Default More than half of seniors now use the Web

http://www.cnn.com/2012/06/07/tech/m...x.html?npt=NP1

According to new research from the Pew Internet and American Life Project, for the first time more than half (53%) of Americans age 65 or older now use the Internet or e-mail.

Also, most Internet-using seniors have made a daily habit of going online; Pew noted that 70% of them access the Internet on a typical day.

E-mail is especially popular with Internet-using seniors. Nearly half of them use e-mail on a typical day. But social networking sites, which are accessed via the Web or apps, are far less popular: Just 34% of seniors use these at all, and only 18% on a typical day.

Probably the younger end of the age spectrum, who are just becoming elderly, but used computers when they had to work.

Not surprising. That number is just going to continue to increase. That still seems like such a low number. I can't even imagine things without a computer. I use it for everything basically and that isn't going to be changing when I get out of school.

I think the majority of the older folks I know spend more time online than I do. Having done a bit of internet troubleshooting for a few ladies – most over 70 - who lived in the same building as me at the time, I can say all of them used sites like Facebook ten times more often then social media hating me ever would. They were forever uploading and downloading photos and YouTube junk and goofy photoshops. Most of them even shopped from sites eBay and kijiji, which I almost never do.

They have all that free time and I guess modern old ladies don't do much knitting. One of those that I helped get her network running asked me to list specs for her that she could show a computer shop. She wanted a gaming pc to play The Sims on.

Someone - I suspect my sister - taught my mother how to Facebook. She keeps friend requesting me.
