Compared to Africa I say. They're the richest country in their continent and also very multicultural.
South Africa is only rich because of mining. I wouldn't call this country advanced. In 2010, the literacy rate was 88.0% and South Africa was listed joint 107th of 180 countries on the world literacy list behind many african countries.
Bigotry is high, people still believe in sorcery and rape virgin girls to avoid to get AIDS. The country isn't multicultural anymore, many Boers, Indians and British left the country after the Apartheid.
White citizens are now 10% of the population and while the rich live in "green zones" with militarized private security forces, those who are poor survive in low paid job due to the "affirmative action" system.
This governement is also highly xenophobic (against immigrants) and, I dare the word, racist against its own minorites.
Of course it's taboo and politically incorrect. You can't call a black governement succeding to Apartheid "racist".
ANC is the state party and you can't find any real opposition.

The affirmative action fucked the economy and paradoxically increased the unemployement rate. It forced a lot of companies to close, for example, white employees and administrators got fired and remplaced by black citizens. I won't speak about privatization, forced selling and corruption. Salaries (even in mining industry) are utterly low and powerty is growing among all ethnicities.
Violence is so high that many former bantustan are now left without any policemen or public services. SADF and police forces are shadows of their past and decaying.
South Africa is a future Zimbabwe.
