If Paul London and Matt Bentley formed a tag-team in a realistically written federation, and wanted to establish character by emphasizing their close ties to a legendary figure in Shawn Michaels, how far would a company like TNA or ROH take such an angle? Considering Michaels is loyal to the WWE, would it be possible to even mention his name?

Road Dogg and Billy Gunn basically acknowledged the WWE in TNA so you could call them the Heartbreak Kids because it acknowledges HBK but doesn't mention him directly.
Actually, that's what I was going to name the team. What I mean to ask is how they would address Shawn directly? I am currently working on a program between the two of them and the newly formed Hart Dynasty. You can obviously tell where I'm going with this...I didn't want to spill the beans, but what the heck...

Firstly, great feud idea, secondly I feel you can't address HBK directly but you could could say they have worked with The Icon, The Showstopper etc. Hell, make their finisher 'The Showstopper' you could make all kinds of references but you can't name him directly. Having one of them doing crotch chops could work and you could 'tune up the band' during a match but instead hit another move like a spear for example.
I just waffled on with a few ideas there but the main conclusion is you can't acknowledge him directly IRL but it's your BTB and you could mention HBK if you wanted to.
BTB isn't really that much of a hard thing. It baffles me to see how come people over think things. Over thinking is a recipe for disaster. If you want to use Shawn Michaels' name directly, do it, if you don't, then don't. It's not rocket science.

ROH mentioned multiple times they were trained by Shawn Michaels in 2002 as they keyed Shawn Michaels school in, using a lot of their young graduates such as Bryan Danielson, Brian Kendrick, Paul London, Michael Shane, Hernandez, Oz and a few others I can't remember right now. They even had a three way between London, Kendrick and Shane to dertermine just who would be nicknamed The Showstopper.
Anyway, you could do what ROH did and have Rudy Boy Gonzalez travel with the show, managing them. He was the co-trainer with Michaels and you could simply mention that. Saying Shawn Michaels in name shouldn't be against the law of your fed because he's a world renowned wrestler.
WWE will never mention TNA directly whereas TNA does mention the WWE. They're trying to brag about how they've pulled talent away as well trying to mock them like the Vince skit all those years ago. You'll never see the WWE use the letters T N A in a million years. They've taken the odd shot with subtle references, but that's as far as they'll go to mentioning their competition, if you can call TNA that.
Since when? Last I heard they still team in Puerto Rico and on the indies. They even teamed in WWE last year, IIRC.
I've read that they separated last year. I remember them being squashed by Show last year, and after that I heard they were done as a team on the indies in the US.

The WWE are more subtle, they dive the divas finishers used by top TNA talent. Michelle McCool/AJ Styles being a good example. If TNA were a bigger threat, then the WWE would openly knock their competition, the WWE however don't view TNA as competition and why would they when Impact draws on average 1.6 million viewers a week. ECW drew 1.8 million viewers Tuesday night!
Has there ever been a BTB on here set during The Monday Night wars where one booker books RAW whilst the other books Nitro?
