How NWA-TNA came to be
On March 31st, 2001 Bob Ryder, Jeff Jarrett and Jerry Jarrett went on a fishing trip discussing what will happen now that the WWF has a monopoly on the wrestling industry. They discussed how a prominent wrestling company in WCW had been to such great heights just four years ago and now the company is out of business. With two of the three “top” wrestling companies out of business Bob Ryder believed that many wrestling stations will not even look at putting wrestling on their station as it would hurt their stations business and ratings overall. Ryder thought out loud that a wrestling company wouldn’t need a television deal. Rather, a wrestling company should just go straight to pay per view. Ryder and Jerry Jarrett seemed to think of it as just “talk”, but Jeff Jarrett really began to think about the suggestions Ryder had mentioned. Jeff was wondering “would a wrestling company work just on pay per view?”.
A few weeks later, Jeff Jarrett called up Bob Ryder and asked him about his thoughts on actually producing a wrestling show just for pay per view. Ryder didn’t know what Jarrett was talking about until Jarrett reminded Ryder of their discussion during the fishing trip. Ryder tried to assure Jarrett that he was just “shooting the poop” but Jarrett dismissed that and said that he wants to make those ideas into reality. After several moments of trying to get Ryder on board, Ryder gave in and told Jarrett that this was a crazy idea, but it could just work. Jeff was able to convince his father as well to get involved with the project as Jerry Jarrett has always had a “wrestling mind”.
Jeff, Jerry and Bob set up a meeting with In Demand executives to attempt to work out deal to air their wrestling program on the service. The idea was that the wrestling program would be a weekly show on the pay channel at a reasonable $9.95. The meeting ended up being a success as they pitched the idea of a more risqué product as on pay per view they wouldn’t have any restrictions. The deal was made, with the In Demand getting a pretty big cut out of the buy-rates each week as they had their doubts. Bob, Jeff and Jerry were now on a mission to find both writers and wrestlers to put the product all together.
They focused on the need of writers first. Jeff was thinking of who would be a good fit and he thought of his good friend, Vince Russo. Ryder and Jerry tried to convince Jeff that this was a bad idea but Jeff came up with several reasonable points for Russo to get a chance with the company. Russo made the Attitude Era and is the best writer out on the market. In their company, they will not have any restrictions or “suites” to prevent Russo from creating captivating television. After a long discussion, Jeff was able to convince his partners that it was a good idea to at least try and get Russo.
During a meeting with Vince Russo, it was clear that Russo was not in any mood to return to the wrestling business but Jeff Jarrett continued to mention to Russo that they wouldn’t have AOL people killing their product. It would be all of them coming up with the ideas and wouldn’t have any restrictions. A couple of days later, Russo signed on with the company and asked what was the companies name. Jeff Jarrett didn’t have one. Russo figured as such and told Jarrett that if this is going to be a “risqué product” it should have a different name. Thus, Russo suggested the name TNA, which stood for Total Non-Stop Action but any high school and college kids know that stands for Tits and Ass and that it would be a great way to get that demographic. Jeff Jarrett agreed with that statement.
Also, at this point they needed to associate themselves with the National Wrestling Alliance for more exposure and the unlimited talent that all of those markets have for them. The official name of the company would be NWA-TNA.
Fast forward to June 19th, 2002. Jeff Jarrett, Bob Ryder, Vince Russo and the recently hired writer Ed Ferrera are planning out the direction of TNA. After several months of recruiting, they were able to get a pretty good roster set up.

National Wrestling Alliance/Total Non-Stop Action present Weekly PPV #1 Date: 6/19/2002 From: Huntsville, Alabama Announcers: Mike Tenay and Don West
A video highlighting the history of the NWA is shown. The video also highlights some of the top young talent that NWA-TNA has to offer.
NWA-TNA opening video
Mike Tenay and Don West welcome everyone to the first edition of NWA-TNA live on pay per view. Tenay makes sure to heavily put over the product as being the real alternative to the WWE and says “if you like wrestling, well then this is the place to be!”. Don West chimes in and promotes what is scheduled to be on the show. West puts over the gauntlet for the gold match which will crown a new NWA-TNA World Heavyweight Champion. Also tonight, we will see “the King of Old School” Steve Corino take on fellow ECW alumni Jerry Lynn. West and Tenay both put over the X-Division and hype up a four way X-division match that will kick start the show.
Opening Contest: AJ Styles defeated Jimmy Yang, Jorge Estrada and Low Ki: A good way to showcase the X-Division and a good first match to introduce TNA to the world. Early on, Yang took all three men out with a springboard moonsault on the floor which was a big spot for the opening moments. Estrada missed a springboard senton splash and was spiked down by Ki with a brain buster. Ki was busy playing to the crowd and thus was taken out by Styles with a springboard forearm. Yang managed to take Styles down with a hurricanrana off the top but missed a double springboard moonsault. Ki recovered and planted Yang with the Ki Krusher 99. Ki was met with a dropkick to the back from Styles that send Ki to the floor. Styles planted Estrada with a tornado DDT before hitting the Spiral Tap on Yang to pick up the win.
After the match, Styles celebrates the win and blows off Ki’s attempted handshake.
Vince Russo music and the authority figure for NWA-TNA makes his way down to the ring to a mixed reaction. Scattered chants of “Russo” and “Russo sucks” are heard from the crowd. Russo tells the fans that he has finally found a company that he can lead from scratch and develop his own ideas without having to take over from someone else and their mistakes. Russo believes that they have the best talent in the world in the back and soon people will realize this. Russo doesn’t care if the fans love him or hate him, he doesn’t lose sleep over that. Russo says that he is focused and is going to make TNA the best company and that the WWF will be looking up at them soon enough. Russo puts over the talent we just saw in the first match (most notably AJ Styles) and also puts over Chris Harris and James Storm. Russo knows that all the boys in the back want to make this company the best company in the world and with hard work they will achieve that goal. Russo gives announcement regarding the NWA-TNA World Heavyweight Championship. Russo says that the new champion will be crowned via a twenty man battle royal. Russo assures the fans that their will be plenty of surprises tonight. Russo drops the microphone and power walks to the back.

Siaki tells Goldylocks that he is the best looking wrestler in TNA and that the fans have paid to see him wrestle. Goldylocks says “no one knows who you are”. Siaki tells Goldylocks that they better take notice because Siaki is here to make an impact. Siaki wipes some sweat onto the face of Goldylocks before leaving the scene.
Second Contest: Sonny Siaki defeated Konnan: Konnan with the early advantage with a rolling thunder clothesline and a face buster for a near fall. Konnan attempted a back drop but Siaki clubbed Konnan on the back and connected with a snap swinging neck breaker. Siaki also drove Konnan down with a Samoan Drop which got him a near fall. Konnan battled back with a one handed bulldog and a wheelbarrow suplex that got a two count. Siaki battled out of the 187 and managed to hit the Siakalypse to pick up the win.

Backstage, Goldylocks is standing with America’s Most Wanted (Chris Harris and James Storm). Harris tells Goldylocks that for the longest time he and Storm have been looking for a place to showcase their skills and make a name for themselves. Harris thanks Vince Russo for giving them their shot and says that they will not let him down. Storm chimes in and focuses on their opponents The New Church. Storm says that he feels bad for the New Church because they are in the way of America’s Most Wanted making a name for themselves in the business. Storm finishes the segment off by saying “sorry about your damn luck”.
Third Contest: America’s Most Wanted defeated the New Church: This was an all out brawl between for rabid wrestlers. AMW where out to prove themselves while the New Church were looking for blood. Harris connected with a spear early on Slash and nearly won the match. Malice got involved with a big boot and a spinning side slam on Harris as well. Slash also connected with a reverse neck breaker for a near fall. Harris battled back and drove Slash down with a running bulldog and managed to tag in Storm. Storm cleaned house connecting with the Eye Second Ride on Slash but Malice broke up the count. All four men began to brawl with Malice and Harris brawling on the floor. Moments later, Storm hit the Swinging Noose on Slash and got the win.

Fourth Contest: Buff Bagwell defeated Lenny Lane: Lane really made this a comedy match as he would keep feeling the muscles of Bagwell. Backstage, Scott Hall is warming up until Jeff Jarrett comes into the picture. Jarrett tells Scott Hall that he can not be messing around here in TNA. Hall knows this and tells Jarrett that tonight he is going to become the NWA-TNA World Champion. Jarrett chuckles and tells Hall that he will former be just a mid-card champion. Jarrett tells Hall that he doesn’t think Hall would be able to stay sober long enough to even make it to the ring let alone winning the most important championship in this business. Jarrett walks by Hall, but makes sure to bump right into him before doing so.

Russo goes to speak, but Ken Shamrock’s music hits and Shamrock comes down to the ring rather furious about the announcement. Shamrock reminds Russo that he was the last man eliminated in the battle royal last week and that he should be getting the match with Jarrett. Russo is rather blunt with Shamrock telling him he isn’t a top draw like Scott Hall. Shamrock gets right in Russo’s face and threatens him in the corner. Shane Douglas rolls into the ring and attacks Shamrock from behind connecting with the Pittsburgh Plunge. Russo eventually tells Shamrock that if he wants a match so badly, he will face Shane Douglas tonight!

CM Punk made a few appearances in TNA in 2002, however he wasn't a regular with the company until 2003 with Julio Dinero as the Gathering with Raven. He very well could be coming into this diary, soon.
