WWF/WCW Starrcade 2001
December 09, 2001 from San Diego, California
On the July 9th edition of Raw, Eric Bischoff debuted and it was revealed that Shane and Stephanie McMahon sold their WWF stock to Bischoff, making McMahon and Bischoff co-owners. This led to a "Winner Takes All" Survivor Series match for sole ownership at Survivor Series, which Team Bischoff won. As a result, Eric Bischoff became the sole owner of the WWF and Vince McMahon was forced out of his former company. On Raw the following night, WWF Owner Eric Bischoff merged the WWF with Shane’s WCW and renamed the upcoming PPV event WWF/WCW Starrcade. As a result of the merger, Bischoff announced that all WWF championships would be unified with WCW championships in matches at Starrcade. Bischoff stated the match at Starrcade to unify both World Titles would be WWF Champion Steve Austin vs WCW Champion Goldberg. However, The Rock still had a guaranteed WWF Title rematch from Wrestlemania, so Shane McMahon allowed The Rock to enter The Unification Match at Starrcade if he could beat Kevin Nash, Scott Hall and Chris Jericho in a Handicap Match, which The Rock did with help from Kurt Angle. On the November 26th edition of Raw, Hollywood Hogan got his rematch from No Mercy for the WWF Title against Steve Austin, but due to outside interference, the match was declared a No-Contest and Bischoff promised Hogan a spot in the Undisputed Title match at Starrcade. Therefore, Starrcade would feature a Fatal-Four-Way Elimination match between WWF Champion Steve Austin, WCW Champion Goldberg, Hollywood Hogan and The Rock to determine the Undisputed Champion.
Another primary feud heading into the event is between Sting and The Undertaker. At the September pay-per-view, Unforgiven, Sting made his debut when he interfered in a WWF Championship Match between the Champion Hollywood Hogan and The Undertaker, helping Hogan retain the title. The following month at No Mercy, Sting defeated Undertaker after hitting him with a baseball bat when Undertaker went for the Last Ride. On the November 22th edition of Smackdown, Eric Bischoff announced Shane McMahon as the Smackdown General Manager. On the same show, Shane booked a handicap match, with Undertaker facing Sting and Hollywood Hogan, with the stipulation that if he won, Undertaker could choose to face any superstar at any event. Shane put many stipulations in Undertaker's way during the bout, but despite this and taking a huge beating, Undertaker won the contest. As a fallen Undertaker laid at ringside, McMahon began taunting him and demanded to know what kind of match Undertaker would seek now that he could pick anyone to face at anytime. The injured Undertaker chokeslammed Shane and then said that he would be competing in a Buried Alive match at Starrcade against Sting, noting he would bury him "six feet under". Undertaker then picked Shane up and tombstoned him.
One of the predominant matches on the card is Chris Jericho versus Kurt Angle. Their feud first started when Jericho attacked Angle during their elimination match at Survivor Series. After being eliminated, Jericho ran back into the ring apparently to help his partner, but instead nailed him with a steel chair, costing his team, particularly Angle the match. On the November 26th episode of Raw, Eric Bischoff scheduled a match between the two for Starrcade. Later that night, Kevin Nash and Scott Hall defeated Angle and Jericho. Towards the end of the match, Jericho turned on Angle and Angle slammed him. Angle was hit by an Outsiders’ Edge and a Jacknife as a result and was pinned. After the match, Jericho, once again, hit Angle with a steel chair, busting him open before applying the Walls of Jericho. On the December 6th edition of Smackdown, Kurt Angle returned, when he jumped the ring and attacked Jericho. Jericho was barely able to escape and Angle told him that at Starrcade, he would not only beat him, but he would also break his ankle.
