Boy, 5, Shoots And Kills 2-Year-Old Sister, Police Say

BURKESVILLE, Ky. — Authorities in southern Kentucky say a 2-year-old girl has been accidentally shot and killed by her 5-year-old brother, who was playing with a .22-caliber rifle he received as a gift.

Kentucky State Police said the toddler was shot just after 1 p.m. CDT Tuesday in Cumberland County and was taken to a nearby hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.

Cumberland County Coroner Gary White told the Lexington Herald-Leader that the children's mother was at home at the time.

White told the newspaper that the boy received the rifle made for youths last year and is used to shooting it. He said the gun was kept in a corner and the family didn't realize a shell was left inside it.

White said the shooting will be ruled accidental.

An autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday.

This is obviously an accidental death and there are issues of Gun safety (Who leaves a gun in the corner when you have young children) but I'm curious about peoples opinions on it. I'm not American myself but do people feel that marketing guns no matter the caliber or style to children and branding it as 'My First Rifle' is acceptable?

Safety is priority with responsible gun ownership. The parents really dropped the ball here and are ultimately paying the price. Crying shame.

Rifles made for youths...

If you wanna give them a gun, give them stuff like this ( These were AWESOME ):

Sure it will drive the parents crazy, but atleast it keeps your loved ones alive.

Who in the right mind would give 5 year old a rifle as a gift?

I was thinking the same damn thing, RIP to that poor little girl and what emotional and/or physical impact will that leave on he brother?

Unfortunately kids will be kids, that is why as adults and as parents, we bear the responsbility, this could have been completely avoidable.
It's like we don't leave medicine lying around in easy reach of children (safety cap or not, you just don't do it), but they deemed it acceptable to have the gun just in the corner?

The issue of banning guns is irrelevant, the real issue is the parenting, or lack of it.

Yea that's right guns don't kill people.....people kill people, how many lived would have been saved if there'd had just been less guns.

How many more lives ended before anything is done.

They still sell Super Soakers so this is even more perplexing.
