For it and always will be. Although rapists, serial killers and pedophiles need to be tortured to death

It's just running around in circles and wasting taxpayer money.
Yea I know, but at the moment the costs problem isn't really something that should be compared.

Although I would prefer paying tax for someone who deserves to be executed, to be executed, rather than pay for them to live a semi-cosy live in prison.

Re: Death sentence

Quite disturbing to see that the poll is swinging in favour of the death penalty. I am 100% against it.

The main reason I'm against it is that a society cannot put people to death for crimes, no matter how severe, and then expect people to adhere to rules in the outside world. Absolute justice should always be implemented when possible and putting someone to death is not justice, it reeks far more of revenge/an eye for an eye.

Also, there have been multiple cases of wrongful execution. How can you punish someone so finally without ever truly having burden of proof?

The death penalty is absolutely not the way to deal with transgressors, no matter how disgusting or brutal their crimes.

Re: Death sentence

Against of course. Every civilised nation on Earth except America (punchline there somewhere) has done away with it.

"Killing is wrong, so we're going to kill you" makes no logical sense whatsoever.

Re: Death sentence

I'm against it, punishing someone for murder by killing them just doesn't make sense.

The vast majority of the United State's appeal and mythos is built on being purposefully different, contrary to institutional dogma that doesn't always mean leading the way in any particular area. Holding up the rest of the 'civilized' world as an example is hardly any sort of grounds for condemnation, so your attempt at wit fails. Miserably.

By the way, most sociologist have discarded terms such as First World & Civilized in favor of classifying nations based on their level of industrialization. I would have expected you to realize this from your enlightened vantage.

Re: Death sentence

the term civilised is an odd one

especially in colonial times when westerners tried to justify their actions as civilising the supposed barbarians

Justice is and pretty much always has meant retribution though. Let's face it, society has a desire to see bad guys punished; capital punishment is a nice outlet of the public outrage. The principal is not "killing is wrong". No government on Earth could exist without power of death somewhere down the line. The principal is an "unjust(ified)" killing vs a "just" killing. Execution by the state as a form of retribution for victims and the general public and completely eliminating that individual threat, is justice.
