11 pm EST. (fans cheer). The second WCW will debut on TNN starting Saturday, May 5 in a 90 minute timeslot starting at 9:00 pm EST. This new brand led by Commissioner Dusty Rhodes will feature the other half of WCW`s talent on the WCW Xplosion. (fans cheer). In order to make this brand extension successful, we’re going to hold a draft right here tonight on Nitro. Every tag team, every champion, every wrestler, and every backstage person will be entered into the lottery and could be drafted to either brand (fans cheer). So I wish the two of you good luck in your draft picks later on this evening.
Eric Bischoff shakes hands with both men as his music plays. The three of them leave the ring as Tony and Bobby explain the impact this will have on WCW.

A series of kicks takes Guerrero to the ground where the Cat is able to attempt a pin. Guerrero fights back to a vertical base only to be sent back down with a spinning heel kick. The Cat poses for the audience and dances around momentarily. Guerrero gets back to his feet and sends the Cat to the canvas with the Three Amigos. Eddie Guerrero drops some elbows on the Cat before engaging in further discussion with RVD and the ECW guys. When the Cat gets back up Eddie whips him into the corner and charges after. A head scissors from the top rope sends the Cat to the ground and Eddie rolls him up for a near fall. Eddie climbs to the top again and drives off with a Frog Splash. He covers the Cat for the win.
WINNER: Eddie Guerrero via pinfall at 4:12

Eddie grabs his championship and leaves the ring, once again exchanging words with Rob Van Dam.

At the entrance ramp Piper and Dusty make their next draft picks. Piper announces that the second person drafted to Nitro is the World Heavyweight Champion, Chris Benoit. The next person drafted to Xplosion is Big Sexy Kevin Nash.

Backstage:
Eric Bischoff talks to Doug Dillanger about who attacked him at Starrcade. Bischoff warns Dillanger that if he doesn’t find out by the end of tonight then WCW will be looking for new security.

BREAK

“Also Sprach Zarathustra” plays as the Nature Boy Ric Flair comes down to the ring. A huge pyro display goes off for Flair before he grabs the microphone. All of the fans in Greenville give Flair a standing ovation.

Flair – The Nature Boy has come home to Flair Country. WOOOOOO (fans WOOO back)... Tonight is the night that the world has been anticipating for a long time. The NWO is finally out of WCW and the Horsemen have returned to the top. WOOOOOO

Tony and Bobby comment on Flair’s reference to the Horsemen. What is he talking about?

Flair – It’s taken a lot of years, and a lot of hard work, but finally the most elite, the most dominant group in professional wrestling has returned once again to kick ass, take names, and become champions.

The Horsemen theme plays as Ric Flair introduces the new Four Horsemen: The US Heavyweight Champion, Buff Bagwell; the World Tag Team Champions, Dean Malenko and Perry Saturn; finally the World Heavyweight Champion, Chris Benoit. All five of them stand in the middle of the ring with the championships held high in one hand and their four fingers held high with the other hand.

Flair – At Starrcade, everyone thought that Flair would be going for the Gold, but this year’s Starrcade was different. The Nature Boy is still on top, but this time through the most dangerous team in professional wrestling. What took the NWO years to accomplish took the Horsemen one night. WOOOO

Chris Benoit is handed the microphone.

Benoit – I don’t give a damn what anyone says. I am the new World Heavyweight Champion because I was able to use my resources and get to the top of the mountain. I went to Flair when I heard about Starrcade being a new beginning and I said “Nature Boy, we need to make an impact. We need to shock the world” and he agreed. So when it came time to wrestle for the World Title we knew that one of us would get that opportunity. Scott Steiner, you fought hard, but at the end of the day you didn’t have what it takes to be the World Heavyweight Champion.

Scott Steiner comes out to the ring. Big Poppa Pump jumps Chris Benoit, but the Horsemen team up on him with a five on one assault. Benoit slaps the crossface on him in the middle of the ring as Malenko and Saturn beat the living hell out of him. Flair grabs a steel chair from the outside and orders the Horsemen to hold him up. Flair cracks the chair across the head of Steiner and he falls to the ground. The Horsemen’s music plays as they all pose for the crowd once again; this time the crowd is booing them.

BREAK

Tony Schiavone mentions that during the break, Eric Bischoff announced tonight’s main event as Hulk Hogan and Chris Benoit wrestling for the World Heavyweight Championship.

Rowdy Piper and Dusty Rhodes make their next picks for the draft. The third draft pick for Nitro is Dean Malenko and Perry Saturn. The third draft pick from Xplosion is Total Package Lex Luger.

Match 3 Summary:
Goldberg vs. Psicosis

Goldberg comes down to the ring and immediately plows through Psicosis with a spear. A Jackhammer sends Psicosis to the canvas and Goldberg covers him for a 1...2...3.
WINNER: Goldberg via pinfall at 0:32

Goldberg poses for the fans and turns around to find Rhino standing in the ring with him. Rhino drives Goldberg down to the canvas with a Gore. Rhino immediately jumps over the barricades and through the crowd before security catches him.

Rowdy Roddy Piper and Dusty Rhodes make their next draft picks. The Nitro pick is Rey Mysterio Jr. The Xplosion draft pick is Johnny the Bull and Big Vito.

Video:
Booker T talks about his brother’s behaviour at Starrcade, and the fate of Harlem Heat. Booker T doesn’t want to believe that his brother turned his back on the team, but will be at Nitro next week to confront Stevie Ray.

BREAK

Backstage:
Eric Bischoff asks Doug Dillanger if they have figured out who attacked him at Starrcade. Dillanger brings over Mean Gene who argues that he knows nothing about what went on a Starrcade, but promises to get his team of attorneys after Dillanger for the way they’ve treated him.

Rowdy Piper and Dusty Rhodes make their next draft picks. Coming to Nitro on January 31 is Sting. The Draft pick for Xplosion is The Sandman.

Match 4 Summary:
Macho Man Randy Savage (with Miss Elizabeth) vs. Bret Hitman Hart

The Macho Man returns to WCW Monday Nitro in singles competition against Bret Hart. The Hitman jumps Savage before the bell even rings; fighting him on the outside of the ring. Savage rakes the eyes of the Hitman and drives him face first into the ring steps before rolling him into the ring. The match officially starts with Savage dominating Bret Hart. A series of rights send the Hitman into the corner where Savage is able to climb on the second rope and continue to pound away on him. Hart fights back and drops Savage with a back breaker. Savage tries to fight back to a vertical base, but the Hitman quickly starts working on the knee of Randy. Bret Hart builds a huge offense over Savage in the ring before Charles Robinson forces him to back off. When Savage gets back up, he starts to build some momentum over the Hitman. Lex Luger comes down and confronts Elizabeth on the outside of the ring. Savage jumps out and attacks Luger. The two of them fight up the aisle and over to the entrance way. Referee Charles Robinson counts Savage out.
WINNER: Bret Hart via count-out at 5:33

Bret Hart raises his hands in victory before leaving the ring. Meanwhile security fights to get the Macho Man and Lex Luger off of each other. Eric Bischoff comes out.

Eric – Enough is enough. You two have a score to settle and we’re going to make that happen. Our first official match for WCW Souled Out will be Lex Luger and the Macho Man Randy Savage in a Steel Cage Match.

BREAK

Dusty Rhodes and Rowdy Piper make their last two official draft picks from the lottery ball. The last two men drafted to Nitro are Chavo Guerrero and Diamond Dallas Paige with Kimberly. The last two draft picks for WCW Xplosion are Fit Finlay and Goldberg

Match 5 Summary:
World Heavyweight Championship
Hollywood Hulk Hogan vs. Chris Benoit w. Ric Flair (c)

After Michael Buffer makes the formal introduction to the Main Event, Hulk Hogan makes his return to WCW Nitro. “American Made” plays as he arrives Hollywood style with red pants and boots, and his Hulkamania T-Shirt. Hogan is also wearing a red and yellow feather boa as he struts down to the ring. The World Heavyweight Champion comes down as the Horsemen’s music plays. Joining him is the Nature Boy Ric Flair. The two men stand toe to toe in the ring and exchange words while Tony Schaivone talks about how big of a match this is for Chris Benoit. After a brief exchange of words Chris Benoit slaps Hogan in the face. Hollywood Hogan locks up with Chris Benoit and throws him into the corner. They lock up in the middle of the ring again, but this time Benoit nails Hogan with a knee to the stomach. Benoit chops Hogan a few times before backing him into the ropes. The Crippler whips Hogan across the ring and clotheslines him to the canvas. The match continues in Benoit’s favour until Hogan rakes him in the eyes. Hogan scoopslams Benoit and drops a couple of elbows on him. Flair stands on the outside of the ring and yells orders at Chris Benoit to get back at Hogan. Benoit gets to his feet and clotheslines Hogan to the canvas. The champion picks Hogan up and drives him to the canvas with a German Suplex. Benoit continues with two more German Suplexes until he releases Hogan. Chris covers him for a near fall as Hogan kicks out. The World Champion continues working on Hulk Hogan in the center of the ring before slapping the Crippler Crossface on him. Chris Benoit applies a lot of pressure to the arm of Hogan as he attempts to get to the ring ropes. Hogan is finally able to make it to the ropes and Benoit is forced to release the hold. The math continues with the champion in complete control. Benoit climbs to the top rope and dives off with a head butt. Hogan is pinned for a near fall but kicks out. Hogan goes through the ritual of Hulking up in the ring before driving Benoit to the canvas with a big boot. The Hulkster drops the Atomic Leg Drop and covers Benoit. As referee Nick Patrick is about to count three, Ric Flair pulls him out of the ring. The Nature Boy punches Patrick to the ground. Malenko, Bagwell, and Saturn race down to the ring and assault Hogan in the ring. The Horsemen take turns beating down Hogan in the corner. Flair grabs a steel chair and gets into the ring. Hogan is lifted up only to be nailed with a huge chair shot that leaves him bloody in the ring.
WINNER: Hulk Hogan via disqualification at 7:41

The Horsemen continue to beat down on Hulk Hogan when an injured Scott Steiner comes down to the ring with a lead pipe. Steiner uses the pipe on the Nature Boy and on Saturn, but the other Horsemen jump him as well. Benoit cracks the championship across the skull of Scott Steiner then punches the daylights out of him. The lights go off in the arena for a moment. When they come back on all of the horsemen are levelled out in the ring while the ECW wrestlers stand tall in the middle of the Nitro ring. Paul Heyman grabs a microphone and addresses the WCW fans.

Paul – I always knew the heads of WCW were stupid, but I never realized how stupid they really are. Yes I’m talking about you Eric Bischoff. You’ve been looking around here all night trying to find the person responsible for attacking you at Starrcade. All this time I’ve been sitting here at ringside. I am the man responsible for attacking you. I’ve hated your guts for years and am sick and tired of ECW being second rate to the garbage you call wrestling. You’ve wanted a war for years, so now you’ve got it. We’re not backing down from you or anyone else in WCW. I’ve told you that we’re taking WCW to the Extreme and it’s going to start tonight!

Rob Van Dam and Raven hold up a WCW banner and set it on fire as Nitro goes off the air.

Review:

WCW is off to a great start for 2000 with Eric Bischoff as the owner of the company. The whole Draft Lottery and ECW stuff is obviously pretty unrealistic, but I like your choices for the commissioners. Piper and Dusty Rhodes would do well in those jobs.

DDP and Jarrett is a great opening match for Nitro. Glad to see DDP pick up the win.

Eddie Guerrero and the Cat is a good match as well. I'm happy to see you bringing back the TV Title, but am wondering why RVD interfered in the match.

Thank you for bringing back the Horsemen!!! I like that it seems you're making him a heel group again. I think it will be interesting to see Chris Benoit as a heel in WCW. Scott Steiner coming down and getting beat up sets up a great feud between the two of them.

Rhino Goring Goldberg sets up a huge feud between the two of them. I can't wait to see that play out.

Savage and Hart is a good star powered contest. I like how you're setting up a feud between Savage and Luger over Elizabeth, but wish you would explain it a bit more.

The Main Event is actually quite good. I was a little worried that Hogan being in the world title match would lead to Hogan winning the belt back, but you didn't do that. You put Benoit over, while setting up a continuous feud between Hogan and the Four Horsemen. Will we see a triple threat match between Hogan, Steiner, and Benoit?

Great Job overall. I like the draft picks and would be looking forward to seeing the supplemental draft picks.
