Ointments really sit on the skin and occlude the skin," says Paula Moskowitz, a dermatologist at Brown University. "It doesn't allow the pores to breathe, and it doesn't allow the heat to escape as well."
She says if you're going to use aloe vera, it should be 100 percent aloe vera in a gel form and it should be kept chilled.
She advises against using ice, which could injure the skin even more, and says taking ibuprofen is a good idea. It's an anti-inflammatory that can reduce that burning feeling.
