Re: WCW 2001- The Trio Ownership
Phillips Arena, Georgia- Backstage
Meeting W/The Trio Ownership- 3:28PM
Realization… The First of Many Fights
Ric Flair has been searching the Phillips Arena, trying to find Jeff Jarrett. After a few moments, Flair walks past Jarrett, resulting in Jeff immediately following Flair. The two reach a door, and after they both check to make sure the coast is clear, they enter it. It’s janitor’s closet. Yeah, nothing says ‘This is shady’ better than two men entering a small, dark, room.
Ric Flair: …Just a couple of more hours… Champ.
Jeff Jarrett: Ha-ha, yeah. Finally, I can lead WCW to new heights, and finally, I get to be the star!
Ric Flair: And right after you win the Title, you and me are going to have our money feud, and everyone will see you as the new ‘Nature Boy’!
Jeff Jarrett: Life is great! But anyways, what did you want to talk about? I assume the contract is still safely hidden?
Ric Flair: Of course the contract is hidden. I have it safely secured in my briefcase, in my room. Only Steve and Eric can enter there, and they definitely aren’t on to us.
Ah, you’re so naïve Ric.
Ric Flair: But anyways, we have to talk once again about the match ending.
Jeff Jarrett: Okay, what about it? It didn’t change again, did it?
Ric Flair: …It changed?
Jeff Jarrett: Yeah. Now I am going to make Hogan submit to the Figure Four, and go into a money feud with him.
Ric Flair: Yeah, funny joke, Jeff. No, you are going to make me ‘pass out’ to the Figure Four after Sting turns on WCW, and sides with the nWo. Steve and Eric made the decision, not me. I guess we’re going to have our feud up until Starrcade, where you will beat me one last time. At least that’s what I’m pushing for.
Flair stops as he sees Jarrett eyeing him very awkwardly.
Ric Flair: What?
Jeff Jarrett: That’s not what Steve said…
Ric Flair: Huh?
Jeff Jarrett: Steve. Steve Borden. He talked to me about a half an hour ago. He asked me if you told me the ending to the War Games match, and since he had been calling me ‘Champ’, I figured hey, I should go along with it. He told me that the ending was changed to what I told you, and I shouldn’t tell anyone the new change.
Flair’s eyes widen, and the two share uneasy looks.
Jeff Jarrett: …You don’t think they…
Ric Flair: No! … they can’t! I have to go!
Flair leaves the janitor’s closet, and takes off back to his room, fearing the worse. Flair knows Sting played Jarrett and him both with the ending to the War Games. But why? Does he know? That is the only plausible explanation. Thoughts continued to run through Flair’s mind as he continued to power walk back to his room. He got to his door, took a deep breath as he placed his right hand on the knob, and gave himself a reassuring thought, ‘Steve doesn’t know’. Flair opened the door, looking to check his briefcase to see if it shows any sign’s of being opened. However, when Flair opened the door, he found to his surprise he wasn’t alone. The briefcase was back on his desk, and Steve Borden was sitting down on the chair the briefcase was previously on. Flair tries to smile at Steve.
Ric Flair: …Heh… hey Steve…
Steve Borden: Save it, Flair. I know exactly what you’ve been doing you son of a bitch!
Ric Flair: …Heh… what are you talking about, Steve?
Steve Borden: You know exactly what I’m talking about. Me and Eric have both been onto you for months now, Ric! When Eric fucked around like this, he at least was more of a weasel! You! You’ve been trying to play Eric, the boys, the whole entire company, and me! Ric, come on! I know that there is something going on between you and Jeff! You two are always hanging out backstage, talking in quiet. At every meeting we’ve had, you’ve been pushing for Jarrett to be Champ, and give him all of these advantages and benefits. So here’s how it is going to be, Ric. You can tell me right now what exactly is going on between you and Jeff, or… I’ll go get Eric, and the two of us will tell everyone in the back what’s been going on. I suggest you go with the first option, Ric… this company doesn’t need drama, and I don’t want to start it if I don’t have too…
Steve stared at Ric with piercing eyes, as Flair, starting to sweat in nervousness, swallowed hard. Ric knew the jig was up, the news is out, they finally found him. The renegade, who had it made… oh, sorry. Styx is a good band, got into the song. But erm, yes, the news is out, and Flair knew, that he was caught. And now, it was the moment or truth. But Ric wanted to keep everything between himself and Steve. He didn’t want his patched relationship to be wrecked with Bischoff, and lose the trust and respect of the other wrestler’s in the back.
Ric Flair: Okay… look Steve. You, you’re one of my best friends, and I respect you more than anything. … I messed up. I made a mistake. When we were doing the contracts, Jeff didn’t want to sign with us. He wanted to make sure there was something in it for him… something to give him an incentive to sign. So he asked for a guaranteed World Heavyweight Title reign. I figured… he’d get one eventually, so why not give him what he wants, and make sure we had an over heel. But, I don’t know… it got out of hand. Over time, I became paranoid our secret agreement would be revealed, so I guess my actions were blinded. I just started to push and push to give Jeff the Title. I wanted the deal to be over with, so I didn’t have to be looking over my shoulder, and being paranoid as fuck. … And that… that’s it.
Flair took a deep sigh, and lowered his head in shame. Sting continued to stare at Ric, thinking of what to say in return.
Steve Borden: …Alright, I understand where you were coming from Ric.
Flair’s head shoots up in shock.
Ric Flair: You do!?
Steve Borden: I do.
Ric cracks a huge smile.
Steve Borden: But that doesn’t mean I’m fine with what you did, Ric. The fact is, you went behind my back, behind Eric’s back, and the company’s back altogether. This is the kind of crap that almost killed WCW before! Whether you wanted to or not, meant to or not, you played the politics hand! You could have sabotaged our company! You went against everything we’ve been preaching as a part of this new WCW! I don’t care why you made the deal, but the fact is, you did, and I’m ashamed of you, Ric. And we need to fix this situation, right now.
Steve pauses, and Ric looks at him confused.
Ric Flair: Wh-What do you mean… fix the situation?
Steve Borden: Jarrett’s not winning the Title tonight, no way in hell! I don’t care who wins it, but Jeff Jarrett is not winning the Title! I want to change the whole entire match now! Hell, I was kidding about me turning… I wanted to throw you off. But now, I wouldn’t mind doing it! Take away the glory from Jarrett! No! I want Hogan to win it!
Ric’s eyes grow wide in shock.
Ric Flair: You want Hulk to win the Title?! But Steve, I made the deal with Jeff…
Steve Borden: And I don’t give a damn about it, Ric! Jeff is a cheap son of a bitch, and is a disgrace to the company! If I had it my way, I’d fire him! He’s just like Hogan was! He’s just like Nash was! Savage! Hall! Sid! Bischoff! I don’t want him!
Ric Flair: But Steve! Please be reasonable!
Flair looks at Borden, pleading with him not to change the plans for the match.
Ric Flair: If Jeff doesn’t win after we told him we would, he’ll flip! He’s the leader of the New World Order! This is supposed to be our big storyline for months! Jeff is the cornerstone, Stinger!
Steve Borden: No… he was the cornerstone! I don’t care what deal you made with Jeff, I don’t care if he gets pissed and moans like a three-year old! JEFF IS NOT WINNING THE TITLE!
Sting finally snapped, yelling out in anger. And just as he did, there was a knock on the door, and the door was pushed open. Eric Bischoff has arrived. Flair and Borden, both were starting to get heated up with their argument, abruptly turn to face Bischoff.
Eric Bischoff: …Am I uh, interrupting something?
Flair and Borden exchange looks. Flair responds, while he starts to head towards the door, also grabbing his briefcase too.
Ric Flair: …Um… no, not at all, Eric. In fact, I was just leaving… need to take a walk…
Steve Borden: …But don’t forget Ric, I want us all to meet up again before the show… so we can discuss everything about it again…
Steve gives Ric a convincing glare before Ric turns on his heel and leaves his room. As soon as he’s gone, Bischoff eyes Borden up, knowing something went down.
Eric Bischoff: Okay, Steve, tell me… what was that all about? I know you two were arguing, and I think the whole Phillips Arena heard you shout that Jeff wasn’t going to win the Title... he confessed, didn’t he!?
Eric grinned, and looked at Steve, who was silent. Steve said he didn’t want to cause any drama, and that he doesn’t. He knows if he tells Eric what happened, then Bischoff would flip out, and chaos would resume backstage. Maybe he can find a way to work things out with Jarrett and Flair, and push everything under the rug. He just wants to help the company after all…
Steve Borden: We were arguing yes… I wanted to pitch the idea of something new for War Games, like me or Hogan winning the belt, not Jarrett. We argued about it, and I confronted him about this thing with Jarrett. He said nothing was going on… I believe him.
Eric Bischoff: WHAT!? You believe him just like that!? He says something, so you believe it! Steve, you know he is in cahoots with Jarrett! Come on! Wake up and smell it! You can’t just take his word!
Steve Borden: I…. I didn’t. He explained that he just is very fond of Jeff, and thinks that a heel champion works better than Booker as our Champ. With the New World Order needing to look dominant to make our angle look great, he figured put the belt on its leader. I said my suspicions about the briefcase, so he let me search it. Nothing. Eric… we… we were wrong. Ric is clean.
Eric looks at Steve, puzzled. Borden lowers his head, closes his eyes, and shakes his head. Eric buys it as being wrong, but Borden does for lying to Eric. Borden didn’t want to cause any drama between Flair and Bischoff… so he lied. He made himself the bad person, to take the heat off of his best friend, Flair. Bischoff still thinks something is going on, however, and the two men share an uneasy stare. However, like Borden, he doesn’t want drama, and also lies…
Eric Bischoff: Okay… I believe you, Steve. He’s clean, we were wrong. If… if you want, I’ll apologize to him. But let’s just move on.
Steve raises his head, and gives Bischoff a smile. Bischoff returns the smile, albeit it being fake. Borden is relieved, believing that Bischoff does believe him. However, Eric still thinks something is going on between Flair and Jarrett, and thinks that Borden missed something in the briefcase… whether by accident... or on purpose. One thing is for sure though… the worst is yet to come.
