300 Blockbuster stores closing, 3000 jobs may be lost

It's another nail in the coffin of physical media.
Dish Network Corp., which acquired Blockbuster in 2011, has now announced that it will close approximately 300 Blockbuster stores in the coming weeks, leaving just 500 U.S. locations still open.
"Much like record stores, the video rental store is another victim of the Internet. Ubiquitous and fast broadband, combined with the rise of rental services such as iTunes made this inevitable," Michael Gartenberg, Gartner Research Director, told ABC News.

All the Blockbusters here have been closed for over a year now. Sucks, now I have nowhere to rent any games. Progression of the medium.

I haven't seen a Blockbuster in so long, I'm sure they are still popular in states like Alabama where it's still 1995.

Re: 300 Blockbuster stores closing, 3000 jobs may be lost
Used to love going to Blockbuster on Saturday nights with my family and searching for a few videos to rent, back before you could just get online and download any movie you like in a matter of minutes. Good times.
Sucks that all these stores like HMV and Blockbuster are going under and a lot of people will lose their jobs, you've gotta roll with the times but they're pretty much fighting a losing battle when their products are much more easily and cheaply available on the net

There are a couple by mine, shocked they're still here.
Thought they'd have been shut down years ago.

There is quite a large 'Blocky' near me. I guess it's been at least a year since I've used it.

1 do itunes do rental?
2 do cds and tapes count as records?
3 i think rentals have become the victim of the second hand market *cough*Game Stop*cough* if anything, who's with me?

I haven't been to a Blockbusters in fucking years, maybe even over a decade. Just never rent video games, movies etc.. If I want a game I'll just buy it and I mostly end up liking it anyway so I keep hold of it. As for Movies you can pretty much just get them online - download. Plus there are places like Lovefilm where you can pay a minimal fee each month and just rent as many games and movies as you like.

Everything's going digital, I'm not surprised. I was shocked to find out that the one near me was actually still open recently, I thought they closed down years ago... probably won't be open for much longer though.
