Default Egyptian could spend 5 years in prison for his atheistic views + Petition

Quote:
Abdel Aziz Mohamed Albaz was arrested recently in Kuwait on charges of blasphemy. Whether you are an Atheist or a Muslim or a Christian, nobody deserves to be jailed or punished for having atheistic views. He did not hurt anybody. He did not steal, he did not assault anyone, he did not vandalize someone's property. He is simply a well articulated Egyptian Atheist who speaks his mind. He expressed himself in writing peacefuly a rather gentle articles. We need your help to pressure the Kuwaiti government to release him from this unjust imprisonment.

They still didn't get me though so thats always a plus,Yes I can be sent to jail for simply being an atheist who speaks against islam or christianity thats how fucked up the middle east is.

This isn't a thread for religious talk,I just made this thread so people can sign this petition because there's still hope for people like me in Kuwait,If the Kuwaiti government were to send all atheist Arabs who talk against religion in prison trust me they'd be sending ALLOT of Arabs in prison.

Also no this isn't the first time something like this happend,Alber Saber "google him" an Egyptian atheist was arrested too for the same reason just a few months ago only he was in Egypt which is even more fucked up considering the Egyptian president is a member of the muslim brotherhood.

really though? i find this interesting. I hold quite a passionate view in my religion and chose that of my own accord, not because it was passed down to me and family made me uphold their religion.

Really? You find it interesting that people go to prison/tortured. Simply because they don't believe in something that could be completely made up. It's pretty much every day news now

Abdel Aziz Mohamed Albaz is quite famous in the muslim world. He is the owner of the http://www.benbaz.info/ blog.

I find stupid that this guy continued to write his blog, while staying in Kuwait. It looks like he seeks martyrdoom or celebrity. He is basically one suicidal attention seeker.

The problem is that the Kuwaiti law is clear, he can declare repentance :
Quote:
If the offender declares repentance, they will receive jail terms of no more than five years or pay a fine that does not exceed 10,000 dinars ($36,000).
Luckily there is no death penality for blasphemy in Kuwait yet. The parliament voted to add one death penality amendment in 2012, but it was later rejected by the Emir. His decision was later cancelled by two-third of the parliament last month ...

The bill will only effective after the government accepts it, the Emir signs it and it is published in the official gazette within one month (end of january). So there is currently no death penality.

In my personal opinion, this arrest is simply the result of the growing conflict between the parliament ruled by Islamists and the Emir who is still quite secular (in comparision to his neighbours). The Islamists probably jailed Ben Baz to pressure the Emir in order to make him sign the law.

You must know that most people jailed due to this law got suspended sentences or were simply acquitted. I can see any real risks for him.

You have also to think about the conflict between Shia and Sunni in the Emirate and about the current neighbourhood to understand the situation. Look also at the Egypt-Kuwait relations which are quite bad.

I'm curious if the citizens in these countries generally support these blasphemy laws. Anyone who's lived over there have any insight?

its not really a law as much as it is a religious one

if you renounce islam, it becomes legal to kill you. in theory atleast

nobody follows it ofcourse, but still. makes you think

Depends on country and even within countries region ,generally speaking cities with better education and infrasructure are more broad minded compared to smaller backward areas.Ofcourse we can never generalize 100% but you find more people with similar attitudes depending on where you go. I am not from Egypt but am from another Islamic country where i am from there are wild fluctuations in opinions from region to region. As to answer you question you'l find both, people who support and those who are against it.

Even in Germany and many other Eurpean countries you can go to jail for opening your mouth,in Europe if you say 5,999,999 people died in the holocaust instead of accepted 6,000,000 figure you are prosecuted. That is just as fucked up as Blasphemy laws in some islamic countries.
