WCW Nitro Preview- April 17, 2000

After an amazing Spring Stampede where the United States, Cruiserweight, Tag-Team, Hardcore, and World Heavyweight Championships were finally decided. What is going to be the aftermath of Spring Stampede? Tune into Nitro to find out!

Terry Funk defeated Norman Smiley for the WCW Hardcore Title last night and Chris Candido won a Six-Pack Challenge for the WCW Cruiserweight Title. Tonight, they will face each other in a non-title Champion vs. Champion match. Who will come out victorious?

Shane Douglas and Buff Bagwell were impressive last night when they defeated Harlem Heat and Ric Flair and Lex Luger in two separate Tag-Team matches to win the WCW Tag-Team Championship. Will they be able to keep their momentum tonight when they face The Marmalukes in a Non-Title Match?

Scott Steiner showed that he is called Big Papa Pump for a reason. He defeated The Wall, Mike Awesome and Sting to win the WCW United States Championship last night. Tonight, he and Sting are going to meet in the middle of the ring to talk about last nights title match!

Since Jeff Jarrett won his first ever WCW World Heavyweight Championship last night, Jarrett is going to have a special celebration with his title. There has been rumored to be A-List Celebrities there to celebrate with Jarrett. Find out who's there tonight.

All of this and more is going to happen on WCW Monday Night Nitro Monday at 8-10 ET on TNT.

Confirmed Matches:
-Champion vs. Champion Match: Terry Funk vs. Chris Candido
-Non-Title Match: Shane Douglas and Buff Bagwell vs. The Marmalukes (Big Vito and Johnny the Bull)

WCW Nitro
April 17, 2000
American Airlines Arena

*Opening Pyro hits then the camera goes to Tony Schiavone and Mike Tenay.*

Tony Schiavone: Welcome everyone I'm Tony Schiavone here with my partner, "The Professor" Mike Tenay, for tonights fabulous edition of Monday Nitro. Mike, last night at Spring Stampede we saw "The Chosen One" Jeff Jarrett win his first ever WCW World Heavyweight Title. "Professor", who do you think will be Jarrett's first contender for the Championship?

Mike Tenay: Well Tony, I have to think the Master of the Diamond Cutter, Diamond Dallas Page, should get a rematch for the title at Slamboree.

Schiavone: Speaking of number one contenders, we are going to find two tonight. The matches will be Shane Helms vs. Rey Mysterio, Jr. for number one contendership of the WCW Cruiserweight Title.

Tenay: Also, there's going to be a number one contenders match for the WCW Hardcore Title featuring Mike Awesome going up against Fit Finlay.

Schiavone: We also have the Tag-Team Champions, Shane Douglas and Buff Bagwell, take on the Marmalukes, Johnny the Bull and Big Vito.

Tenay: Don't forget Tony, our Champion vs. Champion match featuring the WCW Hardcore Champion, Terry Funk take on the WCW Cruiserweight Champion, Chris Candido.

Schiavone: It looks like an exciting Nitro, Mike, and let's get it started with our first match of the night, the Cruiserweight Title number one Contender's match featuring Shane Helms from 3 Count taking on Rey Mysterio, Jr. from the Filthy Animals.

Rey Mysterio, Jr. (w/Konnan, Juventud Guerrera, and Disco Inferno) vs. Shane Helms (w/Shannon Moore and Evan Karigas)- #1 Contenders Match for the WCW Cruiserweight Championship.

The match starts off with the high-flying Mysterio hitting a bunch of arial moves. He goes for the cover after about 3 minutes, but is broken up by a 2 count. Mysterio then sets Helms up for the 619, but Helms ducks the kick and gives Mysterio, Jr. a low blow. Helms then hits some power moves on Mysterio, Jr. before attempting the Vertebreaker and connecting. Helms goes for the cover..
...1...
...
...2...
Disco Inferno comes in and breaks out the count. These two men brawl for 3 more minutes before Helms hits the Nightmare on Helms Street. Helms goes for the cover again..
...1...
...
...2...
Konnan this time breaks up the cover. Mysterio then quickly hits Helms with a Tornado DDT. Mysterio goes for the cover..
...1...
...
...2...
...1/2!
But is broken up by Evan Karigas. As the ref is escorting Karigas, Juventud Guerrera comes in and hits a Splash Mountain on Helms. Mysterio then hits a Droppin' Da Dime on Helms. Mysterio goes for the cover..
...1...
...
...2...
...
...3...!

Winner at 6:47 and number one contender for the WCW Cruiserweight Championship, Rey Mysterio, Jr.!

*As Mysterio, Jr. celebrates inside of the ring with Konnan, Disco Inferno, and Juventud Guerrera, 3 Count enters and all 7 men brawl. Eventually, the Filthy Animals and 3Count are separated, not before getting some words in though.*

Schiavone: What a great match by these two men, but I'm still in shock at what happened after the fight.

Tenay: You're right Tony. Not to discredit Mysterio, Jr., but he needed all the help he could get from the Filthy Animals to win. Disco and Konnan broke up the pin count twice, then Juvi hit the Splash Mountain to help Mysterio, Jr.

Schiavone: Well maybe so, but Helms had help from his friends Shannon Moore and Evan Karigas, so they're even. Anyways, when we come back from commercial, we'll have The Marmalukes, Johnny the Bull and Big Vito, take on the WCW Tag-Team Champions, Shane Douglas and Buff Bagwell in a Non-Title Match.

*COMMERCIAL*

Shane Douglas and Buff Bagwell vs. The Marmalukes (Johnny the Bull and Big Vito)- Non Title Match

If there was ever a 2-second squash match, this was it. The Marmalukes had exactly three moves hit in the whole match, a punch and kick from Big Vito, and a scoop slam from Johnny the Bull. Bagwell hit a swinging neckbreaker, powerslam, and an underhook DDT before tagging in Douglas. Douglas hit a crossbody, belly to belly suplex before tagging in Bagwell again. Bagwell hit a Yellowjacket Suplex on Big Vito and covered..
1...
2...
3...!

Winners at 2:59, Shane Douglas and Buff Bagwell!

Schiavone: Douglas and Bagwell were absolutely dominant here tonight against an established tag-team such as Johnny the Bull and Big Vito. What are your thoughts about the tag-team Champions?

Tenay: Well you're right Tony. I think the Marmalukes only got about 5 moves in the whole match (3 to be exact) and were simply dominated by Douglas and Bagwell. I wonder if any tag-team in WCW will have any chance to defeat these two.

Schiavone: I'm not sure myself Mike, but what I am sure about is that when we come back, Mike Awesome will take on Fit Finlay in a Hardcore match for number one Contendership for the WCW Hardcore Title.

*COMMERCIAL*

Mike Awesome vs. Fit Finlay- Hardcore match for number one contendership of the WCW Hardcore Title

This had to be one of the best matches on Nitro, just because these two used the "Hardcore" concept of the match to perfection. After 2 minutes of brawling, Awesome got a table out and prepared to Awesome Bomb Finlay through a table, but Finlay reversed wtih a DDT through the table. Finlay then went for the cover, but Awesome kicked out at 2. Awesome then scoop slammed Finlay. Finlay in agony, chop blocked Awesome's right leg.

Finlay attacked Awesome's leg for the next few minutes, putting on a Cloverleaf submission. Finlay then got a chair and put it right on Awesome's leg then stomped on it. Finlay then went for the cover, but Awesome kicked out at 2 1/2. Finlay got out a table, but Awesome went and gave a suicide dive over the ropes and collided with Finlay. Awesome then set up the table inside and threw Finlay inside of the ring before giving him a sitout Awesome Bomb through a table. Awesome covers..
1...
2...
3...!

Winner at 6:27 and number one contender for the WCW Hardcore Title, Mike Awesome!

Schiavone: There we have it, another number one contender and this one is for the Hardcore Title. It'll be Awesome vs. Funk for the Hardcore title at a future date. Today, Awesome prevailed in a tough Hardcore match.

Tenay: You're right Tony, Awesome was... Awesome. So now we have 2 Slamboree matches confirmed, with Chris Candio vs. Rey Mysterio, Jr. for the WCW Cruiserweight Title and Terry Funk vs. Mike Awesome for the WCW Hardcore Title.

Schiavone: In only 3 weeks, WCW will present it's next Pay-Per-View, Slamboree, at the Kemper Arena in Kansas City, Missouri. As you have said, Tony, we already have 2 matches confirmed. When we come back, we'll have a confrintation between Scott Steiner and Sting about last nights Spring Stampede.

*COMMERCIAL*

*Scott Steiner's entrance theme goes, as Steiner is in street clothes with a mic in hand. Steiner then walks up to the middle of the ring.*

Steiner: Hey all of my freaks, finally, Scott Steiner is the WCW United States Champion. You can now go wild for the Big Bad Booty Daddy. (Crowd Boos) Don't you treat your United States Champin like that, I deserve better from all of you. I beat The Wall, Mike Awesome, and Sting fairly, by making them tap to my Steiner Recliner. Now, I have no idea what Sting wants, as he doesn't DESERVE a rematch (Crowd Boos). So c'mon Sting, what do you want? Do you wanna feel Big Papa Pump's muscles? Do you wanna tell him he's the best United States Champion ever? Do you want to t---

*The arena goes black, The Scorpion, Sting's symbol, is shown. Sting then comes down with a mic in one hand and a baseball bat in the other.*

Sting: Scott, you have to be the biggest piece of sh*t that I have ever seen. You say you defeated all those three men fair and square. That's a lie and you know it. You beat the Wall by DQ, had to have Kevin Nash hit Mike Awesome with a stretcher, and had to have some phsyco take me down inside the ring, then put the Steiner Recliner on me. If anything, you have to be the biggest phony in WCW.

Steiner: You can't talk to me like that you freak. I demand some respect, I'm the WCW United States Champion, you are just a guy who prances around here wearing face paint WITHOUT any titles. Just leave me alone dammit!

Sting: Oh, is that all you want? Fine, I'll leave you alone, right after you beat me in a one-on-one match for the WCW United States Championship.

Steiner: Fine, at Slamboree, you vs. me in a one-on-one match. Be ready to get your ass kicked.

Sting: You can kick my ass under one condition, none of the nWo 2000 members, that means Kevin Nash, Scott Hall, or Jeff Jarrett, can interfere in the match and cost me to lose it. Otherwise I'm going to go to GM's Ric Flair's office and demand you be stripped of your title. Got it?

Steiner: It's a deal!

Schiavone: Oh my god! We have our third match confirmed for Slamboree! This card keeps looking better and better, Professor.

Tenay: You're absolutely right, Tony. Candido-Mysterio, Jr., Funk vs. Awesome, and now Steiner vs. Sting for the WCW United States Title. I can't wait for Slamboree.

Schiavone: Neither can I, Mike. But before we can get to Slamboree, we still have 2 things on the agenda. That's Jeff Jarrett's title celebration and Chris Candido vs. Terry Funk in a Champion vs. Champion match. And that match is next!

*COMMERCIAL*

Chris Candido (w/Tammy Lynn Sytch) vs. Terry Funk- Champion vs. Champion Match
This match starts off in Candido's favor, hitting two delayed suplexes. He then tries for a superplex on the turnbuckle, but Funk reverses with some elbows and throws him on the canvas. Funk gets down from the turnbuckle and hits Candido with some elbows. Funk goes for the cover, but Candido kicks out at 2. Funk walks over to Candido, picks him up, and hits a clothesline.

For the next 4 minutes, the two brawl with Funk hitting a snap DDT, brainbuster, locking in a crossface for about 20 seconds, and hitting a double underhook suplex. Candido even tries to get out a chair and some steel chains, but Funk denies it. At the end of the match, Candido hits Funk with a leg drop and walked over slowly for the cover, but Funk surprised him with a small package for the cover..
...1...
...
...2...
...
...3...!

Winner at 5:17, WCW Hardcore Champion, Terry Funk!

Schiavone: What a surprising pinfall win for the WCW Hardcore Champion! Candido had this match won, but then Funk surprised him with the small package. Professor, have you ever seen that from Funk?

Tenay: That surprised me as well Tony. I didn't know that Terry had a small package in him. It surprised us all most as much as it surprised Candido, who looks pretty upset that he lost that way.

Schiavone: So the Hardcore division is now 1-up on the Crusierweight division. And when we come back from our final commercial break, we will have the Jeff Jarrett celebration ceremony.

*COMMERCIAL*

Jeff Jarrett's entrance starts with him coming down to the ring with the WCW Championship around his waist.

Jarrett: Finally, finally, Jeff Jarrett has the gold that belonged to him around his waist, the WCW Championship. Listen here slapnuts, I beat DDP last night at Spring Stampede to become WCW Champion, and am going to stay champion until I say otherwise. So slapnuts, without further adieu, let's start my celebration ceremony!

Kevin Nash, Scott Hall, and Scott Steiner all come out to celebrate with Jarrett.

Jarrett: Thanks guys. It really means something to me when you guys all come out here to celebrate with me, unlike these slapnuts in the crowd that try and take me for granted. Thanks a lot.

Nash: You know us Jeff, we always got your back. No matter what.

Hall: Hey yo, "Big Sexy" has a point here. Whenever you need help, just give the nWo 2000 a ring and we'll be here. We know you can defeat anyone on this roster, but if anyone plans on taking your WCW Championship, they have to go through us first.

Jarrett: Well, that's what I want to talk about, my number one contender. I really don't think anyone deserves a chance for my WCW Championship. You guys agree?

Nash, Hall, and Steiner: Totally.

Ric Flair's entrance rings throughout the arena, with Flair coming out in a suit.

Flair: Jeffy, Jeffy, Jeff, Jeff. That's where you whooo have it all wrong. Since I'm the WCW General Manager whooo, I can select the number one contender for your WCW Championship whoo. I have a hard time of deciding who I should have as the contender whooo, so I'm going to have a 8 man number one contender tournament to see who whooo will face you at Slamboree!

Jarrett: What are you talking about slapnuts? You seriously believe that 8 other WCW superstars are worthy enough to face me for the WCW Championship? Please, slapnuts, tell me who is in this 8 man tournament, as I don't believe they don't stand a chance.

Flair: Jeff whoo you want to know who are in the whooo number one contenders tournament, you got it! The eight men are "Mr. Perfect" Curt Hennig! Booker T! Diamond Dallas Page! Sid Vicious! Goldberg! Hulk Hogan! Kevin Nash! and Scott Hall! Whooo whooo whooo whooo!

Jarrett: What! Slapnuts, did you just say that two of the members of the nWo 2000 are in this tournament? Are you on drugs?

Flair: No, Jeff, I'm not whooo! But you know what, next week on Nitro, you're going to be in a match. Wait, make that a handicap match. You, Jeff Jarrett, will be in a 10 on 2 handicap elimination match featuring some of the best tag teams of WCW! Whooo whooo whooo whooo!

Schiavone: What! I don't believe it! A 10 on 2 handicap elimination match is scheduled for next Mondays Nitro! You'll have to tune in to see what happens! For "The Professor" Mike Tenay, I'm Tony Schiavone. Goodnight everyone!

Nige’s Nitro Feedback

The backstory was very well organised and looked to be very well thought it, indicating the show will go the same way. Let’s have a look, but before I read the show, I’ll admit that I didn’t watch a great deal of WCW

Rey & Helms was a great match to get in first, especially for me since I love their matches. This was good too and set up well for the finish from the Splash Mountain, ending with the dropping of the dime. It was good that it wasn’t a total squash with Helms getting some offence in at the start. The brawl afterwards was good too to keep the faction feud going on

I never knew that Douglas and Bagwell were a team, so I guess you are building them up straight away by going over The Mamalukes. Good way to do that as they looked in complete control to get the win

Nice hardcore match and great to see Finlay being used well here against Awesome, with the hardcore background suiting him down to the ground. The tables were the only weapons used here, I would have included some chairs and other things, but since this was only a small recap, it’s not that big of a deal. Awesome was in a better position to win the match in 2000 so you chose the right winner

I was wondering if we were going to see any promos because there should be one before each match really, at least. It was okay, both men came over well and realistic, just the match watch was accepted a little too easy by Steiner, but that’s a good way to start the feud

Candido was always a guy I liked and with Tammy alongside him, they had something good. I wasn’t sure what to expect here, but I was pleasantly surprised to be honest. The roll up win works well for both men and you did too in that respect

The final promo was okay, but I lost count of how many times Jeff used the word “slapnuts”. It just got irritating after the first three times, try to use other words instead of the same one over again. Flair coming out and stacking the odds against them is great and sets up lots of possiblties with the nWo, so that is exciting

Overall man, it has potential, but you need to have some backstage segments, 2 promos for a TV is just not enough, and there were only 4 matches too which is weak. There were no real big names in the matches either, so the star power was lacking there too. For a first shot, not bad as you will always develop skills as you write more shows

-Rumor is that Booker T may be pushed in the upcoming tournament, but he may not win the title. They've like what he's done, and want to push him as the top face. That has been seen as he pinned Hall in a Dark Match Main Event.

-WCW Management has decided that they most likely will have 4 title matches at SuperBrawl, with the Tag-Team Championships not being defended. It's being looked as Mysterio Jr. vs. Chris Candido, Funk vs. Awesome, Steiner vs. Sting, and Jarrett vs. Tournament Champion for the title matches.

-WCW will be planning on cutting a little of the "extra fat" on their roster. Names haven't been rumored yet, but expect Rick Steiner and The Wall may be the first two released.

-WCW liked how Jeff Jarrett ran his promo last week and wants to keep him on the mic, as they enjoy his work. They don't plan to have him wrestle too much on Nitro, as they'd rather have him give them a great performance at a PPV then decent performances Nitro after Nitro.

-WCW plans to run two house shows before next weeks Nitro at the Alltel Arena in Little Rock. They are planned for the Von Braun Center in Huntsville, Alabama and the Mobile Civic Center in Mobile, Alabama. The headliners appear to be Jeff Jarrett vs. DDP for the WCW Heavyweight Championship for the Von Braun show, and Scott Steiner & Jeff Jarrett vs. Ric Flair & Lex Luger for the Mobile Show.

-Past Mondays Nitro achieved a 3.5 rating.
