Great American Bash Review
Opening promo could’ve been a bit lengthier, and the content in it would’ve been lengthier too. But it was fine enough to hype the event.
King Booker vs. Finlay
Neat and decent match up to kick off the show. It was a 10 minutes match up, and I guess it was just fine. And surprisingly, I loved the flow of this match up. It looked perfect to me. Sharmell played up her part really well, but I just didn’t like how she got in to the ring, in the early goings to attack Finlay - It should’ve been saved for the finish. Booker going ‘absolutely berserk’ at the referee in his FIRST pinfall didn’t look right in my opinion. Hornswoggle’s part was good too, and surprisingly, I enjoyed this match up. As I’ve already said, flow was great, and length was just fine. The way you explain the wrestler’s expressions and tensions is also good, but the excitement factor was lacking here big time. I don’t think I even read one crowd interaction in this one (Except the ‘Holy Shit’ one). So yeah, include the fans interactions more because it adds excitement to the matches. Finish was good though, with King Booker beating Finlay through some cheap tactics. Good finish and a good match to kick off the show. Rating:7/10
I don’t know why, but I didn’t like this promo. I don’t like seeing Mark Henry as Chavo’s bodyguard too. This promo just didn’t look right to me.
CM Punk vs. Mister Kennedy
Okay, this was a better wrestling contest. Kennedy needed to me cockier though. Punk’s flying neckbreaker from the top in the earlier part of this match was awesome, and the interactions here with the fans were awesome too. One flaw that you’re constantly doing is that you don’t make the wrestler sell the move perfectly. Let them sell the opposite wrestler’s move perfectly, and it’ll be great. The flow in this match was good. The length, although being recap, looked fine to me. I didn’t like seeing Punk kicking out from Green Bay Plunge that easily though. Had Punk put his foot on the bottom rope to kick out, it would’ve looked better. It was Kennedy’s finisher, and it looks weak now. Solid match up/recap nonetheless. Rating: 8/10
Very short promo, but decent enough to hype the main event.
Cena wasn’t in character here, but I’m liking what you’re doing with him. So I’ll watch out. By the way, think of any other idea because the interviews are getting boring. It has happened so many times so far.
Lol at the remix of I Walk Alone and Slow Chemical. Are Kane and Batista a tag team in this thread? I hope not. Had Kane and ‘Taker walk out to the ring respectively, it would’ve been much better.
Number One Contendership:
The New Breed vs. Kane and Batista
Stipulation in this match is original, so I love it. I was surprised to see Brown don’t go for a pinfall attempt after he connected his finisher - Pounce - in the earlier goings. Anyway, I loved how Batista took out Striker with his Batista Bomb, and got a title shot. Liked how Burke got out via DQ also. Striker then coming out and nailing Batista with 9 steel chair shots was huge. Striker looked too crazy here. Maybe one or two steel chair shots would’ve been okay, but NINE is too much for Striker in my opinion. But the way you had Striker took out Batista with 9 steel chair shots mean that the feud will continue. Seeing Striker in a high profile feud with Batista is very hard to imagine. WHOA!! Brown goes to the main event!! Definitely a huge surprise. It looks like you’re a huge Brown mark. I don’t like that guy, but it’d be interesting to see what you do with him. You gotta build Brown better though because he’s going for a major match at SS. Good to see Batista then eliminating Brown to win the match up. Nice match up, but Striker’s 9 steel chair shots were too much. So Brown vs. Batista vs. ‘Taker/Edge for the title at SS? Looks great, but I’m not sure of Brown (Maybe because I don’t like him). Rating: 6.5/10
WOW! MVP went through a 20 foot ladder and he’s doing an interview? Surprise. HUGE surprise. Not realistic. And not good. MVP was in character here though, but I didn’t like how he called Matt Hardy a ‘washed up has been’. MVP going for the WHC? Let’s see. But not a good promo at all. Maybe because it felt unrealistic.
Thanks for the review Apple Spitter, it will be returned in due time.
Short GAB Analysis.
I actually really did enjoy writing the first match as it was thrown in at the last minute to make up the numbers but it will certainly be built upon. King Booker being frustrated very early on will progress in to something bigger in the next few weeks, as will this feud. Don't be surprised to see a rematch at Summerslam, at first the rematch was going to happen on Smackdown but after it got decent enough reviews I feel I will take it to Summerslam.
The CW Match was there to get Young over as a legit contender. The planchas and high risk moves weren't there because it didn't suit the style of Young, even Chavo doesn't pull off big moves that often. Palumbo and Young will become more of a unit, expect Henry to drift away from Chavo in the coming months.
It completely slipped my mind until I read Thunderman's Royal Rumble and he picked up on the Triple Threat rules, I understand I do rush things at times but of course no-one is perfect and I will try and improve.
Kennedy/Punk was probably one of my favourite matches I have ever written (behind Mysterio/Santino at Vengeance) and I am setting that as a benchmark for my other PPV's
MVP and Matt Hardy, the first 2 falls weren't meant to be there, only for shock factor. I understand that MVP got up a little too quick but I should have mentioned that when MVP tripped Hardy up he would have collapsed again because it was an adrenaline rush type of thing.
I'm not exactly a Brown mark but after seeing what trouble he has been through recently I felt he needed to go in to the main event. I liked this match, Striker/Batista definitely will not happen on PPV at all, not even on a weekly show. I liked the unpredictability factor of this match because you didn't know who was going through.
Just to clear a few things up, the Cena incident, it was late, I did fuck up but Smackdown, and possibly RAW, will help sort things out as I did balls that one up.
Thank you EVERYONE for their reviews, Apple Spitter you actually got all of your predictions right so you get a gift and all reviews are going to be returned. (A hell of a lot)
Last week Randy Orton made a statement to the world by knocking out John Cena, with the help of his dad Bob Orton. Cena will clearly want revenge tonight but Coachman is reluctant to have him fight Orton so close to the main event at Summerslam but something’s gotta give on RAW and I don’t think Coach can hold these 2 big for much longer but Orton has his mind on other things recently, namely Triple H.
DX are in town and they are continuing their personal crusade against Mr. McMahon and his cronies. As many know DX are splitting up at Saturday Night’s Main Event so HHH and HBK will want to get in as many pranks as possible on the chairman but Vince McMahon hasn’t been taking things so light heartedly recently, what with the formation of the ‘Flair Five’ quite possibly the greatest team ever assembled in WWE history, Vince has every reason to be unhappy. He may be willing to take it out on superstars left right and centre this Monday night.
Amongst the people who have felt the wrath of Vince McMahon, former enemies Carlito and Ric Flair have felt the full brunt of it and mystery still surrounds what happened to Carlito last week after having his head smashed in to a car window but none other than Stone Cold Steve Austin has managed to ‘borrow’ CCTV from the arena and he promises to show it live tonight. Jeff Hardy replaces Carlito in tag team action this week with Ric Flair after he found a new lease on life after his brother was forced out of RAW by Vince McMahon. Hardy vows revenge but Vince has put the unorthodox pairing up against Santino and ‘Anyone the Italian can pick up from the slums of Phoenix’ Who does Santino have in store for the two?
Rey Mysterio made the rematch last week; Santino accepted but something about Mysterio has certainly changed since he was shocked at Vengeance by Santino who managed to keep his title. Mysterio is unstable and Santino needs to get the hell out of Arizona as Mysterio continues on with the Road to Summerslam.
Last night at the Great American Bash, the World’s Greatest Tag Team very nearly cost Deuce and Domino their tag titles. The World’s Greatest Tag Team have somehow convinced Coach to sanction Cade and Murdoch against the WWE tag team Champions Deuce and Domino for their titles in what should be an enthralling contest.
Also… 4 of the top women’s contenders, Beth Phoenix, Trish, Melina and Mickie James. The latter 2 face off to go through to the final of the women’s tournament. Trish vs. Beth is in 2 weeks.
Catch all of this and more at 8/7 Central and on the USA Network.
The pyro explodes and after it stops Cena instantly comes down to the ring with a microphone in hand; he is receiving mixed reactions from the crowd after his actions last night. Cena then starts speaking about last night and how he didn’t want to infect the result of the match but he did ‘what any good Champion would have done.’ Namely stopping Edge hitting ‘Taker with the title and defending himself. He then said that was now history, at Saturday Night’s Main Event he would go one on one with a man he has never beaten, the Undertaker, and he wouldn’t go down without a fight, especially not before the biggest party of the Summer and his match against Randy Orton. Cena then surprisingly changes tone and screams at Orton to get his ass out here. Orton then comes out with Bob Orton by his side, Orton then tells Cena to shut up which garners some heat. Orton goes on to say that he has been unbeaten on RAW since Judgement Day and the only blemish was Cena’s victory against Orton at Vengeance which was a ‘massive fluke’ Orton then goes on to say that Cena would pay for that like he did last week when he was knocked out backstage. Suddenly John Cena’s dad comes behind Bob Orton and hits Bob’s cast with a steel chair before kicking him in the crown jewels. Orton then grabs Cena’s dad before giving him a low blow, Orton is about to punt Cena S.r in the head but Cena rushes down and exchanges right hands with the Legend Killer, Cena grabs the advantage by lifting Orton on to his shoulders and then planting him down on to the ramp with the F-U. Cena then picks up the steel chair and is about to smash Orton over the face when Coach comes out to tremendous heat. Coach said he had just returned from a Board meeting and the only way to end the hatred would be something big, the ‘big’ thing would be announced after the main event which would be the biggest RAW main event of all time, quite literally. Orton and The Great Khali would team up to face the WWE Champion John Cena and the Big Show! Orton scarpers away as we cut to commercials.
After the commercial break the first match is underway which is Melina vs. Mickie James in the mini tournament to crown a number one contender to Victoria’s women’s championship. Melina holds her own in the opening few minutes but Mickie soon starts to work on the arm of Melina and using a variety of arm bars and chin locks before Mickie starts to pick up the pace and is about to go for her own version of the Stratusfactor but Melina hits a back suplex and drops Mickie on her head. Melina is only able to get the two count as Melina starts to dominate using underhand tactics. Victoria then comes out to ringside to distract the two women but Mickie hits a Mick Kick on Victoria, Mickie then puts Melina in position for a powerbomb but at the last second Melina reverses it in to a victory roll but she only gets the two count. Melina then ducks the proceeding Mick Kick and follows it up with a DDT but Mickie gets the foot on the bottom rope to break the count. Mickie then hits the swinging neckbreaker but again only gets a two count. The crowd are urging Mickie on as she climbs to the top rope, Melina slowly follows her but is kicked off of the top rope but stays on her feet. Mickie then dives through the air and hits a moonsault but Melina reverses it in to a pinfall of her own but only manages to suffice a 2 count. Mickie then finishes the match off after getting to her feet and hitting the Mick Kick for the victory.
Todd Grisham then catches Vince McMahon backstage, Todd asks Mr. McMahon if he has any information regarding who the 5th member of his group is, Vince only says someone BIG! Vince then walks in to his office to find DX spray painted on his walls and famed photos. Vince shuts his eyes and tries to blank all the hatred but it isn’t working, Vince is angry and he puts Shawn Michaels in a handicap match later on against Rob Van Dam and Chris Masters.
After the break Rey Mysterio is conducting a backstage interview where he talks about how he has tried to keep calm the past few days but he assures Santino he would bring his A-Game to Summerslam and nothing would stop him holding the Intercontinental title for the first time. MVP then walks past and says to Mysterio that he would need luck against Santino at Summerslam but MVP wouldn’t need luck at SNME because he is a great man and an even better wrestler and he would soon be the top of the WWE. Mysterio and MVP then face off, hinting at a possible rivalry in the future.
The next match is ‘The Nature Boy’ Ric Flair and Jeff Hardy vs. Santino and anyone he can find. Firstly Stone Cold Steve Austin comes down to the ring and then shows everyone the video tape, it clearly shows Carlito getting attacked by a hooded figure but no-one knows who it is until he starts dancing like a maniac. It must be Shane McMahon! Shane then comes out to the ring and says that it damn right it was him and that he would have taken out the rest of you lot but he would wait until Summerslam, WarGames the greatest creation by an awful company and as it has showed Flair and others hell in the past he would promise the 5 that it would be no different in the no DQ, hostile and massive environment. Whether it be Jeff Hardy, Austin, HBK, Flair or Carlito getting pinned first in what was now an ELIMINATION- LAST TEAM STANDING RULES match and not the traditional rules, it wouldn’t matter because you would want to quit the WWE after such a savage beating. Austin looks incensed and runs at Shane who quickly calls out security but security do not notice HBK standing behind Shane, HBK hits Sweet Chin Music on Shane but he is immediately shut down and taken away. Normal service finally resumes as Santino comes out with none other than his SNME opponent MVP! Suddenly Jeff Hardy gets on the mic and he has an announcement to make, he says that he would be replaced in the match by none other than Carlito, Jeff Hardy then makes way for Carlito as Hardy goes to the announcing booth for a chat with J.R.
The match gets off to a good start with Santino nearly hitting the TKO on Flair but Carlito manages to get Flair out of the predicament but Santino dominates and focuses on the legs of Flair before finally tagging in MVP who looks like he doesn’t want to be there and puts a small amount of effort in to attack Flair who easily pokes MVP in the eye and tags in Carlito but MVP has already tagged in Santino who looks bewildered. Carlito attempts a backcracker in the middle of the match but Santino reverses it in to a roll up but only gets a 2 count. Towards the end of the match Santino tags in MVP to face a weakened Flair and MVP hits the Playmaker but instead of making a cover he suddenly springs to life and attacks Santino, knocking him off of the apron. Flair then hits chops to MVP as if he was telling him a message to not disrespect anyone, Flair then tags Carlito in as Santino grabs the legs of MVP. Carlito then hits a backcracker for the victory. After the match the 3 men hug in the middle of the ring before Carlito motions to Vince that his time is up.
The A-Listers are backstage talking to Deuce and Domino when the World’s Greatest Tag Team show up and tell the A-Listers Dykstra and Nitro to get the hell out, TWGTT then tell Deuce and Domino they should always look behind their back because you never know what is going to happen, Deuce and Domino then walk out of the room with their gaze firmly locked in the World Tag Team Champions.
The next match after the commercial break is Shelton Benjamin’s open challenge, Benjamin is looking confident after proclaiming that they are the World’s Greatest so that must mean he is the greatest performer in the world. He asks anyone to comes from the locker room, Benjamin smiles but that is soon wiped off of his face when none other than ‘The Game’ Triple H comes out to ringside as this match gets underway.
The match is a fast paced and frantic affair with HHH using his experience to grab the upper hand, hitting signature moves like his knee drop and hitting a double A spinebuster but not managing to get a 3 count. HHH is looking increasingly angry as Haas begins to build pressure by interfering every minute. Finally HHH snaps and takes down Haas on the apron and then going out on the outside and hitting a Pedigree on Haas but Benjamin then Irish whips HHH in to the steel pole before placing him back in the ring. HHH manages to kick out but Benjamin hits a Stinger Splash as the match comes to a close. He is about to hit a T-Bone Suplex when Deuce ‘N Domino come down to the ring, catching the eye of both HHH and Benjamin who form an unlikely partnership as HHH goes to fetch his sledgehammer. HHH then tells Deuce and Domino to bring it as he is becoming increasingly frustrated with the shenanigans of the tag teams but they refuse to go to the ring. Out of nowhere Benjamin rolls HHH up for the shock win!
After another break the next match is Deuce and Domino facing the contenders The Rednecks for their WWE Tag Team Championship. The Rednecks pretty much dominate this much from the offset, using their power to overwhelm their opponents but Deuce and Domino are smart and keeping wearing down Cade and tagging each other in in short intervals. Deuce and Domino then try to repeat their feat against Londrick by double suplexing Murdoch through the RAW announce table but Murdoch blocks the attack as Cade runs to the rescue with the big boot. Cade then throws Domino in the ring but only gets a two count. Cade then goes for another big boot but Domino ducks it and he accidentally hurts Murdoch with the big boot. Domino and Deuce then swarm the ring like vultures and then hit Cade with the Crack ‘Em in Da Mouth, Domino then covers Cade for the win.
After the match Super Crazy is backstage and says that the Mexicools will return in 2 weeks and make an impact on Monday Night RAW, he is then interrupted by a 7:25 Victory cryptic message, it then gives a countdown timer to the 27th August, Monday Night RAW in Las Vegas!
The next match of the night is HBK against Chris Masters and Rob Van Dam. Masters and Van Dam are easily dominating HBK. Masters tries to lock in the Masterlock midway through the match but HBK blocks it and throws Masters over his back. HBK then suplexes Masters out of the ring but RVD catches HBK with a stiff elbow. RVD then goes up to the top rope and attempts a split legged moonsault but HBK moves out of the way just in time. HBK then kips up and tunes up the band in the corner but Masters comes from behind and applies the Masterlock, Masters then relinquishes the hold after a few seconds on the orders of RVD. RVD then goes up to the top rope but out of nowhere comes Triple H with a sledgehammer! HHH hits Masters with the hammer before going after RVD, it’s like ’97 all over again as DX clean house but out of nowhere Orton hits an RKO on HHH to EXTREME amounts of heat. HBK is tuning up the band in the corner but out of nowhere comes EDGE who hits HBK with a spear. Vince then comes out and says that at Saturday Night’s Main Event RVD could take the night off as he wouldn’t want the greatest athlete in the WWE get injured before Summerslam. He then added the match that never was, DX vs. Rated RKO at Saturday Night’s Main Event and this time it’s more than winning and losing.
The very final match of the night gets underway but only lasts a short while as Khali decimates the referee minutes after the opening bell so we have an unsanctioned contest on our hands. Khali and Big Show face off in the middle of the ring before Orton throws a ladder at Big Show, knocking him to the floor, Orton then passes Khali a chair. Khali hits Show with the chair and shows him a taste of what could happen in the loser leaves WWE match at SNME. Orton and Cena exchange right hands and both men swing chairs which hit each other and go spiralling out of each other’s way. Orton quickly grabs a chair and smashes it over Cena’s head, at the same time Khali chops Big Show and applies the claw as Show starts to fade. Cena is still on the floor as Orton unfolds the chair, Orton then picks Cena up and RKO’s Cena on the chair! The referee then gets to his feet and declare Orton and Khali the winners after Big Show passes out. Khali then grabs Big Show and takes him to the back, leaving Orton looking down at Cena. Coach then comes out and says that you 2 love knocking each other out and that at Summerslam it would be a Last Man Standing match for the WWE Championship. Orton stares at the title as RAW goes off of the air.
Good opening segment though some parts of the segment felt a bit rushed. I'm wondering what is going to be the huge announcement though. Mickie vs. Melina was a good match with Victoria coming to the ring to try and throw the two off their wrestling game, but Mickie gets the win anyway. Nice comedy segment with McMahon, and I have a feeling Michaels is going to get the win in the handicap match but is going to be attacked following the match by Van Dam and Masters. MVP and Mysterio's confrontation was good and could be a good future feud between the two if booked correctly. Shane being revealed as the attacker was great and funny as Austin described how he knew it was Shane. The match was good, but was odd when Jeff left and went to the announcing booth. Flair and Carlito getting the win was nice and the feud between MVP and Santino continues. There match at SNME should be great. Shelton's open challenge match was good since Hunter accepted the challenge. Duece and Domino coming to the ring was good in progressing the storyline, but I'm surprised that you had Benjamin win the match over Hunter, though Hunter doesn't lose too much ground, since it was a rollup that cost the loss for him. Duece and Domino get the win in the match, and the match had great tag team wrestling in it, and great in ring psychology. The Handicap match was going well and when Hunter, Edge, and Orton all made their presence known that is when things reached the next level. Huge announcement from McMahon for SNME. The main event was not much, though I'm shocked that you had Show passed out from the Claw from Khali. As far as the LMS match between Cena/Orton for the WWE Championship, that should be huge. Overall the show was good, but it lacked promos, as their were quite a bit of matches and not many promos. Other than that, the show was good, and I'm looking forward to Smackdown.
