Default WCW 2007: Don't Call It A Comeback...

My last thread ended fucken ages ago, it's not even worth me linking to it. If you want to look, I promise you it's well over thirty days because I've barely logged on since May.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Greenwich, CT - November 23rd, 2006

It’s Thanksgiving at the McMahon mansion and the entire family is there for the holidays: Vince, Linda, Shane, Stephanie, Hunter, Marissa and the grandchildren all make for the perfect family portrait- rich, successful and happy. Or at least, they are on the surface.

After the meal, a lavish affair prepared by Vince’s own personal chef, the whole family retires to the lounge to enjoy some wine, more conversation and to watch the youngsters have fun. Suddenly, this peaceful scene is broken when Shane, who seems to have been lost in contemplation, finally decides to speak his mind.

“Mom, Dad, Steph… everyone, really. I’ve been thinking some things through recently and I’ve got an idea I want to run past you all.”

There is a pregnant pause, the room falling silent at the severity of Shane’s tone.

“Dad, I know you always said you wanted me to learn to run the company but, well, I don’t feel as though have that experience yet. As I get older, I can’t help noticing that more and more of the responsibility for running the company is going to Steph and Hunter and, well, I guess I’m fine with that. But I’ve also started to get frustrated with how the company is running.”

“How do you mean, son?” the elder McMahon asked, concerned.

“Dad, it seems like we’re banging our heads against a wall. The best thing we’ve done for business this year is the ECW relaunch, but that doesn’t change the fact that Raw and Smackdown have dropped in quality over the past year and I think I know what the problem is.”

“Problem?”

“Yeah. I think we’re suffering from a lack of competition. Creative have got lazy, they aren’t working as hard as they used to, as hard as you expect them to. They need competition to inspire them. I’ve been looking at Jeff’s company down in Florida and it’s obvious that they’re never going to fill that gap. The brand split didn’t do it, either, because people saw right through it. We couldn’t create our own competition that way.”

“So what do you want to do about it?”

“I’d like to ask your permission to strike out on my own and relaunch WCW completely independently of the WWE.”

“Absolutely not.”

“Dad, I know that’s just an emotional response. This’ll be good for you, good for the company and good for business. Plus, I get to rebuild the company from the ground up, do things my own way and learn the trade the way you always wanted me to.”

“And if I give permission, when would you want to do the relaunch?”

“In the new year. I want to get Nitro on the air on January 1st.”

“Okay, you have my blessing. But you’re not to take any WWE-contracted talent with you. I’m serious, you take so much as a member of the ring crew, I’ll pull the plug.”

“Thanks, Dad.”

It seems extremely interesting even from the title. How you are going to draw a respectable WCW roster will be fun to read and it is extremely creative. Still unsure here if this is a side show like Superstars or NXT or if this is a toalyl different company, but I am sure alll will be explained.
Best of luck and hopefuly you'll keep this one going. It has potential however I do suggest maybe fonting, colouring and etc. to help the presentation.

My fault, minor brainfart - forgot that formatting doesn't carry!

Also, yes, it's a separate company.

Shane had struck out on his own and the planning for the WCW relaunch had begun. He’d used his contacts to get a deal to put Nitro on NBC from January first and assembled a decent office staff, but it was rapidly becoming clear that he was going to need help to run the place. On a wing and a prayer he jumped on a private jet and took a flight down to Cody, Wyoming where he eventually tracked down the man he was looking for, Eric Bischoff, at his favourite fishing spot.

“You couldn’t just call, Shane?”

“It’s too easy to say ‘no’ over the phone. I didn’t want to take any risks.”

Bischoff reached into his cooler and hands Shane a beer.

“So, let’s hear it, what’s the sales pitch.”

“What sales pitch?”

“Everyone in this business knows you’re relaunching WCW, it’s the worst-kept secret in wrestling right now.

“You’re right, Eric. My dad has banned me from picking up any contracted WWE talent but the thought occurs that, well, you aren’t contracted talent. You have the book deal... but no talent contract. And you’re the best man for the job I have in mind.”

“What job is that, Shane?”

“Executive producer of WCW.”

“No.”

“Look, Eric, you’ve done the job before. You built the WCW name in that position and, together, we can be a great team. I’ll handle the business side, you handle everything on television.”

"Everything?"

“Everything. Minimal interference from me.”

“Let’s assume I agree. What have you got in place so far? What does the company infrastructure look like?”

“I’ve set up an office out in Los Angeles, so we’ll be a west coast promotion this time out. The rings, trucks, sets, all the TV equipment is on order but if you take the job, you should feel free to approve all of that and make any changes you see fit.”

“Talent?”

“None. I mean, I‘m at your disposal and you should feel free to bring in a friend or two, but otherwise I’m thinking we look at the guys my dad’s company has released over the last few years and give them a second chance to shine.”

“And who’s booking this thing? I mean, I don’t want to book. Cornette and Heyman, the best guys for the job, are tied to your dad’s company. So are Flair and Rhodes. Bill Watts is bat shit crazy. There’s nobody out there to hold the book.”

“We’ll figure it out, Eric. It’s not a big deal. I take it this means you’re in?”

“I guess I am. I just hope I don’t regret it.”

This is definitely an interesting concept. I will be interested in seeing how you plan on pulling off WCW when a lot of the former WCW is either with WWE or TNA. For a relaunch of WCW to happen, I would expect that it would consist of some big names from the original company. Good luck with this as I will be keeping an eye out over the coming threads.

You got me hooked but I just suggest you wait a bit before posting further updates. Give people time to come in and read the first one before posting a second or even a third. If people have tons to catch up on it scares them away.

This as long as it keeps the feel of WCW has the potential to be a huge BTB. Im gonna be honest, I can't freakin' wait to read more!

No disagreements from me, I just like to get my backstory out of the way. I'm going to add one more part today, then give it a few hours to breathe.

Thanks, I appreciate the kind words, I just hope I can live up to expectations.

December 4th, 2006

It’s Monday morning and the feeling at Titan Towers is very much one of ’the morning after the night before.’ The previous night had seen the running of the disastrous ECW December To Dismember pay-per-view, a show that was poor in terms of promotion, quality and buys. Rumours were spilling out from backstage about a furious bust-up between Vince McMahon and ECW head booker Paul Heyman about the show. They’d been butting heads for weeks over the show’s creative direction and it was inevitable that it would come to a head if the show failed.

Shane was in his office in LA doing paperwork when he got the call.

“Shane, it’s Paul E.”

“Hey Paul. Caught the show last night, it was a bit of a let down.”

“Don’t I know it, Shane. Look, I’m sure you’ve heard that your father and I have had a bit of an argument. We couldn’t get on the same page over the show and, well, he’s not happy about how things turned out. He never heard the old saying about ‘too many cooks’ - or so it seems.”

“That’s unfortunate, Paul, but I’m not sure why you’re telling me all this.”

“It’s simple, Shane. I know all about your WCW relaunch and I want in. I know you need a booker and, as of today, I need a job.”

“He fired you?”

“Less than an hour ago. So whaddya say, is there a job down there for me?”

“Give me a sec, Paul. I’ll call you back.”

Shane hung up the phone and hit the intercom.

“Janie, will you ask Eric to come in here, please?”

A couple of minutes later, ‘Easy E’ appeared in Shane’s office.

“What’s going on, Shane?”

“I just wanted to check in. How’s preparation looking?”

“We’ve got the Georgia Dome for January 1st, marketing are running spots for that now.”

“Good. But I was thinking more on the talent side.”

“I’ve spoken to a few old friends and some of the old WCW crew has agreed to come in. Bagwell, Kanyon, Luger, Sid, Hall. Scotty Steiner is in, too, but it was a tough sell.”

“That’s a great start. And you’ve spoken to the guys my dad let go these past few years?”

“Yeah, they’re in.”

“Do you have a booker yet?”

“Still looking. I’ve got Court Bauer coming in, but he’s not had a lot of experience booking at this level yet.”

“What if I told you I’d found one?”

“Who?”

“Heyman. Dad fired him about an hour ago.”

“You’re kidding?”

“Can you work together? I mean, I don’t want any bad blood backstage.”

“Shane, we buried that shit when we were the GMs up north. We’re not bosom buddies, but we can keep it professional.”

“That’s all I needed to hear.”

He picked up the phone and dialled Paul’s number.

I loved your previous threads so I just thought I'd come in and take a look. Right off the bat, I'm just gonna' say that I actually really like the idea. Usually when somebody brings back WCW I don't like it, but everything seems to fit in nicely here. Shane asking his dad for permission was a tad bitchy, but it got the job done, and set the scene nicely. The interaction between Bischoff and Shane was okay to, although I would have liked Bischoff to be a little more of an asshole, tbh. The final segment was good with Heyman wanting a job. Pretty smart thinking to base this around when Heyman got fired. Honestly though, hopefully you don't do to many more backstage segments because it seems every thread that gets posted around here that tries to be 'different' has Bischoff and Heyman at the helm.

Anyway, very promising start. I can't wait for more.

Hallelujah.

Everything looks pretty great so far. I was somewhat surprised at how easy Vince gave in to Shane to begin with, considering his well renowned stubbornness, however I can appreciate you not wanting to spend too much time on the backstory. The rest is really good, and I'm not sure how much I can really emphasise how excited I am to see this back. Your TNA thread was one of my favourites, and this already seems to be set to be amazing. Really looking forward to it bud.

Good luck.
